WASHINGTON After more than a century, the Census Bureau is dropping its use of the word "Negro" to describe black Americans in surveys.
Instead of the term that came into use during the Jim Crow era of racial segregation, census forms will use the more modern labels "black" or "African-American".
The change will take effect next year when the Census Bureau distributes its annual American Community Survey to more than 3.5 million U.S. households, Nicholas Jones, chief of the bureau's racial statistics branch, said in an interview.

But I’ll still be called a “Caucasian” right?
Its actually one the options. it’s black, negro or african american.
African American doesn’t work when you’re referring to race. Too many whites from various africa now in the US. They are more african-american than blacks who were born here.
No, caucasian isn’t a choice. Only white
Can we be called Fightin Whitey, and those other guys Indian Warriors?
“Negro” very clearly describes a race
“Caucasian” very clearly describes a race
Black is ridiculous, as they are no more black than I am white. Pathetic that we’re still counting along racial lines.
Was this a "term" that came into use during the DEMOCRAT Jim Crow era, or was it the beginning of the practice of identifying and labeling people by race or color?
Whatever we call them they will have a way to be offended by it. What will they call the tan Hybrids?
Except for general information, why do we even need to know race? I thought the census was to determine how many people live in this country.
And I prefer my ethnic minority designation :Eastern European Caucasian and woe be the racist that calls me white ,especially a non-brat.
African American is the STUPIDIST label for the black race, what the heck do you call a black that isn’t American?
They are black, leave it at that. And Negro is simply simply spanish for black.
How bout we just call them American so neither party can figure out how to target them for campaigns?
Is this from the Federal Department of Semantics ?
Exactly. There is no good reason for the census to include race or even sex anymore since neither of those factors have anything to do with determining population for the purposes of representation.
If anything it is just one more divisive thing used against the people as a whole, allowing politicians to scheme.
The supposedly most color blind nation on the planet has gone absolutely berserk identifying, classifying, catagorizing, triangulating, and pandering to by race, through questionaires, “civil rights” groups, hiring quotas, think tanks, scholarships, product endorsements, entertainment, and every other concievable venue into the public consciousness. We are literally drowning with the left’s race obsession in this country.
Are folks from Haiti or Jamaica African?
I’m old enough to remember when ‘spade’ was the fashionable term to use.
Will the United Negro College Fund be changing its name?
My mother was calling black people Afro Americans up until a couple of years ago. And not one of her black coworkers ever corrected her in the 20 years she worked with them. I told her it had changed to AA and she was dumbfounded. She asked when they changed and I said, “Oh about 30 years ago.” It was the first time in my lifetime I had seen her speechless.
How about we don’t have a racial identification on anything. What’s the point? We don’t need it and most people are more than one race anyway. (DNAlly speaking)
I have a friend from Iowa, a farm boy, whom I call Agro-American.
There is no guarantee that the label "African-American" can guarantee a skin color, just sayin'.
So, which box will Obama check, considering this ethnic heritage?
You may apply the same rule to AA's etc.
Yoots or Yutes...whichever is more comfy (comfier?).
That’s why I refuse to answer that question. And if they’re stupid enough to think a German surname is anything but Caucasian, then screw ‘em.
Didn’t the term negro exist during the slave era, or was it always N****r in those days?
Their ancestors were, just as American blacks' ancestors were.
I agree with you, however many black families have European surnames.
As long as Yellowman’s designation unchanged we’ll be OK. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkXeyNOBNeo
I dont know, my kids are all black and they have irish-german surnames. And first names that are middle english.
Lets just say most people dont expect them to be them.
So is colored still OK as in NAACP, or as Rush puts it, the NAALCP?
I believe they got those names from there slave owners.
Anyone noticed a change in the Form 4473? I bought a new rifle last week and checked the space `White’ where they require you to categorize yourself.
The clerk pointed out to me, “You need to check whether or not you are `Non-Hispanic’.”
I pointed out to her I had already done that: “See, I checked `white’?” Even though I’m also Irish, a little Cherokee and a numismatist, charismatic and slightly deaf from firing too many guns without hearing-protection as a lad.
Sure enough there’s a category—a hoop I don’t recall ever having to jump through—requiring an affirmative reply that you are white, but not Latino, Chicano, La Raza, Mestizo—or whatever—even if you checked another designation.
So I asked her if I could write in “Shaved Ape.”
She said `No,’ and asked me to move along since the place was packed and busy.
Not to hi-jack your thread, but this has been griping me: I won’t be happy until we—whatever color we are—can walk into a gun shop, pick out a gun, pay over the money and walk out, skipping all the government bollocks. So put that in your pipe and smoke it, Fineswine you Nazi she-*****.
Signed, myself, a non-violent, sovereign citizen rapidly running out of chewing gum.
I learn something new everyday.
And how are the census folks going to know this just by surname?
Not trying to argue, just trying to follow your logic. ;-)
My grandmother was Dutch...
No legitimate reason exists for identifying races and ethnicities -- but plenty of illegitimate reasons are around: gerrymandering of electoral districts; encouraging claims of "victimization"; racial considerations when drawing public school attendance zones; and more.
What if we stopped? What if the Federal Government simply stopped keeping records of color, race, and ethnic origin? Wouldn't we take a big step away from racial discrimination if we just stopped keeping records of race?
Also, keep in mind that there's a practical impediment to keeping records of race: the increasing population of people of mixed race. President Obama, Tiger Woods, and many others fall into this category. I remember my late grandmother, when she would see a mixed-race couple, saying with some disdain that "some day we'll all be café au lait." I tend to agree with her conclusion, but not her disdain.
So, is a person who is part "black," part "white," part Latino, and part Asian considered a "minority" for purposes of drawing school zones and Congressional Districts? What about "Native Americans"? What about Muslims -- Sunnis, Shi'ites, Caucasian or "black" converts? Are they entitled to some sort of protected status, or consideration when electoral boundaries are drawn?
Stop the madness. Just stop. No good can come from the government taking note of race or ethnicity.
Will Cablanasian be a choice?
I’m not sure what you mean about the census, however the slave toke the name of the slave owners last name. Being that they were his property, and all. Notice all the Jefferson’s,Washington’s,etc.
I was just curious as to when the classification of people by skin color began to be seen as important. In a melting pot it seems maybe out of place unless politically motivated.
Uh, isn’t “negro” Spanish or Latin for “black”? What’s the difference?
I am STILL awaiting a Census Question that asks "how long have you been on Welfare?" or "Have you EVER held a real job in your life?"....but....that would be "Racist"
After Emancipation the freed slaves were also able to take a new name if they wished. Generally that of a famous person. Just a little more FYI. ;)
Or "darkie" when mom was around.
