Skip to comments.: What happened to the Golden State?
Posted on 02/25/2013 6:45:43 PM PST by Hojczyk
California is no longer a model that other states want to or should emulate. It currently has the nation's third highest unemployment rate, its highest poverty rate and more than one-third of the nation's welfare recipients.
To make a long story short, the same political constituencies that have made Brown's Democratic Party invincible at the ballot box have also made the state unable to compete economically.
These unions also make it impossible to improve how government services are delivered to taxpayers. As a result, while California once had the most admired education system in the nation, it now ranks near the bottom in almost every measured educational category.
The state's powerful environmental lobby has secured a slew of green energy regulations, including strict clean air rules, the nation's first carbon cap-and-trade program and an ambitious renewable energy mandate. As a result, energy prices have shot up, consumers now have less to spend on everything else they need to survive, and many manufacturers can't stay profitable in the state
Over the next four days, The Washington Examiner will look at what ails California, and how it got to its current state of failure. We will look at the state's out-of-control budget and debt, the powerful union interests driving it, the decline of its education system, the failure of its "clean energy" initiatives and the environmental regulations that are wrecking the economy in many regions of the state.

Liberalism (I know, I know ... Mr. Obvious strikes again)
Made the Fools Gold State by the DummyRATS/LibTurds.
The takers killed the goose.
CA has passed the tipping point. There is no return. Even when it finally crashes, it can’t be rebuilt, because the same cast of characters that brought it down will still be in place. CA will become a third world state.
We should be building a fence between California and America.
In a word: Marxism.
The people of California mistakenly believe they can use Marx’s ideas to help the middle class.
But that’s as insane as arguing you can use Hitler’s ideas to help the Jews.
They’re antithetical philosophies.
Karl Marx wrote the Communist Manifesto as a recipe to get rid of the middle class. California has adopted his ideas - from a progressive tax code to doing more things by hand to dissolving the border.
And then everyone wonders what happened?
So now you’re left with Communism: a rich, upper elite running a system for the happy little peasants.
Want the middle class back? You’ll have to dump the Marxism.
Good luck doing that in California.
Great, America's Haiti.
What happened to CA is the same thing that happened to New York. You have a high concentration of the population in an urban area that is very very liberal as well as huge “consumers” of government handouts and that same area has the population numbers to control the elections.
Like New York, California was once a great state.
Now both are so far gone, so screwed up and so in the hole that the only ending I see is a complete crash.
I don’t see where either one can be saved at this point.
The only hope for either one, IMHO, is if it plays out much like the ending of “Atlas Shrugged”.
I hope we survive long enough for the “way” (to be) “clear”.
A massive influx of NY'rs in the 70's along with other northeast liberals, and of course the unchecked Mexican invasion. The illegals overloaded the system, and the new resident liberals refused all attempts to pass laws to control them.
Boxer is an excellent example of what invaded the state from the NE.
This story is 10 years overdue.
I’m sure that the vast majority of the current residents of Californicate are very happy with the current state of the “Golden State” ... or else they would change things.
Leftists ruined it.
I noticed at the link, that this is a first installment of a four part article to appear over coming days. I look forward to the rest.
dimorats and illegal aliens....other than that all is well
Boxer is an excellent example of what invaded the state from the NE.
Finally, someone else who can see beyond the end of their nose! What has happened in California is a direct result of “the Liberal Migration” from places like New York. These trolls, after succeeding in the destruction of their “nests” on the East Coast, went looking for another place to take a crap, and unfortunately, found California. The really sad thing is all these morons on FR who counsel “cutting California loose” can’t see that no matter where they are currently residing, the “Liberal Seeds” are already there and sprouting. They seem to be saying “we’ve got ours” (for the time being) so what the hell do we care about the rest of the country. Let’s “pontificate” on FR about how smart we are!
California will just keep doing the same as long as their checks are accepted.
