When my mother was alive and living alone, I was concerned for her safety. So I went and bought her a side-by-side derringer chambered for .410 (or .45 ACP, can’t remember teh make), which I loaded up with .410 buckshot for her. It was a nasty little close-quarters weapon that I wouldn’t want to face. It was the best of both worlds...

Back in the 1950s to about 1970, there was a tiny liquor store in a seedy part of Houston owned and run by a Korean War vet, a jarhead at that.

He had two double barrel 12 gauges wired under the counter with a paper poster stapled across the opening to hide them. Pulling a string fired all four barrels at once.

He cut a number of would-be robbers in half with that rig. Each time he had to clean up the mess and repair the front door.

One day someone ambushed him as he left his store with the bank bag.

But think of the good he did while plying his trade!

// Pretty cool, but in close quarters it is hard to wield a sword. I suggest a handgun, or a shotgun.//

...especially since now it may seem to perps that the clerk has issued a throw down.

I have one of those. Bond Arms in Granbury, TX.

The thing is a work of art and is great in close quarters. The only thing I don't like is the 12 lb. trigger pull, but that does force you to grip the thing, which is a good idea.

Yup, a 3-hole pattern from down to up. Just like coal buttons on a snowman...

I don't disagree about the gun idea... But swords are surprisingly effective in close quarters. They fill up space that an attacker can't occupy anymore. They let the defender thrust and still maintain some distance. Ideal for close quarters is something like the guy in the store had which looks like a navy cutlass. Developed for tight spaces on ships, it is a bit shorter with a stout heavy blade.

Good one Ramius; yep, a short sword/cutlass can be very effective in a situation like this. I recall seeing Indian/Pakistani short swords being sold some years back, very reasonably priced. Even a machete gives a nice long blade and provides some distance between the hunting knife wielding miscreant.
