To solve our debt problems, letís sell Alaska
Washington Post ^ | 2/25/13 | WP

Posted on 02/25/2013 7:24:29 PM PST by mgist

To solve our debt problems, let’s sell Alaska Treadwell makes a strong case for a home-grown offer. He notes that of Alaska’s 365 million acres, the state government already owns 103 million, which were deeded at the time of statehood. An additional 44 million acres came with the Alaska Native Claims Act. “U.S. cash in our till would barely cover a week of federal deficits, but we believe the potential here is worth trillions, especially if we gained freedom to drill it,” Treadwell said. “Location, location, location.”

Nah. Keep AK; sell CA, OR, and Washington.

Of course, if they sold Alaska but continued spending as they are, it wouldn’t help.

Let's scrap socialism, reduce the size of government and grow ourselves out of debt. It makes far more sense to exploit the resources in Alaska than to sell it so someone who whould do exactly what the socialist government prevents us from doing.

Now that I think about it, I'd like to buy Alaska. How much?

There is a "better idea" already circulating in Washington.

All told there is over $19 trillion residing in private 401-K and IRA accounts.

Washington simply needs to "borrow" these...and eve3rything will be hunky-dory.

Every third post is a lefty, imagining him or her self as clever by making a joke about selling off the Palins.

They don't have the slightest idea why the Palins are worthy of hate, they just know that to be truly cool, according to the beautiful people in hollywood and the media, they have to hate Palins.

How about giving back all federal lands to states and allowing states do what their citizens decide with their lands?

Alaska is crippled with federal intervention. Bureaucrats sitting in DC have no clue to what is happening in Western MD or VA, let alone what the real situation is in AK.

Alaska is a Republic waiting to happen if it wasn't for the native welfare population.

ConservativeInPA is the correct post. The premise that the Federal govt can own or sell a soveriegn state’s land is false.

Why should Alaska want to stay in the US? I’d be shocked if it was due to the Entitled. But nothing should surprise us anymore.

God is not going to save us (unfortunately).

This is all going to continue down the slippery slope and have to play itself out to the sadly obvious conclusion.

Odds are nearly non existent that it won’t involve significant violence and the severe suffering of a lot of people.

I am very sad to see my great country already turned into a fascist crap hole where the *majority* of the people have no understanding of, nor amazingly any desire for, the liberties our ancestors suffered and died for. Makes me sick.

ONE THING; The largest GOLD, Copper, Molybdenum discovery ever made on this planet has been discovered right by Anchorage(Pebble Mine)..
Above ground you do not have to dig for it..

Most of Alaska has coal deposits a few feet underground..
Theres more natural gas that’s even been registered.. but what is registered is humongous.. Then there’e the oil... most of which is off limits on federal land.. but not all..

Then; theres the fish.. crabs, clams, and shrimp..
Alaska is almost as half as big as the lower 48... ITSELF..

>>>Alaska is a Republic waiting to happen if it wasn’t for the native welfare population.<<<

I live in a village which is about 70 percent Alaska Native. Actually, everyone is on welfare up here, in all races, but out of all the racial groups, the Natives are better off than anyone else. Let me explain.

Lots of people work in some sort of government job (I’m a teacher in a public school, for instance). That’s true both out here in the Bush and on the road in places like Anchorage and Fairbanks. However, the Native population has something that will save them in the long run. I’ve lived here most of my adult life, so I know what I’m saying.

There is a long tradition of subsistence living among the Native population (and among those of us living with them out here). This means that people spend a significant part of their year harvesting, hunting, and processing game animals and berries. A lot of families here catch hundreds of salmon, a moose, a bear, buckets of berries, and other fish that happen to come into the net, and that takes a lot of hard work. Yes, there is a lot of welfare, too, but there is still a tradition of hard work and productive effort. All of my students go to fish camp. In addition, we have to grow a lot of our own food in home gardens, and learn to store it for the winter.

You see some of this on the road, and a bit of it in the cities, but out here, it’s a powerful force in the lives of the people who live here.

What the Native people tell me is that they expect welfare to disappear one day, along with a lot of the outsiders looking for oil and gold. (They would like me and my family to stay, though.) If the welfare vanished, a lot of my Native neighbors would shrug their shoulders and go on with their lives. This is very different from what I’d expect from the welfared populations in the Lower 48 cities, but it’s about what I’d think would happen in Appalachia and the South, too.

A lot of us expect that Alaskan Republic to appear one day anyhow. Selling us off to the Russians or the Chinese would be war, and the Natives would be fighting along with everyone else. And since a lot of Natives grew up with guns, many are wicked shots; some of my students graduated to become snipers in the Army Rangers fighting in vague locations in the Middle East.

Be well down there. Keep warm.

I’m not saying this as an egotistical, “the world revolves around us” American.

But I believe that when this country completes its descent into the destruction of our Republic, as it surely will do, then a darkness will come over the western world.

This country was given by fate and circumstance resources beyond belief and the foresight and guidance of great men. These gifts have been squandered and debauched more than seems possible.

I’m not religious myself, but I have to agree that there is a biblical sort of accounting coming for what we have become. There is not just greed and corruption in our capital, there is pure, genuine evil. Men without souls are in power. And the remaining good people simply can’t grasp the lengths to which they are going, they will go, to destroy us.

Any person that is not sincerely frightened by the progression of current events is either delusional, or one of the bad guys.

As a Canadian, I do support American excellence. I know for a fact that the threat of nuclear war kept the west safe for decades during the cold war. I am grateful to my southern brothers and sisters. Don’t apologize for being in a once great country.

I am a follower of Jesus, and yes you are right, evil has a grip and doesn’t want to let go. I also believe that if men and women of moral courage stand up, evil will not prevail. A single candle can repel darkness, no amount of darkness can overcome a source of light. Now take that same candle and add thousands, no add millions more, darkness can never prevail.

We (as the free west) need to stand up in unison, support one another, and turn our countries back to God. We can’t let the enemy divide and conquer. We are worth the effort, we are worthy to bleed for if that’s what it takes. Also know in these uncertain and dreary times that many many Canadians stand behind you and we will not quietly fade away. We also have a military reputation, our soldiers are feared, I was one and personally saw that. We have a moral obligation to resist tyranny, to resist evil wherever we may find it.

God bless us and keep us and make us strong.

Let me elaborate on my comment about the native welfare population.

My comment wasn't directed at natives so much, but at our government that provides the welfare that has limited natives' outcomes.

I suspect it is natural for many, regardless of background, to take a handout from government. In fact, there are many in the lower 48 that work very hard and are specifically educated (yes, it is taught in schools) at how to fill out all of the forms to obtain government assistance.

The problem with native populations in America is that so much is controlled by government. That extends to natural resources and activities that can occur on native land. It is regulation on steroids. It gets to the point where a people can not make decisions on their own since they have become so dependent on government. Worse yet, it is a government that is thousands of miles away and has no idea of local needs.

My only gripe with natives is that they except the payoff from government when they could demand to control their own destinies - not as Native Americans, but as Americans - with the same property rights, local control and little to no interference from the federal government. (Well maybe not without the federal government because no one get that, but it would be refreshing that they demand it.)
