Give Detroit to Mitt Romney
Slate ^ | Feb 28, 2013 | Davied Weigel

The reckoning has arrived in Detroit. Michigan has an aggressive emergency manager law that allows the government to take over failing cities rather than sending them into bankruptcy. [...]

[Mayor Dave] Bing wouldn’t directly reveal what the governor told him, but said the decision is what most have expected. He spoke in terms indicating that an emergency manager is indeed coming to Detroit.

Can I nominate someone?

I suspect a whole lot of city council members will be investigated by the FBI before this is done.

Rob Ford is working an awesome turnaround here in Toronto, mind you things didn’t get nearly as bad as Detroit or NYC. I guess the main difference between Toronto and Detroit is that most of our voters work and pay taxes.

Romney may not be a total Conservative but it would put a face at least on Republicans, Hard Work and the ****ing mess the DNC and all their allies made of the city and it would show it was not the DNC and their minions that fixed it.

Which is why it won't, and can't, be allowed to happen.

Given all of the parochial interests that will need to be engaged (unions, educrats, government bureaucrats) fighting to preserve their "stuff", it's going to be a hard enough job.

Put a high-visibility Republican into the position, making it not only a rescue mission but also an opportunity to enhance/rebuild the Republican brand (ESPECIALLY in the urban context) and there won't just be a bunch of special interests jockying around, there'll be ACTIVE confrontation and sabotage to deal with from EVERY Democrat-aligned organization/group out there.

And former councilors, if he’s allowed access to records back to the 50’s.

Seriously, who would want the grueling job of turning that city around? It would take decades and most of the populace and city employees would fight every step of the way.

The 3 tribes will have to be broken. Kilpatrick, Cockerell, and Conyers.

Detroit today and NYC at its worst during the 70’s are orders of magnitude apart. NYC was much, much, much, much, much better off.

I was thinking bulldozers, dump trucks and vast, new areas for agriculture.

Didn't he do the Olympics for no salary?

Of course. But you won't get anywhere with the bigots and Romney haters here. They would rather see Detroit crumble to dust than to see Romney turn it around, salvage a once great city, maybe even give honest governance and free market reforms some cred. It's the same over there... judging from the comments, FR has become identical to Slate.

The way to revitalize Detroit is to remove all of the urban liberals and to put them into stable, white collar elite liberal communities. Then, the blight can be razed and homes and businesses can be rebuilt so as to attract middle-class conservatives to a growing and safe community. As long as there is concentrated liberalism and unanimous democrat voting, Detroit will remain violent and sterile. Nothing will grow but the violence.

Of course the new inhabitants of the elite communities will find their neighborhoods will remain pristine and secure . . . their new friends will be courteous and helpful . . . and their property values will remain elevated.

Or probably not.

I had a boss tell me one time that a plan without resources isn’t a plan....it’s a fairy tale. It’s going to take resources to turn Detroit around. Where are those resources going to come from? Detroit? They’d have already turned it around. Rural Michigan? Were they the ones who overspent? Georgia? Why should anyone else pay for Detroit? There wasn’t a hurricane or earthquake. The people of Detroit brought this on themselves. They need to get themselves out of it.

Come on people! How many times do i have to inform you! Mitt could do the job from the WH! Since the people didn’t think so it’s tough titty to Detroit. Mitt shouldn’t waste his time. It’s not like he has to prove himself again.
