Laura Bush Demands She Be Removed From Pro-Gay Marriage Ad
Christian Post ^ | 02/21/2013 | Katherine Weber

Posted on 02/21/2013 3:27:10 PM PST by SeekAndFind

U.S. former first lady Laura Bush has requested that her spot be removed from a pro-gay marriage advertisement that launched this week. The ad is part of a $1 million print and broadcast media campaign by the Respect for Marriage Coalition.

"Mrs. Bush did not approve of her inclusion in this advertisement nor is she associated in any way with the group that made the ad," Anne MacDonald, a spokeswoman for the former first lady, told The Dallas Morning News Thursday morning.

"When she became aware of the advertisement Tuesday night, we requested that the group remove her from it," MacDonald added.

The commercial features a 2010 clip from the former first lady speaking on her support for gay marriage. She tells CNN's Larry King: "When couples are committed to each other and love each other that they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has."

Bush's support for gay marriage came as a surprise to much of the U.S. public, as her husband, former U.S. president George W. Bush, has openly voiced his opposition to gay marriage. He endorsed a 2004 constitutional amendment which would restrict marriage to two people of the opposite sex.

Laura Bush even wrote in her book, Spoken From the Heart, that during the 2004 presidential election, she asked her husband not to make gay marriage a central issue in his campaign platform, as they held opposing views on the issue.

The commercial also features previous clips from U.S. President Barack Obama, former vice president Dick Cheney, and former secretary of state Colin Powell, all speaking on their support of gay marriage.

President Obama's clip is taken from his inaugural address earlier this year in January, in which he said: "Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law."

According to the Respect for Marriage Coalition, this new commercial will reportedly hit various Sunday talk shows on Feb. 24. It is expected to also run as full-page print advertisements in major national newspapers, including The New York Times, and online advertisements will appear in the upcoming days.

Currently, there are two gay marriage cases facing the Supreme Court: California's Proposition 8 gay marriage ban, and the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

It was announced today that the Obama administration is considering intervening in the Supreme Court's Proposition 8 case in an attempt to urge the court to overturn the state's ban on gay marriage.

She should have kept her pie hole shut about it if she didn’t want to be dragged out as an advocate for perversion.

I’ve lost any respect I once had for this woman.

How do you feel about Cheney?

He’s in the ad willingly, all gung ho, because of his gay daughter who keeps having kids by sperm donors, to be raised by her and her “partner”.

I respect Cheney for the good things about him. I deplore what he has become on this issue.

The same is how I feel about LB. She is a child of the 1960s, that is, she came of age in that era. She lives a conventional lifestyle but she was indelibly imprinted with the idea that we have to accept a lot of stuff in other people that we wouldn’t choose for ourselves.

In addition to that, she was born and raised a Democrat. A Texas Democrat, to be sure, which isn’t like a NY one, but that doesn’t help her see things the right way. We had a few lib Dems in Texas such as Sissy Farenthold and Ma Richards and Molly Ivins (Gag on all three)...

the Respect for Marriage Coalition.

That's like calling Satan the Guardian of Holiness. When speaking to a liberal (if you're ever forced to) always hear the OPPOSITE of what he says. So "Respect for Marriage" means "Total Disregard for the Institution of Marriage."

How do you feel about Cheney?

Cheney is a turncoat. Of course, he was mum on the issue while VP, but suspect he was secretly pro-sodomy during that time. The Republican Party platform was decidedly more pro-marriage only a few years ago, and that platform carried the day without the Cheney's or Laura Bush's meddling.

At the risk of offending a lot of lady FReepers here, I'll say that Laura's position doesn't surprise me, as she's a woman - and women are MUCH more likely to be soft on this issue. That is the reality, and polls bear that out. That is why, in most high level politic positions, women in general are not suitable to govern. They are carried away by emotional issues that have no place in the hard decision-making, based on principle, that is often required at high levels.

So far today I’ve read news stories about a boy who wants to wear a dress to prom, a college that sponsored sex lessons in a chapel, and a woman who had sex with a dog.

People that think our nation’s problems are only about taxes and spending...sigh.

“Regardless of her opinion, she has every right to ask that she be removed from the ad campaign.”

Of course she has the right to ask to be removed from the ad, but she has little if any power to force the advertiser to remove her from the campaign.

It would have been a lot better if she had not spoken out in favor of gay marriage.

So if I posted that George H. W. Bush should not have pardoned Casper Weinberger, or that Noelle Bush should have gone to jail for her drug offenses, or that George W. Bush should not have nominated Harriet Miers to SCOTUS, it would not constitute thread hijacking?

Jeb Bush has *nothing* to do with the subject of this thread, not even tangentially so.

Jeb Bush? How did Jeb get drawn into this or is this an attempted thread hijacking?

Let's see. Jeb Bush is the brother-in-law of the last Bush First Lady "Laura" and now it's Jeb's "turn" to run for President and he don't want Laura's support of anti-Christian agenda to steal away the latino vote both legal and illegal.

Making sense is not a synonym for "hijacking".

I suspect that if Jeb Bush had already had his turn as President, this pro-homo marriage ad would be of no concern to Laura publically.

Her sudden opposition is nothing but a political move and we know her husband cannot run again.

Has EVERYTHING to do with Jeb Bush. EVERYTHING

Only if you're one of those headline readers.

Laura Bush even wrote in her book, Spoken From the Heart, that during the 2004 presidential election, she asked her husband not to make gay marriage a central issue in his campaign platform, as they held opposing views on the issue. Laura Bush is doing this out of politics.

There are sufficient responses in this thread, validating why Jeb Bush IS a fair topic, for the straw arguments to cease and desist.

“At the risk of offending a lot of lady FReepers here, I’ll say that Laura’s position doesn’t surprise me, as she’s a woman - and women are MUCH more likely to be soft on this issue.”

Indeed. I’m facebook friends with a conservative Christian and his wife who attend a Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. One day, his wife decided to post that she supports “same-sex ‘marriage’”. I didn’t unfriend her but I have hidden her from my newsfeed and have not talked with them since she did that. I think she is totally emotion based and irrational about this. I don’t believe she learned this opinion from her husband or her church.

“That is the reality, and polls bear that out. That is why, in most high level politic positions, women in general are not suitable to govern. They are carried away by emotional issues that have no place in the hard decision-making, based on principle, that is often required at high levels.”

As much as I love Margaret Thatcher, I tend to agree with you on this. Here’s Ayn Rand on that subject-
