Republican leaders’ ‘meeting’ with Obama: Seven minutes
Washington Times ^ | Wednesday, February 27, 2013 | Dave Boyer

Never let it be said that President Obama has failed to spend time with Republican leaders in seeking an alternative to automatic budget cuts that are due to hit most federal departments Friday. On Wednesday, for example, the president gave GOP lawmakers as much as seven minutes, a rare face-to-face encounter that the White House described as a “meeting.”

The White House’s characterization of this momentary huddle at the Capitol as a meeting illuminates Mr. Obama’s strategy in dealing with Republicans on the budget cuts and other fiscal deadlines.

With speeches and other staged events, the president has tried to build public pressure for his agenda of tax increases coupled with spending cuts.

But he has made little time for negotiating directly with lawmakers who oppose his plans.

“It is a sincere conviction among Republicans that the president’s negotiating posture isn’t about getting a deal done, it’s a zero-sum political game where his aim is to destroy the Republican [House] majority in the next election,” said Steve Schmidt, a Republican strategist who served in 2008 as Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign manager. “It’s certainly not an effective strategy for a leader in search of a deal.”

I know prominent Republicans who have been in meetings with Obama. After he spends 5 to 7 minutes delivering an arrogant, condescending lecture, he spends the rest of his time looking bored, napping, or playing with his Blackberry.

So better just to get his finger-wagging out of the way and move on with the rest of your day.

Seven Minutes? Yeah, that’s about right. I figure that is the time it would take to shake hands and for Obama to tell the GOP leadership how smart he is and how they need to do as their told.

Republican leaders’ ‘meeting’ with Obama: Seven minutes

Shouldn't "leaders" be in scare-quotes rather than "meeting"?

For his going away party, obama wants the House and Senate to belong to the demonrats, so he and they can do as they want and they will.

And that means winning the House and keeping the Senate in 2014.

Expect full scale, all out war against any and all republicans, especially in the public opinion theater of operations.

Divide, conquer and eliminate, and the progressive eGOP makes that job easy. With them in charge and reliably striking out at obama's T-ball pitches, we're always half way there.

Is seven minutes enough time to cave?

Has anyone on FR added up all the things that are supposedly getting cut by sequester budget cuts? I have seen articles about navy ships not getting fuel, National Science foundation grants, 200,000 military personnel, and teachers jobs. That is just off the top of my head and I haven’t been following this very closely (I figure in the end Boner will just cave).

It would be interesting to add up all the things that Obama and the Dims are claiming will go away with the actual $$ that is being cut from the budget. My guess is the claims of the press, Obama, and the Dims will be much higher than the actual budget cuts.

That really isn't enough time. I'd spend the first five minutes just flipping him off.

I am surprised he gave them seven whole minutes

He only did that so he could "check that box" off the list.
