Former Utah governor and presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman is speaking out in favor of marriage equality, arguing that it is a conservative cause that the Republican Party should support. In an op-ed for The American Conservative, Huntsman writes about his time as governor of Utah during which he pushed for civil unions and equality for the LGBTQ community, and adds that the GOP now has the opportunity to do more.
Conservatives should start to lead again and push their states to join the nine others that allow all their citizens to marry, Huntsman writes...
Huntsmans pro-marriage equality stance is not only a symbolic step forward for conservatives, but for Mormons as well. Over the last several years we have been seeing more and more Mormons from across the political spectrum come out in support of marriage equality, said Spencer W. Clark, executive director of Mormons for Marriage Equality, in a recent statement. I am thrilled that Gov. Huntsman has taken this stand and hope that it will prompt other Mormons to join us in building stronger families by ensuring that same-sex couples and their children have access to the same protection and benefits under the law that my family has.

Hence, "and" is represented by "&" ... also the word "the" is excerpted by elipses...
From the article: Conservatives should start to lead again and push their states to join the nine others that allow all their citizens to marry, Huntsman writes.
Does that include group marriage (5 guys & 3 women?)? Polygamy? Polyandry (marrying others' spouses while retaining dual or multiple marriages). Is Huntsman, a Mormon, re-opening up the polygamy debate?

Forward?
Since it's the "road to polygamy and polyandry," sounds regressive (as in 19th century) to me!
So MSNBC has declared Huntsman a conservative.
I am not sure many conservatives would agree; not many on this site anyway.
Ahhhhhh.....the Mormons......trying to figure out why their guy didn’t get elected. OK. Start having the homosexuals marry in the temple.
That whacky The Onion’s got nothin’ on PMSNBC!
He is NOT a conservative. Anyone who suggests he is has no idea what it means to be conservative.
Jon Huntsman, if nominated, will not get my vote. Period.
Jon Huntsman wouldn't recognize a conservative if he bumped his head on one.
I'm not qualified to say whether or not he is a genuine Mormon, or just one for political purposes.
Jon Huntsman, a conservative ....
These morons a PMSNBC think that anyone to the right of Jane Fonda is a conservative.
But if Huntsman was a true conservative they would have labeled him a right wing extremist. Using the plain term conservative means Huntsman sits somewhere between Jane Fonda and Richard Lugar politically.
Huntsman is just the latest poster boy to push the liberal agenda.
“Conservative?”
Oh, please... Jon Huntsman is many things (mostly bad), but a “conservative?”
Is “the closet” getting too crowded?
Another “conservative” getting ready to “come out”?
idiots.
And PMSNBC for a source ?
I must admit it's salacious & derogatory enough for your standard anti-Mormon spew, but perhaps a lesser-known "source" would serve your aims better.
Get back in the closet Jonny Boy.
Huntsman is a Democrat Party mole.
Pimping for 2016, but his Daughter is still HOT!
Wrong. Same sex marriage is the Left’s ticket to persecuting and neutering the message and mission of what is left of the church.
He is on the board of Caterpillar and helped them loose a lot of money in a stupid investment in China. His expert advice sure helped the a lot..lost $500 or there abouts.
I’m SHOCKED! SHOCKED, I SAY!
I first saw that little wimp in the primary races last year and was NOT DEFINITELY IMPRESSED with is feminine demeanor.
I told everyone in the room that that SOB was a queer. The more I saw him, the more I was absolutely certain.
Now, he proves to the whole world that he is a stealth queer.
Nah you missed the point. They don’t mind if Gentile homos marry. They just don’t want them to marry in their Temple.
Why Mormonism will Surrender to Homosexuality
What is marriage? If it is a legal contract for the purposes of hospital visitation, wills, etc. then go for it. If it is still a man and woman becoming one and all that that entails, then no.
Huntsman is NOT a conservative, he has never been one.
Bill Ayers, a conservative, says that..
Saying it doesn't make it so.
Then maybe we can legalize marriage between man and dog and woman and cat and horse and.....
presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman is speaking out in favor of marriage equality
Which is why this homo lover didn't stand a chance. No normal person would even consider voting for this creep.
Huntsman is a “conservative” like Obama is a champion skeet shooter, Biden is a home defense expert and Helen Thomas is a beauty queen.
Yep. Which is why so many people were turned off by him. Ewwwww!
(Oboma tried to hide his for awhile. I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of obomas feminine side now that he can'r run again.)
Colofornian ... so what’s your point? That all Mormons are not in lock step with thier church teachings? Are your church’s members?
Why is this news?t
I swear you have the ability to turn a story a dog crossing a road in Utah into LDS Smear inuendo.
Your almost as good as Obama at this smear/inuendo stuff

Get government out of the marriage business completely and leave it to the churches. The government can concentrate on defining civil unions or whatever other pseudonym they wish to apply to it.
FIFY.
Fixed it.

