“One issue that always boggles my mind is that the idea that a gun is a defensive weapon, that is a myth. A gun is not a defensive weapon. A gun is an offensive weapon used to intimidate and show power. Police officers don’t carry a gun as a defensive weapon to defend themselves or their other officers

Time was up until the 70’s all a cop needed to do was flash a badge (star) and that was it. When the courts with their lib lienient sentencing changed this. The gun became is the intimidator and many in law enforcement view it that way. That’s where this guy is comming from .

So, cops carry guns to dish out justice?

They do in California.

So Chief, let me get this straight. If the criminals are shooting at your policemen, they don’t use their guns to defend themselves from the bad guys, as well as, shooting at them to kill? A gun can be both a defensive and an offensive weapon, depending on who is brandishing it and what their situation is. For Americans who own guns for defending themselves, their family and their home, it wouldn’t be much of a defensive weapon if it didn’t also have the offensive fire power to stop or kill the bad guys they were trying to protect themselves from, now would it?

What a moron. The Peter Principle kicked in for this guy when he rose to his level of incompetency.

The opening line from an article posted just a few entries above this one:

“An Egyptian security official said Saturday that the interior ministry has agreed to purchase 100,000 new 9mm pistols after low-ranking policemen went on strike demanding greater firepower to defend themselves against increased lawlessness.”

I guess those Egyptian coppers forgot the check with the solons in Emeryville before they gave some thought as to how they were going to protect themselves in their own hellholes.

“A gun is an offensive weapon used to intimidate and show power,” he asserted,...

That's why cops have guns, right, Chief?

This guy is an idiot. A gun in NOTHING MORE THAN A TOOL!
Got it? How one uses that tool determines if it is used for either offense or defence. It’s the person using that tool that make the determination. Yepper, his statement was indeed outrageous.

Time for a new police chief in Emeryville.

"Isn’t that the post office guy from Cheers?"

Nope. John Ratzenberger, who played Cliff Claven on Cheers, is a real life conservative.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was a FReeper.

I’m unclear on the concept here Chief. You and your officers wear guns. And you do this for what reason?

He said why: to "intimidate and show power."

To Tupelo.

Sorry I ruffled your feathers. Perhaps you misunderstood my intent. If so, I apologize.

You could clean it up a bit though.

I guess you learn something new every day. Just an opinion though, but if the Chief was starting out new, and he went to an oral board and told them that he didn’t consider a pistol as a defensive weapon, but that it was to be used to intimidate and show power, he wouldn’t be hired. Police Chiefs and Sheriff’s would understand the liability to their departments in civil suits if they had officers making public statements like that.

"The gun became is the intimidator and many in law enforcement view it that way. That’s where this guy is comming from."

"We deal with gun violence on a daily basis and we are just asking and have been asking for reasonable regulations, not that will impact the legal gun owner but to help keep our officers and communities safe."

He made his statements in the context of regulatory control of firearms, which don't impact the legal gun owners. Regulations impact legal gun owners, they don't impact criminals. When life and death are a matter of seconds, regulations meant to keep our officers and communities safe are useless, and the police are only minutes away.

In the News/Activism forum, on a thread titled Emeryville Chief of Police makes outrageous statement (video included), Enterprise wrote:

Yep, and he swallowed the line that’s being driven Obama and his Demo-Coms through their instuments of propaganda to the point of disregarding training many local jurisdictions have in place in for firearm permits and use which have sucessfully reduced incidents...
But the real reason (beside general insurrection) Demo-Coms are pushing this is because of their conception of eglatarianism. How can they take guns away from those who own and use them illegally ? When there are those that have and use them legally ? That’s the way they think..There’s a snowball chance in hell that they will ever isolate and do a house to house search in areas where crime through the use of “guns” is rampant. But their mind to do that nobody can have a gun. And theyif given half a chance would size them ...those thinking otherwise are fools.

Dealing with your 2nd half
“When life and death are a matter of seconds, regulations meant to keep our officers and communities safe are useless, and the police are only minutes away. What do you expect. This guy lives in Limbaugh’s Riolinda there’s too many in law enforcement that think that way.
