FORT HUACHUCA — For nearly a half century the 11th Signal Brigade headquarters has been associated with this southern Arizona Army post in some form or another, first as the 11th Signal Group which arrived in 1966.
But on Feb. 18, the Department approved the relocation of the approximately 100 personnel headquarters to Fort Hood, Texas.
The local announcement was made Monday.
However, the brigade’s 40th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, consisting of nearly 500 people, will remain on Fort Huachuca, according to the 11th’s public affairs noncommissioned officer Staff Sgt. Kelvin Ringold.
The brigade headquarters returned from a deployment to Afghanistan late last year.
The brigade has four expeditionary signal battalions, the 40th, the 86th — which once was on Fort Huachuca but was relocated a couple of years go to Fort Bliss, Texas — and the 57th and 62nd at Fort Hood. Neither the 57th nor the 62nd have been assigned to the Arizona post.
According to a press release the relocation is not associated with Base Realignment and Closure 2005 directed actions.
Completion of the relocation is tentatively scheduled to take place by July 2013 but the actual movement date is being worked out and could take place as late as the summer of 2014, the release stated.
The force structure action will locate the 11th Signal Brigade Headquarters with their higher headquarters, III Corps, at Fort Hood, the release stated, adding the 11th has been aligned with III Corps since Oct. 16, 2009.
At one time, the brigade and its various battalions and separate companies stationed on Fort Huachuca numbered more than 1,500 people.
The brigade and all its battalions is considered the most deployed Signal Corps unit in the Army.
I never could understand why they named Ft. Hood after possibly the worst general in the Confederacy.
He may have even been the worst of either side.
Boy, that is an end to an era! Was STRATCOM in Tehran (72-74) but missed out on being assigned to the 11th Silly Group instead going to the luxurious accommodations with USAEPG.

Visited my son at Ft Huachuca when he graduated from AIT. Seemed like a real nice place to be stationed.
It is because Gen Hood is the most famous Texan General from either side from the Civil War, aka “the late unpleasantness.”

I was former USACC (you-sack), switched over to MI and got stuck in EPG. Years of our lives we'll never get back. I wonder if EPG will be commanded by MI officers now, or will EPG be booted to Ft. Hood too?
Remember fondly my stint at Radio School (05B20) November 1967 at good old Fort Hoochy Coochie.
When I returned from RVN in 1968 I was assigned to a frequency monitoring station out in the middle of the desert monitoring radio freqs for NASA’s Apollo flight communications. My new wife and I lived on base housing that was rumored to be the officers housing from the cavalry days, one of the bedrooms in the house had a pull up trapdoor in it.
What a place.

I doubt if EPG will go anywhere as the conditions and location in close proximity to the S2 guys is needed for the developmental stages of their toys. I was 31S/32D and operated the section for the tactical crypto development toys. Also worked with the first drones in ‘74/75.
I absolutely loved it there. It was actually the springboard to my eventually starting my own design and development consultancy.