Not a place you would want to walk around on foot, though not so many years before, you might have gotten away with it.
Listen, if everyone leaves, I'll stay and try and fix it, but it will take time...Someday I'll send word when everything is A-OK...oh yeah..
If the few remaining conservatives left that would be okay, since it would help electorally in the states they go to. But the rest need to stay where they are.
You guys are ob obviously tourists.
Just look at the crime stats for example.. Crime in the 1980s was *substantially* higher than it is now. In fact, LA's per capita crime rates have been dropping dramatically for many years and are generally much lower than other major cities in other states.
Ya don't have to believe me, just look it up.
After you restore the California I grew up in, I'll consider coming back.
These people are tourist...Don’t sweat it...
BTW, not only is Boxer from the east coast, but so is Pelosi, etc, etc...The east coast totally infect the west coast many years ago...It’s the price of life in paradise...
Besides, the entire country is now in the same boat...Actually, it’s much much worse off. Wait till the rest find out just how bad off.
What Happened to the Golden State?
Editorial in the San Francisco Chronicle:
Californians’ shifting views on illegal immigration
Sunday, February 24, 2013
In 1994, California voters passed Proposition 187, which sought to deny basic services to illegal immigrants. The controversial initiative (which was never implemented, as the courts declared it to be unconstitutional) was the canary in the coal mine for the rest of the nation on the topic of illegal immigration.
Within a decade, states and counties all over the nation were competing to see who could create the harshest anti-immigrant proposal.
But the latest Field Poll should alert the rest of the country about how swiftly the voters can change their minds on illegal immigration - and what that shift will mean for the nation’s politics.
The newest Field Poll shows that a whopping 90 percent of California voters now support offering a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who have lived for years in the United States and have stayed out of trouble.
There’s resounding support (76 percent) for guest-worker programs and for offering more visas to highly skilled immigrants (73 percent).
California voters are now so open to immigration that even still-controversial ideas, such as offering driver’s licenses to undocumented residents, get a thumbs-up - a 52 to 43 percent majority now favors issuing the licenses.
Sixty percent of voters believe that undocumented students should be allowed to pay the same tuition rates as other residents to attend public universities.
These are startling numbers. In many ways, they are good news - they show that California’s voters have grown more humane. After living and working among undocumented immigrants for two decades, they accept that the people who have made their lives here deserve a place here, paperwork or not.
While Californians still dislike illegal immigration - the poll also notes that 65 percent of voters support increasing the number of federal agents on the U.S.-Mexico border, and 57 percent want strong penalties for those who hire illegal immigrants - they’ve clearly made a distinction between immigration as an issue and the immigrants themselves.
On a state level, this has been great for the Democratic Party. Although Proposition 187 propelled Republican governor Pete Wilson to re-election in 1994, support of anti-immigration positions became an albatross for the GOP in the ensuing decades. Today, two-thirds of the seats in both houses of the Legislature are held by Democrats. And as California’s demographics continue to shift away from older, whiter voters and toward a younger, more diverse electorate, the Republican Party may find itself more and more marginalized.
On a national level, the Republican Party is beginning to realize that it may suffer the same fate, which is why it’s trying so desperately to rehabilitate its image with Latino voters.
But California’s experience suggests that this rehabilitation will take more than delivering the same message in Spanish: It’s going to take a wholesale rethinking of many policies, including how the country handles the 11 million undocumented people already living within our borders. A path to citizenship isn’t just smart policy - in the long run, it’s smart politics, too.
Yes California was once Paradise! The Dem’s have had total control about 23 years now. It don’t take long. Prior a long string of Republican guidance. Yes there was small breaks, BUTT not enough to trash it like it is.
Not until the Dem’s took total control could they implement their Detroit remodeling project.
“California is no longer a model that other states want to or should emulate.”
Who the heck are you talking about? CA is right on the glide path planned for the entire nation.
