Long Island Teen Dies Of Mysterious Illness During Disneyland School Trip

ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — A 15-year-old boy from Long Island died of a mysterious illness while on a school trip to Disneyland.

Joseph Tutaj was one of 80 students from Seaford High School’s marching band who traveled to the Southland to perform at the Anaheim theme park last week.

“The first day at Disneyland he was okay. He went on Space Mountain and everything with us. Then the second day he wasn’t feeling well at all,” said band member, Michael Nicola.

On Tuesday, Tutaj was at the Santa Monica Pier when he complained of a high fever.

The teen was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and died 24 hours later.

Doctors told the boy’s family they believe Tutaj may have contracted a debilitating infection.

Tutaj’s parents said the 15-year-old trumpet player had no history of medical problems.

The LA County Coroner’s Office said the cause of death has been deferred pending further tests.

The boy’s passing is the latest in a string of tragedies to hit the Tutaj family.

His father, Robert, is currently battling stage four cancer, and the family’s home was destroyed in Superstorm Sandy.

Why do parents allow public schools to run off with their children to other states?

My daughter went from Indiana to Disney World Orlando on exactly the same kind of trip and had a great time.

That was a safer trip than her drive to school each day in my view. One day she got clobbered by a tri-ax dump truck, thankfully the pickup truck she was driving had a lot of compressable length.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

“The teen was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and died 24 hours later.”

Nancy Pelosi will be on Meet the Press on Sunday morning and will blame the teen’s death on Ronald Reagan.

When my daughter was in high school she went to Disney World with the band. They were invited to play there. It was a great experience and she had a great time. And no, taxes didn’t pay for the trip, the kids and the parents (us) did.

How do you think the fact this kid was on a school sponsored trip figures into him getting ill?

Prayers for Joseph Tutaj and his family.

My kids have often gone on school trips like this. This was just some very bad luck, from what is known so far.

Maybe because some of us more responsible parents (two of which was a pharmacist and an EMT) go with them as chaperons. We also had a pharmacist and EMT among the chaperons. We had one student get some sort of rash at Disney so ran him over to the clinic inside the park and called his parents. He got medical attention much quicker than he would have if he’d been at school. He was fine. As nascarnation said, most times they are safer on trips than at school.

People do get sick and die every day no matter where they are. On day one, there was a woman who died outside Spaceship Earth as we were in line. Sad. Not anyone from our group.

Sending kids to another state is nothing compared to foreign exchange students who are sent half way around the world. I’d never let my kids in the program but we had an exchange student one year. In that group that came over, one of them was killed in a car accident. Very scary and beyond tragic.

I’m not into conspiracy theories, but this just seems weird. Wasn’t there a story out of LI last week about a 6 y.o girl who died under mysterious circumstances?

What do perverts or pedophiles have to do with this story?

I can’t even imagine the sorrow his mother and father must be going through. Lord, give them strength and let them know You’ll hold each one of them close and help them be able to bear it until they meet again.

My son was a 15-year-old trumpet player when he and his older sister went to Disney World at the end of school last year. After losing our first daughter to stillbirth we always say, “I love you” when we say good-bye, never knowing whether we’ll see each other again. Saying good-bye to my kids and watching that plane take off was tough.

For this family they probably thought this trip would be a little spot of joy in the middle of everything else. Gosh, I hurt for them.

Where was it that there was supposed to be antibiotic-resistant TB?

Where was it that there was supposed to be antibiotic-resistant TB?

LA, skid row, that's maybe 30 miles and an entire world away from Disneyland.

This wasn't any flavor of TB; TB would take years, not days.
