Children who are allowed to watch too much TV could be at higher risk of developing antisocial and even criminal behaviour in later life, researchers have claimed.
New Zealand researchers even found those who had watched a lot of TV as children were more likely to have a criminal conviction in later life.
The University of Otago study followed a group of around 1,000 children born in the New Zealand city of Dunedin in 1972-73.
Every two years between the ages of 5 and 15, they were asked how much television they watched.
Those who watched more television were more likely to have a criminal conviction and were also more likely to have antisocial personality traits in adulthood.
Associate Professor Bob Hancox of the University of Otago says he and colleague Lindsay Robertson found that the risk of having a criminal conviction by early adulthood increased by about 30% with every hour that children spent watching TV on an average weeknight.

Unwed mothers, no daddy at home, drugs, abuse physical and mental not a factor, TV is............ the blame is off of the liberals and thier programs of societal decay TV is the culprit! praise the lord!
As usual, the a$$hole$ always get it backwards. TV viewing does not cause the criminal behavior. The factors that lead to criminal behavior also lead to increased hours before the idiot box.
No fathers. Abusive mothers. Anti-social attitudes in the house. Just plain stupidity.
Television isn’t liberal?
I would think the social ills you mention are obvious enough. However average parents, minus the drugs and abuse and all that (which is not in my home, but TV is), would do well to consider this data.
As usual, the a$$hole$ always get it backwards.Criminal and antisocial behavior. As seen from people emotionally attached to television.
I was a latchkey kid only child with a tv in my room(unusual for the mid 80s but it was a yard sale black and white). Anyway, watched a ton of tv. suso far so good. Please forgive horrid grammar and punctuation . stupid phone.
Spot on and correct. The TV is a symptom, not the cause, but that’s typical liberal thinking.
The Nat. Assoc. of Realtors is running an ad stating that home ownership helps kids do better in school. Talk about abuse of statistics, but the NAR are pros at lying with numbers.
Criminals choose to be criminals....The only influence they need is two more just like them. Being a criminal is now an occupation....drugs, robberies, pimping. It is more dominant among certain demographics.
Children who watch Teleprompters are more likely to get a criminal conviction in later life
I wonder how they explain criminal activity before TV or movies.
Well then, they’ll be coming for me at any moment (and I do intend to use the Gilligan’s Island defense...)
TV the new baby sitter.
I watched far more than my fair share of TV while growing up. While I’m not a criminal, I am very much anti-social.
However, I don’t think watching television had anything to do with it...I just simply don’t like most people.
One of the smartest things I ever did was keep my kids away from TV until about age 10.
We lived in a semi-rural area, and I refused to buy cable.
The wife whined a lot, but I adamantly stood my ground.
Instead, we had relatives record cartoons and send kiddie movies, e.g., Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which eventually I memorized all the dialogue to.
My kids had tree houses, rope swings, dogs, cats, a pony, a vegetable garden, and plenty of room to roam. My son could hit a gopher at 30 yards with a pellet rifle (open sights) by age 7. We hunted pigeons and depradating doves, which we ate (pigeon and dumplings). They played outdoors as long as there was daylight.
I was also careful about inviting other kids over to visit. If they were not good or did something unsafe, I would not invite them over again. My kids had some very good friends.
They became Scouts. I took them fishing, camping, hunting, and backpacking.
They were protected from the filth and corruption of TV until they started visiting friends at their homes.
My kids turned out AWESOME! I was surprised that they are often more conservative than the Old Man.
Young FReepers, follow my wisdom. NO regular TV! Control your kids’ environment.
I watched history shows, history movies, science shows, music shows, and show that made you think. I still watch television the same way. My wife tells me that we have color now and and we won WWII.
