A year later, Trayvon Martin case murkier than ever
Chicago Tribune ^ | 22 Feb 2013 | Eric Zorn

The simple story — cops yawn when burly white vigilante stalks and kills unarmed African-American child for the "crime" of walking while black — shocked the conscience of much of the nation a year ago and touched off an explosion of indignant demagoguery.

Trayvon Martin, 17, was walking through a Sanford, Fla., subdivision early on the evening of Feb. 26, 2012, headed from a convenience store to the home where he was staying with his father. Off-duty neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, 28, was driving to the grocery store when he saw Martin and called police to report that an unfamiliar teen was behaving suspiciously.

Zimmerman got out of his car and, nearly six minutes later, roughly 200 feet away, shot and killed Martin at close range with one bullet to the chest.

On one side were those who believed the story illustrated the evils of racism and firearms as well as the deference law enforcement affords white people.

On the other side were those who believed that Zimmerman, whose mother is Hispanic, acted in self defense, and that his arrest a month and a half after the incident in the face of mounting public pressure illustrated the perils of mob rule.

This article is barely worthy of comment. What a piece of crap.

He wasn’t walking home. He was casing the neighborhood for another robbery. Zimmerman was right to be suspicious.

You’re absolutely right, Skeeter. This article is indeed a piece of crap as is the lying, stinking media that attempted to try Zimmerman for this non-crime. The criminal is dead! There should have been no case against him for defending himself against an out-of-control bullying African.

Barky was right about one thing, however. Tray-Von could have been his son.

Off-duty neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman

What does that even mean? The implication (I think) if that Zimmerman had no business watching out for trouble because he was "off-duty" from his neighborhood watch effort. What crap.

I'm guessing this writer was one of those who was screaming for blood after the incident and has taken a closer look at the evidence.

He still gives the Justice for Travon side too much credibility - my understanding is everything that Zimmerman claims has checked out.

I believe that the early reportage and commentary on the case was inflammatory and irresponsible — particularly, I should say, from my friends on the political left, who seemed to want to turn Martin into Emmett Till by suggesting that Zimmerman was about to get away with having hunted him down like a dog. On the right, advocates for Zimmerman made unsparing efforts to portray Martin as little more than a thug who got what he asked for.

A Chicago newsrag allowing both sides of the Crime of the Century to be considered? Wonders never cease!

No, he wasn’t. Go back and read some of his earlier columns on the case.

Eric Zorn is a reliably left-leaning weenie of an editorialist with his head so far up his anal orifice that he probably can’t remember when he last saw genuine sunlight.

Years back when I would occasionally pay real money to check out the Trib sports page I could pretty much be sure that if I scoped out Zorn’s column it would leave me nauseous - and he never disappointed.

The article is basically, “crap,ok ok, we were wrong but...ummm, ugghhhh, Zimmerman might have lied about one small detail so lets try him anyway.”

The case is not murky at all. The more we know, the more clear it is that it was criminal to arrest Zimmerman and press charges.

The public knows too much. This will not end as badly for the prosecution as the Duke case, but it will end in that spirit.

But rather than preparing to seethe, interested observers ought to take the time to read "Intermediate Range," a 254-page paperback in which first-time author Michael Knox, a former detective with the Jacksonville (Fla.) sheriff's office meticulously details all the known evidence in the case.

Knox, 40, now a private forensic consultant specializing in crime-scene reconstruction, is careful not to take sides as he leads readers moment by moment through that fateful evening. Using police recordings, statements to investigators by witnesses (including several by Zimmerman ) and results of lab tests, Knox shows what we know and, critically, what we don't know, about what led up to what everyone agrees was a senseless loss of life.

Anyone read this book?

If he is that badly deformed, he is in need of a navelvisualoptomy....replacement of the navel with glass for those whose head is so far up there they need the procedure to see where they are going.

I think he really means “a strategy for convicting Zimmerman is murkier than ever.”

So now Jewish-descended, Hispanic Zimmerman is “WHITE”. I wonder if the CHICAGO newspaper ever focuses on the race of the murderers in its home city.
