S.E. Cupp and the Freezing of the Conservative Mind
America Spectator ^ | 2-21-13 | Jeffery Lord

Posted on 02/22/2013 12:02:52 PM PST by Mozilla

One reads S.E. Cupp on Rush Limbaugh and the late Lee Atwater and has to wonder.

One reads her compatriot young conservative friends in the New York Times and has to wonder.

Do these conservatives even listen to themselves?

Are they really conservatives — or just the latest, newest incarnation of that age old 20th century invention: the GOP moderate? The newest sparkling edition of a wannabe Ruling Class? Making the rounds of the bar scene in Manhattan and New York and longing to be hip?

Or are we witnessing something else? Something simpler yet more troubling?

A lack of historical awareness of conservatism. Are we seeing young conservatives who seem not to have grasped conservatism whole? Who do not understand the seamless thread that binds conservative values as a way of life, from the Constitution to gay marriage and abortion to free market economics and dealing with Al Qaeda?

Young conservatives who have a lack of perspective of both conservatism’s intellectual foundation and in this case the ferocious politics that swirl constantly around its most prominent champions? With apologies to the late Allan Bloom and his 1987 bestseller (The Closing of the American Mind: How Higher Education Has Failed Democracy and Impoverished the Souls of Today’s Students), are we witnessing a freezing of the conservative mind? (Note: Ex-Bush aide Pete Wehner has conjured the freezing metaphor in a slightly different way over at Commentary.)

First, let’s deal with the Rush business.

As mentioned earlier this week, the New York Times Magazine cover story on a group of young GOP techies and commentators — of which Ms. Cupp is a leading member — was discussed in this space.

Long well thought out rebuttal from Jeffery Lord on S.E. Cupp's slam of Rush Limbaugh recently in the New York Magazine and the subsequent follow up in the New York Daily News where miss thang doubles down on her anti-conservative rhetoric against Limbaugh.

Born and raised in California and relocated to MA.....definitely not a conservative. A GOP-Elite maybe because the field of competitors for good looking commentators of that genre is limited, but not a conservative.

Sure, a bit may be lack of perspective. After all, they do not teach conservatism in school, so young conservative converts are often picking it up as they go along, maybe from a few books, the internet, or ironically, Rush Limbaugh himself.

Don’t underestimate the “hip” factor that he mentions though. A lot of urban and suburban young “conservatives” just don’t want to deal with being ostracized from their peers if they buck the gay marriage trend. You can usually defuse any arguments about economics, foreign policy, and even other social issues with liberals, but fag brigade is inconsolable if you don’t toe the line.

Sadly these young conservatives were either in diapers or not yet born when Reagan was President and certainly are two generations removed from such conservative thinkers as W.F Buckley. There simply have not been any real conservative leaders in the GOP since Reagan. Sarah Palin came close, but was pilloried by both liberals as well as the RINO leadership of the GOP. The Republicans have now three times kowtowed to the "moderates" and nominated Dole, McCane and Romney all leading to disasters in the elections. The only bright spot was 2010 when the TEA party showed the establishment that the people will back conservatives.

If this country is to survive, the GOP must forget trying to please the moderate voters. Romney carried these voters, but was still overwhelmed by the "low information" voters. Going back to its conservative roots is the only way the Republican party will survive as a force in American politics.

You know, I am almost 10 years younger than S.E. Cupp and I could not give a Ch!t about what Hip Urban Crowd says about me.

I am more inclusive and tolerant than they could ever be. You will never find a Bigger Racist than my stupid "Progressive" Cousins right out of High School.

Absolutely no one is above criticism or questioning, but it would sure as Hell Help S.E. Cupp's case if she Gave Us Specifics on what Rush has said that needs to be stood up too!

Otherwise she is simply pandering the Republican Moderate.

How about they go Moderate the party that needs it.

S.E. is a Smart gal and could go places, but her airheadedness is starting to get the better of her and maybe a smack down from Maja Rushie is in order to deflate her ego.

Maybe its just me but I’ve never been big on women who feel the need to wear men’s dress clothes.

I’m also big on women who have solid critical thinking skills and Cupp appears to fall a bit short here.

I listen to Real News on the BlazeTV every day, where Cupp is a regular commentator, and while I used to like her a lot, lately when I listen to her, it seems she really likes the sound of her own voice, more than anything. She’s kind of high on herself, IMO.

I could not have said it better myself RJ.

You are 100% right on the Money. I was Born in June of '88 at the right end of Reagan's presidency and it's sad that they America of '88 is no longer here, we are weaker and more divided than ever before.

Progressivism has infected both parties, that is why the GOP-E hates Sarah Palin so much.

I was 20 years old when I voted for Sarah in '08 and the GOP-E who hate her today can go kiss my ass.

They have moderated the GOP into a Coma and attack anyone who try's to shake them out of it.

If the GOP wanted to survive they would circle the wagons around Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann instead of being the first to attack them when they call out their liberal friends.

I saw ‘C’ Cup on a talk show a while back and thought she was barking moonbat liberal. It just oozed out of her every pore.

I'm rather shocked to hear that anyone would think she is conservative. She doesn't even reach RINO on that scale.

A conservative atheist is much like a battleship without a rudder. As formidable as it may appear to be up close, the reality - as illustated with the battleship Bismark - is that even a battleship is doomed if it cannot navigate.

A conservative atheist rejects the source of their conservative values and, in doing so, has cast away their moral and foundational rudder. Then, just like the Bismark, they are doomed to perish.

Myself, if I stand with God then who can stand against me?

“The left didn’t want to debate these people — they wanted to demonize them and then destroy them.”

I think that is the key point these moderates, squishy congress critters, and young talking heads don’t get. The lefties are playing for keeps. There is no negotiation or compromise with them that doesn’t ultimately destroy freedom. Its time to change direction before we plunge off the cliff into economic chaos and a failed police state.

Its like like with islamic terrorism - how do you compromise with someone that wants you dead? Kill me next week instead of this one?

Very well put. I was watching Stossel and I listen to what these young “libertarians” have to say and for the most part, if pot is legalized, most of them would just go away.. As a herd, they are a one-trick pony.
There are a few that actually make sense and I think leadership needs to take a turn towards true libertarianism but they (as a group) will always be about making themselves feel better and democrats know this. Legalize dope and most will return to their leftist roots, as long as they can keep getting the righteous weed.

that unless the GOP gave up conservatism and became a me-too moderate party with socially liberal candidates

That means to give up principles and to become pragmatists. But a principle is not a luxury. It is the essence of man's way of dealing with the future consequences of his actions, of knowing what they are, and thereby not leaving his long-range goals to chance. Principled action is action based on man's means of coping with reality, which are conceptual means, and conceptual understanding of how to achieve his end.
