An estimated 47 percent of Detroit’s property owners pay no taxes, according to recent report from The Detroit News.

n fact, according to The News, delinquency in the shattered city is so bad that that 77 blocks had only one owner who paid taxes in 2012.

Yes, one person paid taxes in an area covering 77 blocks.

Many of the people interviewed by The News said that they don’t understand why they should pay into a system that has failed to provide them with basic public services.

“Why pay taxes?” asked Fred Phillips, who owes more than $2,600 on his home. “Why should I send them taxes when they aren’t supplying services? It

>Why aren’t the Republicans mentioning Detroit every day?

Very good question. Between the GOP dimbulbs that forced Romney on us and allowed legitimate rape morons to trash the party we are hosed.

It will only get worse until the GOP quits allowing halfwits like akin and the opposite rino rats ruin elections.

They need to start garnishing the wages of those not paying their property taxes, and they should start with all government employees since those names will be the easiest to cross check against the tax rolls.

I’m surprised that they haven’t started a discussion of a tri-county (suburban) income tax to supplement public services in Detroit....

Interesting how that 47% FREELOADING percentage keeps coming up, over and over again.

Why does the Governor have to save Detroit? He isn’t doing anyone any good. Some people have to learn the hard way. That’s just their learning style. You can lecture and lecture the people of Detroit, but they won’t listen. They evidently have to learn the hard way. My mother in law is a nice person. She keeps putting out the “fires” my step daughter starts because of her poor decisions. I gave up being a fire fighter for her. The problem with people who keep starting “fires” in their lives is that those fires can burn up some other people. The fire starters don’t care. They don’t like the pain from being burned, though. That’s how they learn. The people of Detroit have to get a few burns and maybe they’ll wise up. The Governor needs to stay away.

Yes, it is manifestly clear that Akin caused Detroit’s problems.

Detroit drags the state down so its in our best interest for Detroit to come back. Fortunately the usual Detroit wrecking crew won’t get a blank check and real results are expected.

-—— Now cities like Detroit and Chicago are paying the price.——

The problem is obsolescence. Detroit especially and Chicago less so are just plain obsolete. The reason for their being may exist but the reason for their growth no longer exists.

America lost its’ War on Poverty and War on Drugs. Now cities like Detroit and Chicago are paying the price.

More precisely: cities like Detroit and Chicago are paying the price for America having even waged the inherently unwinnable War on Poverty and War on Drugs - which fostered dependency (WoP), and hyperinflated drug profits and channeled those profits into criminal hands (WoD).

“Enablers”.....that’s the word I was looking for. What are the OPPORTUNITY COSTS of saving Detroit? Every dollar that goes to Detroit is a dollar that could be spent somewhere else. Are things so good in Michigan that they can burn money there? At the risk of being called a racist, and because I can’t think of another good story right now to use as an example, what if Detroit is just a “Tar Baby” for the Republican Governor? What if the Democrats are just laughing looking at him wrestle with something useless?

The things that are being done in Detroit are good for Michigan as the primary goal. The good done for Detroit is purely secondary.

The simple fact is that Detroit is an ideal business location and no matter how much of a mess the city is, the location is ideal. Its the second busiest freight crossing on the continent and nothing will change that.

Republican control means republican control of the money which means results rather than waste. Its already attracting business.

Apparently when you asked where the republicans are, you just want some bashing. Well good luck with all that.

I don't claim to be a Detroiter, I do know the city very well. It's absolutely ruins. Ruins unlike the scale ever seen in the history of humanity. To call the City of Detroit dis-functional is a vast understatement. It is dieing proof of where we are heading as a country. Visible proof of how our country is in it's 80th or 90th straight quarters of manufacturing/industrial decline. These industries are the source of all wealth in America. Our country's future is grim.

It was meant to cover the general GOP failure to defeat democrat scum. Detroit is the result of the GOP losing to democrat filth.

100% of Detroit freeloaders at public housing don’t pay taxes either. So why should others?

In the war of Left verses right these cities are the first ones that the left claimed victory.

I apologize if I bashed you. I didn’t mean to. There are so many things wrong with Detroit. When I look at OPPORTUNITY COSTS and THE LAW OF DIMINISHING RETURNS, I just don’t see good things ahead for Detroit. I hope that the Republicans can save Detroit, and receive the credit for it, but I don’t think that will happen.

Soon, Chicago will look just like Detroit. Who would want to own property in Detroit if the value depletes to the point it isn’t worth owning?

“In other words, a $4,000 tax bill on a $35,000 property is insane and unjust. I wouldn’t pay it either.”

Yeah, for all those who trash California, thanks to Proposition 13, we pay something like $6,000 on a home worth $1,5 million and we get all the services for which we pay! Someone in Detroit should start asking the City Council where all the money goes ( probably into their pockets )! Property taxes should be used to pay for only those things that are directly related to the property itself. If that were policy, the value of the home would not be the major factor in determining the actual tax to be paid. And get the schools off of the property tax,
