National park cuts could hit state hard
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | February 22, 2013 | Peter Fimrite

Posted on 02/23/2013 5:07:02 PM PST by artichokegrower

Park rangers in the Bay Area and throughout California would be laid off, interpretive programs would be cut and Yosemite's bears might end up with a perpetual trash banquet if the federal government does not find a deficit-reduction plan, according to a National Park Service document leaked this week.

The lack of a long-term financial plan would mean a $1.2 trillion across-the-board cut in federal spending and a 5 percent hit to the budgets of the 398 national parks, including Yosemite National Park, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Point Reyes National Seashore.

The cuts would be necessary in the event of what is known as the "sequester," which is a legal writ forcing cuts in federal programs in the event President Obama cannot reach an agreement with Congress on a budget plan by Friday.

Cut parks, cut air traffic controllers, cut FBI. Wonder where possibly they might cut first before hitting these programs?

USDA partnering with Mexico to boost food stamp participation

The Mexican government has been working with the United States Department of Agriculture to increase participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or Food Stamps.

USDA has an agreement with Mexico to promote American food assistance programs, including food stamps, among Mexican Americans, Mexican nationals and migrant communities in America.

“USDA and the government of Mexico have entered into a partnership to help educate eligible Mexican nationals living in the United States about available nutrition assistance,” the USDA explains in a brief paragraph on their “Reaching Low-Income Hispanics With Nutrition Assistance” web page. “Mexico will help disseminate this information through its embassy and network of approximately 50 consular offices.”

The partnership — which was signed by former USDA Secretary Ann M. Veneman and Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Luis Ernesto Derbez Bautista in 2004 — sees to it that the Mexican Embassy and Mexican consulates in America provide USDA nutrition assistance program information to Mexican Americans, Mexican nationals working in America and migrant communities in America. The information is specifically focused on eligibility criteria and access.

I’m sure there is absolutely nothing else other than services that people actually use that can be cut. Crickey, just fire half of the managers, and they will still be top heavy.

When Klinton shut down the government everyone except “essential personnel” got sent home for an extra 5 days of vacation. I had to work and they promised to make it up to me but they didn't. Those that did the least got an extra week of uncharged vacation and full pay. They did not want to mess with the unions. The FAA functioned as usual.

Park rangers in the Bay Area and throughout California would be laid off

I knew that Leftists would soon end up paying for their wastefulness

at a public off road park that was taken over by the state...the “Rangers” are liberals..and the funds taken in are spent buying them new jeeps and buildings...nothing is spent on improving the park or Buying more land...

these democrat scum will soon be loosing their jobs as the State implodes.

Perhaps this is a reflection of the “real world” out in the private sector. I have been laid off twice and am always worried about more layoffs.

I have also seen my wages and benefits drop dramatically. Why should I continue to sacrifice while the people who work for me live a better life than me?

Sorry. Maybe this is unfair. I don't wish this on anyone but there seems to be a disparity — the taxpayer versus the people who make their living off of the taxpayers.

We can certainly start with the more frivolous and unnecessary jobs in the public sector.

What do you figure is the ratio of “essential personnel” to “non-essential personnel” in the federal workforce?

Seems to me that we should just tell all the “non-essentials” that the furlough is permanent and they’re getting two weeks severance pay.

Screw the unions.

Why are all of these horrible things going to happen when the sequester goes into effect since the sequester is only a cut in the INCREASE? There are no ACTUAL cuts happening - that is, no one will have a smaller budget. In fact, as I understand it there will actually be MORE money in the budget this year than last - just not as much as they were counting on. So why would even ONE PERSON be furloughed? Can someone explain that to me?

It didn’t take but a few sentences for the author to expose his irrational panic.

If the parks are closed, then there will be no trash in the bins for the bears to feast. The poor bears may actually have to forage in the woods!

Blah, blah, blah government scare-mongering. I’m so tired of it.

* Our school board warns of serious and deep cuts in education if they don’t get their tax hikes. They were turned down and they still managed to balance the budget and not lay anybody off.
* Our town warns of serious and deep cuts in “services” if they don’t get the utility tax extended.
* Our county warns of serious and deep cuts in “services” if they don’t get their sales tax hikes. When I moved here, it was 3%; now it’s almost 10% — over 3X MORE. Yet they are never satisfied and want more, and more.
* The State of CA always warns about serious and deep cuts in prison guards and state parks if we don’t give them more tax money. We have about the highest state taxes in the nation and they want MORE, MORE, MORE.
* The Feds warn about huge cuts in “services” if they get a lousy 1% cut in revenue. Kids on the streets, grandma out in the cold eating dog food, etc.

Leftists all sing from a songbook with a single tune in it.

I am so disgusted by this lying scare- and fear-mongering I want to scream. It is childish and immature beyond belief. This nation elects the biggest bunch of immature losers from top to bottom. They are not fit to govern.

The Parks will be there when the Rangers go back to work. I really can’t remember the Rangers outcry when 75,000 coal miners were fired. Saddle up boys its time to join the recession the government has nurtured and grown. Perhaps you could have voted to end this nightmare called Obamaunism.

Yes. Funny how when we in the private sector get laid off...or my commissions cut on half no one cares..but if it happens to a government employee it’s the end of the world.

Found this:

” More than 800,000 “non-essential” federal workers — out of a civilian workforce of 2.1 million — would be furloughed until new spending legislation was passed.”

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-04-07/government-shutdown-threatens-800-000-as-obama-seeks-solution.html

So roughly 40% of the federal civilian workforce is “non-essential”. What a scam.

You’re correct. I was working in DC at the time. People were begging to go on the furlough list. They got to take a week off, with pay, without it counting against their vacation leave. There were so many shoppers at the giant Pentagon City Mall that there were cars parked along the exit ramp from the expressway. It was a complete and total farce.
