Economic Official Sperling Warned Woodward (Alleged sender of 'regret' email)

The White House official whom Bob Woodward charged had crosssed a line by saying he would "regret" printing his version of a set of Washington negotiations was Gene Sperling, the director of the White House Economic Council, a source familiar with the exchange told BuzzFeed Wednesday.

The email from Sperling to Woodward, which Woodward read to Politico Wednesday, has transfixed Washington, with Republicans and some in the press charging that it embodies a White House lording it over a cowed press corps.

Woodward, Politico reported, called the top official — identified to BuzzFeed as Sperling — to tell him that he would question Obama's account of negotiations leading to the "sequester" — automatic cuts set to take effect next month.

The aide "yelled at me for about a half hour," Woodward said, and then sent a follow-up email that read, in part: "You're focusing on a few specific trees that give a very wrong impression of the forest. But perhaps we will just not see eye to eye here. … I think you will regret staking out that claim."

Gene B. Sperling ~ is a Cuomo Retread ~ which means he has associates who are very very very dangerous. The Clintons probably took him on board to reduce the threats.

This from Wikipedia:

Gene B. Sperling is an American lawyer and Democratic Party political figure, currently serving as Director of the National Economic Council under President Barack Obama.

Sperling was a principal negotiator with then-Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers of the Financial Modernization Act of 1999, also known as the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act.

Gramm-Leach-Bliley repealed large portions of the depression-era Glass-Steagall Act allowing banks, securities firms and insurance companies to merge.

Also in 1999, together with United States Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky, Sperling successfully negotiated and concluded the China-World Trade Organization agreement in Beijing, paving the way for China to enter the WTO in 2001.

Sperling was also the chief economic advisor for Hillary Clinton during her presidential campaign.

Sperling was also on the staff of the Council on Foreign Relations, where he founded and served as director of the Center for Universal Education—an organization focused on ensuring quality, universal education for the world’s poorest children.

From 2009 to 2011, Sperling served as a counselor to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, advising on fiscal, budget, tax, job creation and small business issues.

Senior Obama administration officials met with business leaders to argue that House Speaker John Boehner’s “Plan B” could put the nation on a path to go over the fiscal cliff, a source familiar with the meeting told ABC News this afternoon.

The effort is just the latest example of the Obama administration trying to urge the Republican Party’s supporters in the business community to urge its Tea Party side to be more willing to compromise with Democrats.

The Obama administration officials present were chief of staff Jack Lew, senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, Director of the National Economic Council Gene Sperling, and Office of Management and Budget director Jeff Zients.

Sperling was on Broco Bama’s debate prep team:

“LAS VEGAS — President Obama convened the final debate camp of his political career here on Sunday, huddling with top advisers at a posh lakeside resort 20 miles east of the Strip for a three-day crash course on Republican rival Mitt Romney.

Aides said a “debate prep team” ...

Obama is being coached by a group of veteran Democratic operatives and inner-circle White House advisers, aides said, including ... Gene Sperling, and chief of staff Jack Lew.”

This was the debate where Zero looked stoned, and gave Romney hope.

It will be interesting to see if this incident puts a few cracks in the presses’ slobbering love affair with Obama. I don’t doubt most will (or already are) rushing to his defense. But there might just be a few who don’t like the idea of “one of their own” getting bullied. We’ll see.

It’s not like Bob Woodward is a conservative like Michelle Malkin who can be safely attacked & trashed by the WH.

No, this is the Noble Venerable One, of the legendary duo Woodward & Bernstein, who once upon a time brought down the hellish Nixon and saved the world for liberalism.

It is said that when Joan of Arc was burned at the stake an English soldier cried out, “We are lost! We have burned a saint!”

So could it be similarly uttered now in the halls of power at 1600 Penn? Sperling accused Woodward of “crossing a line”. It may be the WH that has done the crossing. Where is the dissociating? “Gene Sperling speaks only for himself, not for this administration.” Don’t see it.
