Living the good life off of government benefits ($82,000 for a family of 3 in PA)

It’s not hard to see why. For this story, CBS 21 researched what government programs are available to a single mother of two making $19,000 a year. What we found was incredible.

Our family would be eligible for $14,976 in free day care, another $13,400 for Head Start and Early Head Start, $7,148 in housing vouchers, $6,500 for weatherization projects, $400 to pay heating bills, $480 a year for a cell phone, with an extra $230 for a land line, and $182 in free legal advice.

The family would get more than $6,028 in food assistance and another $6,045 in medical assistance. The mother is eligible for $5,500 in Pell Grants for school with an additional $12,000 for the Education Opportunity Grant; SMART Grant; and TEACH Grant.

Our family would also get $6,800 in tax credits, and $1,900 in withholding would be returned.

Add it up and this family can get $81,589 in free assistance.

I just picked up 21 pills at the pharmacy. This is a chemotherapy drug. The cost for these pills was $13,000. Yes, I didn’t mistype it. Thirteen THOUSAND dollars for 21 pills.
That’s not what I paid but that is what I was told that they cost.
:(

It worked.

It bought Baraq an election while compiling the worst imaginable economic record a POTUS could have.

The Fedgov is just like that family in 2007 riding a wave of false prosperity based on maxxed out credit cards and helocs on a home with negative equity.

Instead of two leased luxury SUVs and a McMansion, they have entitlements.

Single Mom family values ping!

This past weekend and even before Melissa Harris Perry says its unfair that so many married Moms get to stay home with their kids but single Mom's are expected to work.

This really ticks me off! I’m a poor widow, struggling to make it month to month, hoping to get a job and these scumbags get it all! More than 1/2 my social security goes for medical expenses, so between that and living expenses, there’s nothing left for any frills. I started working a real job at 16 and worked all my life, even when I could have gotten on disability. WHY? So my taxes could go to pay for all these parasites and illegal aliens and their anchor babies?

We just had a big march in Boston -- a lot of young people are unemployed, and they are pretty upset about it. They want the government to do something. Their primary suggestion seems to be: raise taxes, spend money, give government jobs to lots of unemployed young people.

And that, my friends, is how you grow the economy and increase wealth in the Age of Obama.

Yep...but let's remember...they aren't the only ones making out bigtime off these goodies. The foodstore chains (foodstamps), cellular companies (R/C/B/O phones), etc. are loving these handouts too since they end up with the money. The middle class taxpayers are the ones (most of us) who are getting the "shaft".

The real “wealth redistribution” going on in our country today is not between the rich and the poor...it’s between the working class and those who (due to their lack of a work ethic) SHOULD be poor.

It’s getting to the point that working for a living is simply a choice. If you want to work - great! - if not - no big deal.

I know a lot of people who are putting in fewer hours because they know that any OT would simply be taxed to pay for the leeches. The country loses in so many ways by these policies.

Getting a handout SHOULD come with stigmas....however, almost all stigmas have been erased in getting these freebies. We as a country need a sense of shame again.....I am not sure if we will ever get that back. And to me, that is scary.

Well stated!

I completely agree with your observation of today’s new “norm”: Work and get taxed to death or not work to receive hand-outs from the ‘govment (just remember to vote “D” in elections is the only stipulation...

Wow, $31,900 of that goes straight into the schools. No wonder schools love welfare. Much as I hate welfare, that wasn’t $81,600 to the welfare queens. That was $49,700 to the welfare queen and $31,900 to the schools.

The schools are making out as well as the welfare queens are taking more than a third of the cream right off the top. So 65% is direct to the welfare queen and 35% goes to the schools.

I should have been a school administrator instead of an engineer.

The welfare state has an entire system of support as in people needed to run it.

If there are no "clients" the support staff can't get paid.

I am also officially poor ($8k/yr) and a widow.

With only Social Security income, I do not have to pay income tax. And with such low income I get a property tax rebate too.

Call your local representative and ask if your state offers any tax rebates for seniors and those with low income.

If you have property, think about putting it in a trust or conveying it to your heirs.

We can all do something to deprive the govt of tax revenue, without even breaking law to do it. Considering what they do with that revenue, I would say it is one’s moral duty to turn off the faucet.

Love it when an MSM actually investigates welfare fraud. i I wish there was more of this, with hidden cameras and listening devices. With I were Attorney General.

I’m in PA and no expert but I would be leery of these figures.

You do get lots of bennies for having babies, no question about that. However...

First of all, what you DON’T have to pay, such as tax, shouldn’t be counted as a handout paid out of the pocket of the person who does have to pay.

You get ONE free phone, not both land line and cell. And the phone company requires regular (yearly) confirmation of eligibility. It’s all cross-checked too, so Social Security, state or county welfare offices, etc., all know what you get and from where.

Weatherization, last I heard, only happens to a given house once in 14 years. If they gave you even one window in 2000, you can’t ask them for anything else until 2014.

The LIHEAP (heat assistance) figure is actually understated. They provide an initial $400 (this year), and then if you run out — which you will because that’s only half a tank of oil — they send another $400, and yet another after that. I believe that is all they offer in a single year.

As for “$1900 in withholding” — withholding what? If you are working, every dollar is counted and lowers your eligibility for free loot. Tax credit of $6k+ — for what? Free legal advice — depends on the problem. Legal aid usually just says, sorry, we don’t handle THAT.

Me, I live on $8k a year, and get no handouts. I have even paid property tax out of it without whining, though I won’t be doing that any longer. If a family of three is getting ten times what I live on, I don’t think they’re getting any bargains, stifling their kids’ minds with public ed, govt cheese for the noodle. But I don’t blame them near as firmly as I blame the productive taxpayer who makes it possible.

You don’t like injustice? You don’t like the way the government is destroying America? Stop sending them the means to do so.

Ah, but that would entail some adjustments in your life style. Some sacrifices. Even some...hardships.

The people who built this nation put up their very lives for it. They put down their pens and plows, kissed their families goodbye and marched proudly into fire.

We can all do something before it comes to that.
