North Korean fashion, women are 'encouraged' to choose from 18 officially sanctioned hairstyles
UK Daily Mail ^ | February 21, 2013 | Tara Brady

You won't see a North Korean woman sporting the Jennifer Aniston style blow-dry.

That is because women are being encouraged to do their bit for the world's most conformist state - by getting a specially approved haircut.

The bizarre campaign exhorts women to choose from one of 18 officially sanctioned hairstyles chosen by communist officials eager to clamp down on western influences.

And judging by this display on the wall of a salon in the capital of Pyongyang, there are not many styles to choose from.

With traditional Korean dress, women generally wear a straight style but with western clothes they can choose something more wavy or loosely permed.

You can also tell the difference between married and unmarried women just by the style of their hair do.

Married women tend to be frowned upon if they are not sporting a shorter mop but those who are unmarried are allowed to be a bit more playful with their choice of style - opting for plaits, braids or even a ribbon.

Unfortunately, the strict guidelines also apply for men.

Back in 2005, North Korean state TV launched a five part series entitled 'Let us trim our hair in accordance with Socialist lifestyle' with the aim of promoting short back and sides for its male population.

At the same time, a number of reports appeared in North Korean press and radio urging tidy hairstyles and appropriate clothing.

The TV show sent out teams with hidden cameras to catch 'rebel' North Koreans who were breaking the North Korean strict hairstyle code.

The makers of the program went so far as to name and shame those who had the audacity to get their hair cut differently.

Full title: In true North Korean fashion, women are 'encouraged' to choose from 18 officially sanctioned hairstyles (and men only get ten!)

The program even claimed there were health reasons not to grow long hair including the bizarre claim that long hair would rob the brain of energy.

LOL! These people have long since past crazy.

Check out the picture at the link for the 18 approved women's hairstyles and the men's hairstyles. I know they really want to avoid "western influence", but would it really be so bad to have something that doesn't look so dated? I suppose if I had to choose, I'd go with #2. Thank God I don't have to. Communism is a miserable system, but I'm sure the libs will say that's not "real" communism, and dictatorial things like this wouldn't happen if they gifted us with a worker's "paradise" here.

Meh. I don't like any of 'em.

This.

This is my idea of the perfect North Korea haircut. Suitable for men and women.

Coming to your obamahaircare stylist in the future.

Having too long hair is unhealthy for you. And since we control your healthcare you’ll cut it the way we want. Piss us off and we’ll force you to get a “Moe”.

The revolution will be lead by a woman with hairstyle #19.

This is the type of news article Mayor Bloomberg hides under his mattress to "read" in secret.

That’s quite a few more than are allowed in this country. In the USA, if it’s not championed on TMZ, women are not allowed to have it.

My taste in Far East Music is normally just the Japanese Groups (Hatsune Miku being a prime example =^.^=)

But Girls Generation is pretty good to, My Sister discovered them right when she came out of High School a few years ago, you can't go over to her house without find a poster or CD lying around.

I listen to a ton of KPop. I usually check the Korean Billboard and a couple fan made charts weekly to see what new good stuff has come out. The only JPop songs I really hear are the ones that are sung by the Korean groups who cross over for a wider appeal. I recently looked at a JPop chart and thought some of the songs sounded good, though.

That's because most of the really good looking ones are with wealthy men instead of working at a restaurant. They wont waste their time unless it's a 5-star place where they can meet wealthy men. Those places pay more and specifically hire attractive staff.

I meet some spectacular looking girls around NYC and I'd say Koreans are without a doubt the hottest Asian women. Every Asian male I know agrees.

Lols!

You and I are like exact opposites when it comes to this.

I normally stick with the JPop and listen to Korean Songs when they cross over to the Japanese side!

Like I said though Girls Generation are pretty good and I remember when the song Let's Get Together Now first came out and it was a collaboration of the band Chemistry, Sowelu, Lena Park and Brown Eyes. And you know what? Both the Japanese and Korean version of the Song are pretty damn good!

homely?? Oh Yi-na begs to differ.

She had the funniest facial expressions I have seen in a long time, too bad she had minor part on a not so good cable show, and her part seemed to be reduced near the end (probably because she was too interesting)
