Sharpton's Sequester Sham: Falsely Claims Closing Control Tower Closes An Airport
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 02/25/2013 4:21:39 PM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

Al Sharpton joined the sequester scare-mongering squad on his MSNBC show this evening. Just one problem: the Reverend Al got one of his "facts" embarrassingly wrong. Sharpton claimed that the effect of the sequester would be to close Rep. Paul Ryan's hometown airport in Janesville, Wisconsin. Nuh-uh.

Yes, Southern Wisconsin Regional in Janesville is on a list of 200 airports, 100 of which would have their towers closed under the sequester. But closing a tower by no means closes an airport. Is Al unaware that of the roughly 20,000 airports in the USA, only about 500—less than 3%—have towers? Even if the tower closes, flights will continue to flow in and out of Janesville. There are well-established FAA procedures that pilots follow to communicate with each other at non-towered fields. Shame on Sharpton for his false scare-mongering.

Facts and the truth have never bothered Al Sharpton at any time during his “career”. Why should he break that record now?

Tawana Brawley, anyone?

Anybody who regards Al Sharpton as anything but a piece of gutter filth isn’t worth listening to or knowing.

A Class D airport isn’t too bad for flying into non towered (many D airports are non towered at least part of the time). I wouldn’t want to fly into a Class B or even C no tower.

My apologies. I used ‘sewer rat’ in another post only minutes before.

I don’t believe there are any Class B or C airports on the list of possible tower closures:

I would imagine that any city or airport on that list can always chip in themselves and hire an aircraft controller. If the airport means that much to the city, they can find a way to get it done. It is a complete fallacy that just because the federal government doesn't have the money to do something, it can't get done. What are states for? Or cities, counties, private industries, or charities?

If the government can't afford to fund a food bank, are people just going to stand outside starving while people walk by, or are we just going to go back to having churches and other charities fund them and take care of the problem ourselves?

And by the way, what’s up with Al? Back in the Tawana Brawley days he was a big guy, now he looks like he has AIDS. In his case thinner does not look healthier.

Sorry, I guess I should have said my comment was in general since I didn’t know what class Jamesville was.

Looking at the list, I noticed one I have flown to, Roswell, NM. The airport has at most four commercial flights per day, plus some miscellaneous flights due to an aircraft maintenance facility, and some aircraft testing. All they have to do is use a whiteboard or something to reserve a time for each of them, and the tower is not necessary.

A lot of these are executive airports for private planes and corporate jets. We should turn the tables and counter that the democrats just want to extend corporate welfare to their fat cat rich contributors.

And one airport I would want on this list is not on it, the John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport. Even ABC has done a story on it: ABC News Reports On John Murtha's Pork Laden Airport

Good point. Gee, I wonder why it’s not on there? ;-)

It’s true. Unless a VFR aircraft squawking 1200 is within reception range of an operating control tower, it’s engine is automatically shut-down using the Mode J Lock-out and the pilot must perform an emergency landing. This is part of the new ADS-B system of aircraft traffic control. And since that will eliminate VFR flight, all aircraft will have to file IFR which, because of the sequester, will now take five hours after filing to receive a clearance. Airlines are installing emergency bunk rooms and medical clinics at airports now to help handle the passenger back-up.
