$200 For A Box of 22LR Ammo

Have you tried to buy ammo in the past sixty days? The ability of find any handgun ammunition is almost impossible unless you are willing to pay as much as twice the normal price. Certain rifle calibers, such as .223 Remington and 308 Winchester are selling for a $1 to $2 a round.

A twenty round box of 223 Remington was selling for about $8 a box two months ago. Now some types of 223 Remington are selling for $35 a box of twenty. This is pure manmade panic buying. I have been writing for over five years about the volatility of ammo availability and price, now the chickens have come home to roost.

This is not a natural, disaster driven crisis that makes the public go out and desperately seek guns and ammo because the world is coming to an end. This is purely a politically driven Bravo Sierra (BS) manmade panic buying problem.

However what it is, is an excellent training tool for those who continue to sit on the fence of personal protection and support of the Constitution. The bad guys under the “Klingon Cloaking Devise” of elected politicians (primarily Democrats) are after your firearms and more importantly your Constitutional rights under the 2nd Amendment. You may believe it is someone else’s job to do all the heavy lifting in protecting you from evil.

If weakness is the basis you want to build your life and the safety of your family on so be it, but how dare you expect someone else to risk their life to rush in and save you because you refused to prepare.

In time of real crisis I project a 50 round box of 22lr ammo will trade for the current value of an ounce of silver. So if silver is $200 an ounce that will make a 22lr bullet worth $4 a round. If you think I am off the mark go out and try to buy a box of 22lr ammo today. Today’s ammo crisis is not real, but there is no 22lr to be found and that is real.

I reload all my centerfire ammo. (Of course, not 22lr)

But even with reloading, the individual componemts are getting harder to find.

I have about 12,000 rounds of 22 that I enjoy for plinking. Hopefully that will last until all this blows over.

I guess I was smart to buy thousands of rounds of 22lr years ago as I prepared to fight two counter revolutions.

The ammo is out there, like the author says. (Local gun show had plenty). And it’s expensive. But I view it like cost-averaging a stock, I buy a bit every month. It’s not going to get cheaper anytime soon.

Just saw a vid of how CCI makes 22lr. It was pretty amazing.

An article a while back stated the situation starkly:

This is not a society stocking up on arms and ammo because they fear confiscation,
this is a society preparing for war.

I’ve been searching for CCI Stingers since late November, to no avail. It’s like they stopped making them. I’d like to know who is finding any and where.

Ammo is the “Beanie Babies” of today and it may be that many of the people who specialized in buying Beanie Babies are involved in this too.

As far a cost goes for 22LR in an SHTF scenario, the cost of a box or a single round will be higher than even the author knows.

The main items in value during the SHTF will be food, ammo, medical supplies and sanitation supplies. A case of NeoSporin will be worth more than a skid of gold or silver.

How is the crisis not real? The demand far outstrips the supply and manufacturers cannot keep up. Sounds like a severe shortage/crisis to me.

Couple that with the government purchases of more than TWO BILLION rounds and you have manufacturers like Federal and Remington who cannot keep up or even come close.

Good thing for me, I have a Fleet Farm and Gander Mountain close by. I visit them both a couple times each week and I've had no problem replenishing. I just bought crap Remington Thunderbolt 22lr, 500 for $18. But, it's better than nothing and my Sig/GSG 1911-22 ate it just fine.

I often hear in news stories about the lunatics in mass shootings having "thousands of rounds of ammunition." BFD. I hope to have 10s of thousands as I head into 2014. When I'm sending 5000 downrange per year, 10000 is nice.

A friend will tell a friend who tells a friend; next thing I know I have 10 people wanting ammo from just one neighbor's word of mouth.

Speaking only for myself, that would be a cause for concern, OpSec-wise.

When the gun grabers loose their effort to take away guns, they WILL go after ammunition. I predict (I hope I’m wrong) that ammunition manufacture and sale to the general public will be OUTLAWED. You won’t need a gun if you can fire it.

$200 a box?

That’s a far cry from when I was a kid back in the 60’s buying ammo for my Rem512. Seems I always bought shorts, cause they were cheaper than the long rifles. I think I was paying around 35 cents a box.

They will do it with required background checks and heavy taxes for each purchase. It will be done under the umbrella of oBama care, much like the heavy cigarette taxes.

Maybe we need “anti hoarding laws” for ammunition, you know punish anyone who has thought ahead and bought ammo ahead of time....

I am being sarcastic here
