Alabama makes scholarship offer to eighth-grader
CBS Sports ^ | February 25, 2013 | Tom Fornelli

Alabama's 2013 recruiting class was wrapped up earlier this month, but for Nick Saban it's never too early to start the process of lining up recruits for Alabama's 2017 class.

The Crimson Tide hosted a junior day over the weekend, and one of the players who showed up was Dylan Moses out of Baton Rouge, La. Though Moses is not a junior in high school. He's not even in high school yet, but that didn't stop the eighth-grader from picking up a scholarship offer.

[Snip]

What makes this all a bit crazier is that Alabama isn't even Dylan's first scholarship offer. LSU actually offered Moses a scholarship last summer before he even started in the eighth grade.

Watch Moses's highlight tape yourself to see what all the fuss is about.

Even Woody Allen would be good if he played against little kids...and isn’t that what’s going on here.

6’1” 215 pounds.

I would think it would be difficult to evaluate him since he’s so much bigger than the guys he plays against.

Plus, who knows of CNS will BE at Alabama in 2017?

Tempest in a teapot, IMO.

Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillispie offered scholarships to very young prospects also but he was long gone before they reached college age.

Not really. The NCAA will come down on this like a ton of bricks. They don’t like ‘their’ rules to be flaunted

That’s not a very nice thing to say about an 8th grader you know nothing about other than his race. Whatever you think about how ridiculous that he got a scholarship already.

It has nothing to do with race. Alabama has a history of recruiting less than upstanding "student-athletes".

Signing them young is not unheard of in international soccer. The greatest soccer player in the world, Lionel Messi, signed with FC Barcelona at age 11.

For the most part, Alabama has not had a problem recruiting bad apples. These 4 that were arrested are the exception and not the norm under Saban. They will also never see the field again at Alabama and deserve to see jail time. He missed on these guys, but Saban is usually a good judge of character when recruiting athletes, which is why Bama always has a cohesive locker room full of guys withb a positive, winning attitude.

I sure as hell hope they don't ever get to play on any football field again unless it's in prison. What an embarrassment.

The easiest way to end nonsense like this is to make all scholarship offers and acceptances a 4 year scholarship which cannot be taken back. You are granted a certain number of 4 year scholarships (not 4-1yr. scholarships) and if they don’t pan out, tough, you lose that scholarship for 4 years. With this policy kids will at least be able to finish school if they get injured or a new coach decides a player doesn’t fit his “system”. This will be especially important in basketball where scholarships are at a premium and would end farces like Calipari recruiting a whole team of one-and-dones. They only play one year but you can’t replace the scholarship for another 3 years. Say hello to 3 years of walk-ons.

Wow. Sure wish Academic Scholarships worked that way. You must perform, or you’re done. Have a bad semester due to whatever reason, and that academic scholarship is gone. And it’s not like you can take a semester off due to medical problems and keep that academic scholarship. Why should athletes be any different?

This 8th grader has a long way to go before he qualifies for that scholarship. Maybe the big offers he is receiving from big schools will be incentive to stay out of trouble.

Academic scholarships should be more rigorous, that’s what universities are for, education not football. If it was up to me there wouldn’t be any athletic scholarships unless the student also qualified academically to attend that school, and I don’t mean “athlete” academically qualify. I just don’t believe a student should lose his scholarship just because the coach quits and the player doesn’t fit in with the new coach’s “system”. Of course, if the student gets in trouble, that’s a whole different deal. But you still lose the scholarship, recruit better quality kids. In this case, what if this kid never gets any bigger, or he decides he doesn’t want to play football. As far as I’m concerned Sabin just gave this kid a 4-year scholarship to Alabama. If he doesn’t want to play football, perhaps Sabin should be more careful with his offers.

Besides if a student isn’t making the grade academically there is a paper trail (exams, papers, etc.) that can be used as evidence against them or by the student in defense. It’s a bit trickier in athletics. He didn’t hustle enough, how do you defend yourself against that charge?