It seems that Conn Carroll isn’t going to mention unending mass immigration as one of the reasons for the state’s decline, and therefore the series of articles will at best be incomplete, and at worst worthless.
The white population in California is unfortunately not conservative overall, so even w/o the booming Hispanic and Asian populations the state would still most likely be in serious trouble, but the continual importation of future Democrats only makes mattes worse. There is likely no hope for California because the population is increasingly made up of people who are never going to vote Republican, despite the fantasies of people like Rubio and the entire Bush family.
These “undocumented” people hate our country and have no interest in becoming responsible citizens. They had no notion of citizenship from the countries they fled and they have none for this country either.
Easy - it turned “Brown”.
Big deal...BTW, half that article is bull cheet.
On the other hand, look at the so-called big red states like Texas...
Read it and weep..
Study: 70% of Texas illegal immigrant families receive welfare
In Texas, 54 percent of legal immigrants and 70 percent of illegal immigrants receive welfare assistance, with illegal immigrants generally receiving benefits on behalf of their U.S.-born children
Overall, Texas tied with California and New York for the second highest immigrant welfare rates behind Arizona.
Texas showed 61 percent of households headed by an immigrant utilizing at least one program compared to the 42 percent of Texas natives on welfare.
This is partly due to the large share of immigrants with low levels of education and their resulting low incomes not their legal status or an unwillingness to work, Steve Camorata, Director of Research at CIS, said.
The tourist in other states are a bit slow...They're already there...They just don't know it. Probably why some of their governors are in CA begging for money and biz.
That article you provided does get one thing right; for the GOP to win over Hispanics and Asians it would take more than just caving and going along with liberal comprehensive immigration reform. The reason Hispanics in particular vote Democrat is because they are a natural Democrat constituency. They vote Democrat because they are a liberal population on most issues. They overwhelmingly support Obamacare. They support ever more gun control and have little regard for the Second Amendment. They look unfavorably on capitalism. They support bigger government. The Democrats would be hard pressed to design a more perfect voter. The evidence suggest that 25-30% of the latinos are consistently open to voting Republican. And even if the GOP can consistently repeat Bush’s 40% in 2004 (the figure so often repeated as the magic number for Republicans), then simple math says that as the Hispanic electorate grows, the net loss for the GOP will grow as well.
Yet somehow most of the GOP leadership and elite conservative voices promote the utter nonsense that Hispanics are natural Republicans/conservatives, who would flock to us if only we’d become liberal on immigration. They push the garbage that if only we surrender on this one issue, then Hispanics will suddenly forget all the other issues on which they prefer the Democrats.
Do the Rubios and Bushes really believe the crap they push? I find it hard to believe they can really believe such fantasies. They should be honest and tell us that immigration will just be the first of many issues we have to go left on in order to win over immigrant communities.
Mental deficient ignoramuses discovered a strategy to get elected.
Hundreds of them. An endless supply.
See my previous post, #38.
The perfect storm.
It is now the rust state.
Guv Moonbeam was heard yelling “there’s gold in them there pockets”.
Assuming we can agree on a previous post on this thread, that would be a logical impossibility.
I agree that this is the complete, rational and logical explanation :
"What happened to CA is the same thing that happened to New York. You have a high concentration of the population in an urban area that is very very liberal as well as huge consumers of government handouts and that same area has the population numbers to control the elections."
Being, literally, too stupid to even imagine that that is an untenable, unstable, temporary aberration.
You're arguing like the real losers who advise a rape victim that, if she can't prevent it, she might as well enjoy it. Most Californians, with a long memory of the past, aren't buying your social snake oil.
KMA! Born there in 1947, left in 2006.
How about you, ace? Want to beat that?
I do not give a damn about the statistics of your precious inner city cesspool. I moved further out over the decades and finished with California way out in Ventura county.
Take your "tourist" and shove it. Born in what then was known as Cedars of Lebanon hospital. You have a longer history of living in L.A. bring it on tough guy!