All citizens in the United States are already “allowed” to marry. /s
That bird has flown most likely, the state is never giving up the institution at this point, for two simple reasons. One, it provides massive control of the culture. Two, the statists, leftists, and homosexualists need a way to punish those who will never buy into whatever impossibility the state decides to call marriage at the time, and they don’t have a way to do that without the state involved.
Pope Leo XIII warned about the danger of the state’s involvement 130 years ago.
Freegards
Same sex marriage makes our culture more deadly for our posterity, it unnecessarily increases costs for absolutely no good reason, and, given heterosexual fertility, it deprives children of their right to be raised by their father and their mother.
(Why don't you take the time to ask MSNBC -- and the dozens of OTHER media outlets who will be picking up this story?)
Perhaps it hasn't something to do, Teppe, with the reality that we know of only ONE GoP presidential candidate who has now advocated for the overhaul of one-man, one-woman marriage...and that's Jon Huntsman, a Mormon.
Oh...hold it...allow me to refine that a bit...Huntsman might be the FIRST GoP candidate to attack one-man, one-woman marriage, but he is the SECOND Mormon to attack one-man, one-woman marriage...'cause in 1844...Joseph Smith the polygamist was a self-proclaimed candidate for POTUS!
#1...IF EVERY relationship can be deemed a "marriage" -- then NOTHING is "marriage."
What? Siblings can marry, Vig? Pets? Group marriage? Why let "govt" restrict the # of partners, Vig? Govt shouldn't set any standards for age restrictions? Any child can "marry" oh libertarian one? And a harem? Polygamy now brought back, eh Vig?
#2...As long as a govt proposed huge safety nets for broken families [this week a PA paper researched a mom of two who earned $19,000 a year and determined she has access to about $82,000 of govt funding each year in terms of cash, staples & services]...then govt has an obligation to reinforce healthy families.
If govt would 100% stop footing the bill for broken families, then at least this secondary argument wouldn't apply. But it does apply precisely because of how we taxpayers foot MOST of the bill for experimental relationships.
In whose mind is that assclown a conservative? There is a reason he bailed out of the Republican primary contest. For God’s sake, he served Obama...no one in their right mind thinks Jon Huntsman is a conservative. No one.
Jon Huntsman is o conservative. Didn’t he also support illegal aliens?
I've been thinking of marrying my car, if my wife doesn't object. We could use the deduction.
In Jon Huntsman, Jr.’s case, you need to strike out the second “m” in “Mormon” to correct the title.
I'll swear right along with you. Undoubtedly he'd (?) find some obscure source quoting Joseph Smith from 1845 that the dog was polygamous as well.
YAML
I am beginning to think you are right.
I saw that in my home town of Fargo, ND Country Club “conservative Republicans wanted government spending for their benefit; the taxpayers be darned.

Speaking of wacky...
"Now the way he translated was he put the urim and thummim into his hat and Darkned his Eyes than he would take a sentance and it would apper in Brite Roman Letters. Then he would tell the writer and he would write it. Then that would go away the next sentance would Come and so on. But if it was not Spelt rite it would not go away till it was rite, so we see it was marvelous. Thus was the hol [whole] translated."---Joseph Knight's journal.
"In writing for your father I frequently wrote day after day, often sitting at the table close by him, he sitting with his face buried in his hat, with the stone in it, and dictating hour after hour with nothing between us."
(History of the RLDS Church, 8 vols.(Independence, Missouri: Herald House,1951),"Last Testimony of Sister Emma [Smith Bidamon]," 3:356.
"I, as well as all of my father's family, Smith's wife, Oliver Cowdery and Martin Harris, were present during the translation. . . . He [Joseph Smith] did not use the plates in translation."
---(David Whitmer,as published in the "Kansas City Journal," June 5, 1881,and reprinted in the RLDS "Journal of History", vol. 8, (1910), pp. 299-300.
In an 1885 interview, Zenas H. Gurley, then the editor of the RLDS Saints Herald, asked Whitmer if Joseph had used his "Peep stone" to do the translation. Whitmer replied:
"... he used a stone called a "Seers stone," the "Interpreters" having been taken away from him because of transgression. The "Interpreters" were taken from Joseph after he allowed Martin Harris to carry away the 116 pages of Ms [manuscript] of the Book of Mormon as a punishment, but he was allowed to go on and translate by use of a "Seers stone" which he had, and which he placed in a hat into which he buried his face, stating to me and others that the original character appeared upon parchment and under it the translation in English."
"Martin Harris related an incident that occurred during the time that he wrote that portion of the translation of the Book of Mormon which he was favored to write direct from the mouth of the Prophet Joseph Smith. He said that the Prophet possessed a seer stone, by which he was enabled to translate as well as from the Urim and Thummim, and for convenience he then used the seer stone, Martin explained the translation as follows: By aid of the seer stone, sentences would appear and were read by the Prophet and written by Martin and when finished he would say 'Written,' and if correctly written that sentence would disappear and another appear in its place, but if not written correctly it remained until corrected, so that the translation was just as it was engraven on the plates, precisely in the language then used."
(Edward Stevenson, "One of the Three Witnesses,"reprinted from Deseret News, 30 Nov. 1881in Millennial Star, 44 (6 Feb. 1882): 86-87.)
In 1879, Michael Morse, Emma Smith's brother-in-law, stated:"When Joseph was translating the Book of Mormon [I] had occasion more than once to go into his immediate presence, and saw him engaged at his work of translation. The mode of procedure consisted in Joseph's placing the Seer Stone in the crown of a hat, then putting his face into the hat, so as to entirely cover his face, resting his elbows upon his knees, and then dictating word after word, while the scribes Emma, John Whitmer, O. Cowdery, or some other wrote it down."
(W.W. Blair interview with Michael Morse,Saints Herald, vol. 26, no. 12June 15, 1879, pp. 190-91.)
Joseph Smith's brother William also testified to the "face in the hat" version:"The manner in which this was done was by looking into the Urim and Thummim, which was placed in a hat to exclude the light, (the plates lying near by covered up), and reading off the translation, which appeared in the stone by the power of God"("A New Witness for Christ in America,"Francis W. Kirkham, 2:417.)
"The manner in which he pretended to read and interpret was the same manner as when he looked for the money-diggers, with the stone in his hat, while the book of plates were at the same time hid in the woods."---Isaac Hale (Emma Smith's father's) affidavit, 1834.
