Will Sen. Tom Coburn Buy Off on the "Schumer Sell-Out"?
GOA ^ | Feb 27, 2013 | GOA Staff

Posted on 02/27/2013 9:09:58 AM PST by EXCH54FE

Anti-gun Sen. Charles Schumer's staff is leaking out to the press the Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn is "on the verge" of caving in and agreeing to a ban on private gun sales -- and requiring virtually every American to get the government's approval before exercising their constitutional right to become a gun owner.

According to The Washington Post (2/23/13), the remaining sticking point is Coburn's reluctance to require a 4473 for every private transaction. Were this to occur, ATF's practice of going into gun stores and copying all the 4473's -- a practice which has been documented by GOA -- would soon produce a national gun registry.

Schumer's people have also let it be known that they may have Susan Collins (R-ME), John McCain (R-AZ), and Jeff Flake (R-AZ) in the bag. (Note to gun owners in these states: These Senators really need to hear from you!)

Let's assume, for the sake of argument, that the final version of the "Schumer sell-out" prohibits any paperwork from being kept on private gun sales.

According to scholar John Lott, 8% of all gun purchases are currently blocked by the FBI. But, according to a recent study by the Department of Justice, only 1.8% of the 8% are blocked because they are "denied." That means that 6.2% are neither "denied" nor "approved." However, because most gun sellers won't sell a firearm under these circumstances, even after three days, these legal gun purchasers are permanently denied their constitutional rights by bureaucratic fiat.

Although the FBI is legally required to state a reason for blocking a gun purchase within five days, it NEVER complies with the law -- daring purchasers, instead, to "sue us." Most purchasers, lack the means to do just that.

"Shall not be infringed." There should be no regulation. In fact, private arms should equal or surpass the arms used by the government. The elected officials in washington is WHY we have the 2nd ammendment. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

If the GOP caves to any new laws or regulations, they're doing it to protect their own power and priveledge - for themselves - and not for We the People and our protection.

I called Coburns office yesterday and the lady who answered the phone said it is true that Coburn is working to pass legislation for gun control. Her exact quote..”to make the world safer”. Coburn has sold out Oklahoma and all those who worked to get him elected...he is a traitor. Also he is not running for reelection so he does not care.

..”to make the world safer”

So... disarming the law-abiding makes the world safer. Coburn, like so many others entrenched in the walled city that is DC, has become jaded to the realities of life as lived by the "little people."

Right now.. they all disgust me. None are to be trusted.

Every one of these 535 can & will be bought out or blackmailed by the elites. Smell the coffee - you have NO representation in the government process. We live in a totalitarian nation.

Yep. Not a word about the criminals doing all the damage because they don't care about laws. Why not toughen the gun CRIME laws and scare the living daylights out of anyone who uses a gun for a crime? How about life behind bars with no chance of parole if you ILLEGALLY use a gun?

Politicians always target the innocent. Targeting the guilty would require them to actually do their jobs and earn their pay checks.

Agee 100%! Shelby didn't care that his own state's GOP office called on him to retract his Hagel support.

They're all on the dole - for life - compliments of me, you and the lobbyists, so they really don't give a flip about us or our future. Now, get back to work!

Agree...although I am hearing reports that Coburn has "shot down any hopes of a bi-partisan" gun control agreements. It's likely a MSM headfake.

Here are Coburns office numbers:

918-581-7651 (Tulsa)
405-231-4941 (OKC)

Okies...if Coburn isn't representing you on this...then call!

It seems Coburn is feeling the heat. Before I was getting the same response as yellowdoghunter. Now his office is saying he won’t support any new gun control measures. Keep the pressure up even if you don’t live in OK. You can’t vote him out, but you can support a primary challenger. Let them know that.