You sure are an example of a typical Californian.
Texas and California both are 38% Hispanic.
Yes, the North Eastern socialists overran the state and they are still coming.
I’m leaving just as soon as I retire. You can go down with the state and see your vote overwhelmed every election. I will go to a conservative state that needs me to help preserve it.
If we had enough conservative Californians moving to Colorado and Washington, we could save those state from going full on liberal.
I plan to fight by saving a state that is salvageable, not by remaining in one where the fight is hopeless.
All that happens in California is that my vote is swamped and the liberal candidate gets all of California’s electoral votes anyway. What good is my vote anyway? I will go to a state where my vote still counts.
What happened to California? People write “liberalism, socialism, etc”.
Bullcrap. Pure, unadulterated Marxism via the Communist Party USA infiltrated and subverted every aspect of normal, pro-American life in the state. Such as:
*Movie industry, esp. Hollywood - John Howard Lawson, the KGB’s “commissar” of Hollywood
*Academia - look at how many communists, marxists, sociaists, and far-left sympathizers hold teaching positions in the universities, high schools, and on downward. The Un. of California system has been a hiring hall for the Communist Party USA and its supporters since the 1950’s, if not earlier
*Religion - The CPUSA has run a number of fronts with fake clergymen (Morford, Melish, Fletcher, etc) as well as having sympathizers in large, black churches such as the Glide Memorial Church. They get a lot of attention at demonstrations, in meetings with political figures, etc. Never are exposed as reds
*Crime: Leftist police chiefs and sheriffs allow certain criminal groups to operate almost unhindered. They blame society for the crimes, not the criminals, and you can see the results. LA has has an estimated 10,000 gangs with approximately 100,000 members (as reported over the years - I doubt this figure is accurate, and probably way too high re what a real gang is). Yet the Bloods and Crips are products of LA.
*OJ Trial: For blacks it was “pay back whitey time”.
*Rodney King beating and trial of officers. Another “pay back whitey” bing of killings and lootings (something King would not have wanted at all).
*Rise of black extremist groups, communist terrorist organizations, etc. SLA -Symbionese Liberation Army, Weather Underground (key suspects in the death of Police Officer McDonald in S.F., among others); US; Black Panther Party; Maoists in Chinatown.
*Almost complete control of labor/labor unions by the reds - ILWU - Harry Bridges, Soviet agent and CPUSA leader, of the International Longshoremen and Warehouse Workers Union; SEIU; UE (United Electrical Workers); key teachers unions and federations; etc.
*Communist politicans from Hugh DeLacy (a great friend of Leon Panetta, by Panetta’s own admissions - see www.keywiki.org for documentation); Dellums - traitor re Grenada reds and his aides Carliotta Scott and now Rep. Barbara Lee (as red as they come); Rep. Judy Chu; Mark Alarcon, sister of CPUSA leader Evelina Alarcon; the Burton brothers and one wife; Don Edwards, ties to Soviet spies Dodd and Stern; Ilana Hancock; etc.
*Massive drug use tolerance - Hollywood!, Mexican gangs, liberal customers
*Unrealistic environmental regulations which are driving businesses/jobs out of the state and will continue to do so ad nauseum
*Liberal newspapers who only tell you what they want to, instead of what they should be covering
*Pseudo intellectuals from Hollywood who are asked for their opinions and comments on things they are definitely not qualified to talk about
*Cults - Jonestown (Marxist Jim Jones); Heavens’ Gate; The Manson Family, etc.
*Degenerate and degrading music, esp. RAP. THe praising of “gangsterism” in words/music by the rappers, and then them leading such lives. A horrible example for the uninformed to follow.
*Literally no restraints on demeaning and obscene sexual behavior in public. I don’t give a damn what the fringe sexual freaks do in the privacy of their homes, but that stuff does not belong on the streets in front of children and more morality-based folk.
Need I go on?
