Lauren Silberman scheduled to be first woman participant at NFL regional scouting combine
Yahoo Sports ^ | Feb 20, 2013 | Kevin Kaduk

If we're being completely honest, Lauren Silberman's odds of making a NFL team as its kicker are pretty much nonexistent.

However, the long-shot nature of her bid isn't stopping the 28-year-old New Yorker from becoming the first woman in history to register for an NFL regional scouting combine, which features players who weren't invited to the main combine currently being held in Indianapolis. Silberman will compete alongside college kickers in New Jersey on March 2 and 3 for the right to advance to a Dallas super-regional combine in April...

If she can kick, what’s the big deal? If a female 6-4 275-lb linebacker came along who could run the 40 in four-flat don’t you think NFL teams would line up to draft her?

Problem is, when something goes wrong on a field goal, kickers often have to do more than kick. Miss Silberman is no heavyweight.

Compared to the rest of the players around them, kickers rarely are. Their best bet is to generally just try to be a speed bump to slow down the other player (or force him to change direction), while covering up the best they can.

Punters need to be a little tougher, IMO.

As long as she wears a bikini while playing I'm good with it. Actually, I think this is a publicity stunt for both her and the NFL.

If she had been a big deal in college and was 22 I might think was not a publicity stunt.

If Holly Mangold(sister of NY Jet O-Lineman NIck Mangold) didn't make it, then I'm not sure we will ever see it, other than a kicker. She is an olympic weightlifter, and played football in High school. She didn't play in college as she focused on her pursuit for the Olympics.

Here is a little blurb about her

I turned it off after she started pimping her company that “helps” athletes get better by playing video games.

If a female 6-4 275-lb linebacker came along who could run the 40 in four-flat..

Well, as the old cliche' goes, if my aunt had balls, she woulda' been my uncle. Of all the freakish, physical attributes that exist in an NFL male athlete, transcribing those to a female would be evidence of massive chemical enhancement or genetic mutation. And the game of professional football would slide into oblivion.

My son was playing linebacker against one of our rivals and knocked down a wide receiver on an interception. He went to help him up and it was a girl.

He later played against a girl who was an offensive lineman.

She’s not trying to be a football player, she’s trying to be a kicker.

She’s not trying to be a football player,..

Fair enough. My comment was really directed at the notion of a 6'4", 275lb. woman linebacker.

On the other hand, a woman kicker who can best all the men in the tryouts might be equally absurd. Would the NFL allow her the chance to overstep more qualified men so as to appear politically correct? Absolutely.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the Obama loving PC liberal NFL mandated each team to have a female player. I’ve said for a while that it won’t be long before a sack will be recorded when a defender removes the pink ribbon from the qb’s skirt.

I am so sick of the Rooney Rule - it should be abolished. If there is a mandate that a representative percentage of head coaches to be interviewed must be a certain race, then shouldn’t the entire team make up follow the same guidelines?

Last season NFL kickers were listed as 177 lbs and up. For a female to have a realistic shot at making a team she’d have to be in (or at least close to) the existing weight range.

Watch the video at the link. She can’t kick. Definitely a publicity stunt.

If this were a Disney movie, they would be getting married in the next five years.

I asked if he apologized to her and he said “No dad. It’s football”.
