What an odd thing to say, God Himself says He neither sleeps or slumbers.

As Alex Murphy pointed out (Link) the more complete quote was this:

There have also been moments in which the waters were turbulent and the wind contrary, as throughout the history of the church, and the Lord seemed to be asleep," he said. "But I have always known that the Lord is in that boat and that the boat of the church is not mine, it is not ours, but it is his and he does not let it sink...."

The Telegraph gave their coverage of the final address the provocative title Pope's final address: God was asleep on my watch

He said it SEEMED LIKE. He wasn’t saying God WAS asleep. He was simply expressing his frustration. I feel the same way sometimes, when I all the evil in the world winning.
