Duncan: Dumb cuts from sequester will cost thousands of teachers their jobs By Bernie Becker - 02/24/13 10:44 AM ET
Education Secretary Arne Duncan said Sunday that sequestration would have a devastating affect on school systems around the country.
Duncan said that teachers around the country were already being informed that they wont be retained, and that some 40,000 teachers in all could lose their jobs.
Head Start and programs for children with parents in the military could also be hurt by the $85 billion in sequester cuts, Duncan said on CBSs Face the Nation.
We dont have any ability with dumb cuts like this to figure out what the right thing to do is, Duncan said. It just means a lot more children will not get the kinds of opportunities and services they need.
Duncan has joined other members of the Obama administration, like Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, in trying to point out the real-world implications for the sequester, which is scheduled to go into effect on Friday.
The Education secretary added that the debate over sequestration is taking away from what could be more fruitful discussions over how to limit gun violence.
Thats where I think we should be spending our time, is talking about how we reduce gun violence. Thats the productive use of our time, Duncan said. Spending time talking about stupid issues like this in Congress doesnt make sense.
And will they be “dumb” teachers?
Republicans need to get on the side of American jobs.
Bigtime.
Seriously. American factories, and American jobs. Now.
Dems are going to be hit by this, but where is the GOP? In Asia? What the **** good does being in Asia do when America collapses?
Bring back US jobs now. Change the tax code now, to encourage US factories and production.
Stop stalling.
US has been sold now for 25 years. An entire generation has gone by, with the GOP actively participating in tearing down American production.
Now the Asian producers have become the lead.
GOP you are stuck on the wrong side.
Are teachers paid by the Federal Government or by States? If it’s by the Federal Government, then why are property taxes so high?
Geez you would think that the ONLY thing the federal government spoends monmey on is teachers and cops and firefighters...
Call their bluff- GOP- say OK we will excempt any funds that pay for teachers, cops, and firefighters- how much exactly is that? AND MAKE THEM GIVE YOU A DOLLAR FIGURE!!!!!
All of this “dumb” whining from the communist regime is getting annoying and obnoxious. If the communist politicians want more taxes, I suggest THEY pay them. Americans are TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY!
The soundbite from our side needs to immediately become ‘Obama’s Sequestration’. Rinse and repeat. Our side is so bad at messaging, it is painful to watch.
If I were Education Secrtary Arne Duncan, I would be VERY embarassed by the quotations published. I’m not sure if his language skills are sufficient for this.
No doubt. Brings a whole new meaning to “it’s for the children”. Less teachers (indoctrinators) = less dumbing down of the kiddies. Or flat out lying to them and distorting history.
Elimiating the whole ****ing Dept of Education would be a good start. And since when are teachers federal employees?
That sounds like a leadership problem Mr. Duncan. Perhaps you should step down and let someone more qualified take over.
...or even “Eliminating”....
Someone MUST ask why Obamaphones can’t be touched as a cut?
then you should NOT have a job you are so obviously unqualified for...
It looks like Duncan is more concerned about teachers without jobs than he is about students without teachers. Our schools should NOT be a jobs program for liberal union members! It’s time we start demanding that our kids be educated, NOT INDOCTRINATED, when they go to school.
Maybe Head Start teachers are paid out of the Federal Budget, but Head Start is one great big failure.
Weren’t teachers primarily voting for Obama during the election? I guess there are consequences for stupidity.
I doubt that one single teacher need lose his job over these pretend cuts. But I suspect the administration will order a few layoffs just to prove its point.
Funny how it never costs “Administrators” their jobs.
I’m pretty sure school systems could do with fewer administrators more easily that fewer teachers...
Permanently close the government propaganda machines!
