Park rangers in the Bay Area and throughout California would be laid off, interpretive programs would be cut and Yosemite's bears might end up with a perpetual trash banquet if the federal government does not find a deficit-reduction plan, according to a National Park Service document leaked this week.
The lack of a long-term financial plan would mean a $1.2 trillion across-the-board cut in federal spending and a 5 percent hit to the budgets of the 398 national parks, including Yosemite National Park, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Point Reyes National Seashore.
The cuts would be necessary in the event of what is known as the "sequester," which is a legal writ forcing cuts in federal programs in the event President Obama cannot reach an agreement with Congress on a budget plan by Friday.

Sorry to hear that. It is a frightening world for sure especially in the USA (at least the last 4 years). I really wish we had some serious people in Washington who wanted to do something about cuts. The “Real World” has many more job opportunities than the government because there are more jobs in the civilian sector. However, I digressed. I would love for their to be a complete look at EVERY program in the government and seriously look at what is not working. It won’t happen though.
There are no ACTUAL cuts happening - that is, no one will have a smaller budget.
Just ask those getting screwed out of 20 percent of their pay for the rest of the year. Most make an average of 1300 dollars a paycheck. I only bring in 1096 so I would love to see all these rich evil government worker paychecks that are so high. I seriously don’t see them at the Naval Academy.
Raise admission fees the necessary amount.
But what gets cut is the president's decision.
Just ask those of us getting “screwed” out of FIFTY+ PERCENT of our blankety-blank paycheck each and every period in order to pay for the blankety-blank federal monkey—make that GORILLA—on our backs!
Where does it stop? How the hell much do you want us to pay??
I pay the same 50 percent taxes...as does every other WORKING person. Your in good shape making six figures and still have six figures left over. Wish I had that.
Well, keep on wishing.
Maybe one of these days the people you work for will take it all.
Don’t forget...the mountains will flatten and the geysers will cool if DC lefties stop writing rubber checks.
“I understand it there will actually be MORE — (BORROWED) — money in the budget this year than last . . ..”
A slight modification.
“Just ask those getting screwed out of 20 percent of their pay for the rest of the year. Most make an average of 1300 dollars a paycheck. I only bring in 1096 so I would love to see all these rich evil government worker paychecks that are so high. I seriously dont see them at the Naval Academy.”
How are they getting screwed out of something they never had?
They will make the same as they did last year.

And even if this were true - WHERE’S the FURLOUGH?

HOW are you getting 20% less? There is no REDUCTION in the budget!?
“Raise admission fees the necessary amount”
No.
Cut the waste first.
I look back on the bizarre metamorphosis of Charles Johnson, former conservative fave after 9/11, and I see a lot of current FReepers.
Johnson, of Little Green Footballs, wasn’t really conservative, he just had the crap scared out of him to the point of becoming a defense hawk, for a few years at least.
Current FReepers who are poor-talking their own rates of compensation and benefits from the Federal Government, as well as attacking other FReepers who dare to point out that FedGov employees just might be overpaid and underworked, aren’t really conservative, either.
They’re here because they’re pro-military, and they’re pro-military merely because that’s where their bread is buttered. Start talking budget constrains upon their particular teat and they screech to high heaven, trot out tales of woe, even suddenly turning into caricature Bible-thumpers condemning everyone to heck. Seriously.
So, just suck it up, idiots and yahoos out in private-sector-land, it’s soooo unfair to be furloughed and experience a temporary 20% reduction in pay. Why, they’re *only* taking home $1,300.00 per paycheck on average, what a bargain. Oh, wait, that’s per week take home pay, lol.
Still a bargain at any price, you’re hearing it straight from the horses’ mouths. You’ll burn in hayull for sinnin’ agin’em. They’re entitled. /s
Olson said the public should be prepared for closures of campgrounds, hiking trails, visitor centers and other service reductions at “national parks, historic sites, monuments and memorials, parkways, trails, preserves and reserves, seashores and lakeshores, recreation areas and national battlefields.”....OK. I’m prepared. Bring it on.

Your remarks are so right on the money.....great responses!!!
I have lost a career in the medical research field (pending Obamacare has utterly destroyed any preclinical research) I say we should just shut down any government position that is considered "nonessential" in a snowstorm
let bureaucrats get the jobs Americans won't do.
Government programs are like an amoeba — they expand and fill the void. No boundaries? It becomes huge and out of control. Certainly, people are employed. But at what cost? And it is the fox watching the hen house.
Sorry to hear that.
I’d like to think that what doesn’t kill us will make us stronger. The free market mantra. And that works for the most part. But how can the public sector ever become efficient if they are never tested in this way. Or private crony companies like GM are never forced to reorganize?
They continue to grow without restraint. True, people are employed and employing folks is a good thing. But at what cost?
Clinton got pizza delivered by Monica and the rest is history!
