Lawmakers in at least half a dozen states, including California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania, have proposed legislation this year that would require gun owners to buy liability insurance much as car owners are required to buy auto insurance. Doing so would give a financial incentive for safe behavior, they hope, as people with less dangerous weapons or safety locks could qualify for lower rates.
I believe that if we get the private sector and insurance companies involved in gun safety, we can help prevent a number of gun tragedies every year, said David P. Linsky, a Democratic state representative in Massachusetts who wants to require gun owners to buy insurance. He believes it will encourage more responsible behavior and therefore reduce accidental shootings. Insurance companies are very good at evaluating risk factors and setting their premiums appropriately, he added.
Groups representing gun owners oppose efforts to make insurance mandatory, arguing that law-abiding people should not be forced to buy insurance to exercise their constitutional right to bear arms. But some groups, including the National Rifle Association, endorse voluntary liability policies for their members. And as several states pass laws making it easier for people to carry concealed weapons and use them for self-defense, some gun groups are now selling policies to cover some of the legal costs stemming from self-defense shootings.

driving is a priveledge, owning a gun in a right.
You can’t tax guns, anymore than you can take speech, it’s unconstitutional.
As with ALL things democRAT, no facts, just feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelings.
I see a good business opportunity the rats are handing the NRA.
I meant “tax speech”
grr..... if only FR would add an edit feature.
No matter how hard you try, you can’t fix stupid!!
A list of who owns what firearms in insurance company records will be soon in government hands.
Something really radical is planned that requires disarming the majority of the population.
obama promised to “transform’ the U.S.; I think Zimbabwe is his model.
“You cant tax guns, anymore than you can tax speech, its unconstitutional.”
Constitution? What is this constitution you speak of? Obama, the Obama media and the Democrats find the constitution to be fatally flawed, and simply an impediment to “progress”. And fortunately for them, the GOP is filled with bed wetters who would rather cower than to oppose the Obama cabal’s illegal activities.
Democrats will do as they wish.
I think if you are a democrat you should pay for liability insurance for that reason alone. Having such political allegiance results in great damage to yourself and to the community at large. I am sure that this can be proven statistically if I had the time to do so.
Most of my items are third party buys or trades. Good luck on proving I have any.
No mention that this would be defacto registration.
Do they suppose nobody will notice?
Americans already have to spend too much of their income on insurance and you think more is good?
Look at all the activities that can no longer be enjoyed due to liability because of feal lawyers.
And how are people unable to meet obamacare mandates going to afford gun insurance ?
This is aimed solely at discouraging firearms ownership, and should be stopped.
Let’s tax homosexuals...they COST more than most in the medical system
So how are they going to make crooks buy “firearm insurance,” eh?
And, if they won’t buy, what is the point?
I never said it was good.
Just saying that the NRA could take lemons and make lemonade. (sort of like they do with theft insurance on firearms when you become a member.)
Yes I’m sure that all the violent ghetto thugs will run out and purchase a policy before they rob the next 7/11. :-)
Drawing parallels with owning guns and owning cars is just stupid. Drivers will be mighty upset at all the new laws, regulations, and fees they would now have to deal with.
This could be very costly to folks who have a large number of guns that were not lost in boating accidents. This could be really bad for me.
