US report shows increase in sexually-transmitted infections (20 million new infections each year)

Washington D.C., Feb 23, 2013 / 04:12 pm (CNA).- New governmental reports on sexual behavior in America show significant rises in both sexually-transmitted infections and use of emergency contraception in recent years.

Government estimates “show that there are about 20 million new infections in the United States each year,” said that Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in a new fact sheet released this month.

The report was one of two recent studies by the organization surveying the behavior of sexually active individuals in the U.S.

Based on surveys and public disease reports, the group estimated “that there are more than 19.7 million new STIs in the United States each year.”

Young people “shoulder a substantial burden of these infections,” it continued, estimating that “half of all new STIs in the country occur among young men and women.”

The number of new infections each year “is roughly equal among young women and young men,” it added.

The second study noted that about one in 10 women between the ages of 15 and 44 has used “emergency contraception.” This marks more than a 250 percent increase in the use of such drugs in the last decade and more than a 1000 percent increase since 1995.

So-called emergency contraceptives were approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1998 for use in the United States. These drugs – taken after sexual intercourse – can have a contraceptive effect by preventing ovulation or an abortive effect by preventing an already-conceived human embryo from implanting on the uterus wall.

Nearly 60 percent of women who had used emergency contraception reported doing so only once, while 17 percent reported using it “three or more times.”

Nearly equal percentages of women reported using emergency contraception “because of fear of method failure and because of unprotected sex.”

Use was most prevalent among young women aged 20-24, with about one in four reporting use of such drugs.

This discrepancy was expected for several reasons, the Centers for Disease Control said.

The method was not approved during the “early reproductive years” of older women, and younger women are less likely to be married. In addition, “the use of sterilization as a contraceptive method increases with age, consequently decreasing the potential demand for emergency contraception.”

In its report on sexually-transmitted infections, the governmental organization promoted “correctly using condoms” as a mode of infection reduction alongside abstinence and “reducing the number of sexual partners.”

“The high incidence and overall prevalence of STIs in the general population suggests that many Americans are at substantial risk of exposure to STIs, underscoring the need for STI prevention,” the group said.

This piece seems to be a hodgepodge of poor writing and misinformation.

The original thought is an increase in sexual transmitted diseases. Then there is a shift in mid thought to emergency contraceptives. Such drugs prevent pregnancy, not disease.

The author seems confused in thinking an emergency contraception like a condom, prevents disease.

"Now hold on guys, I only slept with half that many.
You can't blame me."

It's a shame there isn't some easy, reliable method of preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. If we just knew how these diseases were transmitted, we could avoid those situations and solve the problem. Maybe researchers will find the answers - some day, if we stop the sequester and give them more funding.

Dang. You beat me to it except I didn’t have the photo and was just going to remind mz. fluke that birth control pills don’t prevent std’s nearly as well as condoms. Is she the new apple annie?

“Price of promiscuity, ping!”

Yep, and as the bugs now develop resistance to anti-biotics I think people may start to think a bit harder before “going for it”.

If I didn’t know better, I would have to say that the author believes pregnancy is an STD that can be easily treated.

This is what I call the "Russian roulette effect." Presumably decrease the risk of a high-risk activity, like adding more chambers to the cylinder of a revolver, and many more people engage in it and more often at the presumably lower risk, resulting in more casualties. Liberals never seem to understand the dynamic effect of playing with the odds in enacting societal change policies, often with the declared intend to ameliorate a malady, only to find that they've exacerbated the problem. The popularity and mandated availability if contraception is one such destructive policy.

Is there any sensible person who listened to Ms. Fluke, or worse “met” with her, who didn’t think of her as soon as the rampant spread of STDs was mentioned?

20M new infections per year is huge. Before long, the entire adult population of the US would be infected. Of course, some people get infected multiple times. But, still, I have trouble believing this number.

I gather then that pregnancy is an infection which results in disease.

What a beautiful world the unbeliever hath wrought.

you have to wonder why Bambi has never made a speech regarding the wide-spread “Health-Related” crisis. Yet he wont stop talking about how Republicans hate those on wheelchairs, toss em of the cliff, etc. And if he did, anyone wanna guess who would get the blame for the last 20 Million STD Infections?

About time for obama to require registration of all sexual organs, especially those with semi-automatic capability, high rate of fire, high capacity magazines, those with collapsible/foldable parts, and mounts of any type.

Confiscation is the ultimate goal, but details of coverage under obamacare is still being studied.

Fun with statistics!

... more than a 250 percent increase in the use of ["emergency contraceptives"] in the last decade and more than a 1000 percent increase since 1995.

... approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1998 ...

An increase in the use of hormonal contraceptives, especially injections, has a strong positive correlation with STD infection rates. Apparently the sort of women who screw around really do think their contraceptives protect them from disease.

There are no sensible persons that listen to her. The 10 who showed up for her world wind tour in Reno while stumping for hussein were for sure not sensible. Not sure if they actually showed up for her or just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Had I known she was going to be in town I would have tossed her some condoms to help defray her (our) costs of her birth control issues. We certainly don’t want her breeding and actually producing any offspring.

P.S. I don’t waste capital letters on redical left wing extremist demokkkrat scumbags. Like mz. fluke.
