As sequestration nears, federal workers brace for furloughs, vent anger at politicians

WASHINGTON — As a single dad with seven kids living at home, Bill Blevins is used to pinching every penny.

The 48-year-old building engineer at the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing hasn’t had a cost-of-living pay raise in more than two years, even as his rent and insurance premiums went up. Now he and other federal workers in Washington and across the country are bracing for possible unpaid furloughs as part of an $85 billion reduction in federal spending. Known as sequestration, the automatic, across-the-board budget cuts are scheduled to kick in unless Congress and the White House can reach a compromise by Friday.

“I am a registered Republican. However, I blame the Republican Party for this,” said Gregory Russell, a 48-year-old federal firefighter at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Russell calculates he’d lose about $1,200 a month – about 20 percent of his pay – if he gets furloughed. . .

Firefighter Gregory Russell (mentioned above) claims to be a "registered Republican" yet in 2008 he gave $500 to Democratic candidates including $250 to Obama. He also donated more than $1,200 in 2008 to his union's PAC. Some Republican.

This guy has been breathing too much smoke inhalation. If he is a Republican(which I seriously doubt), then he’s a moron for not blaming Obama since he proposed the sequester.

I have one comment for these poor Guvm’nt workers, Welcome to the world the rest of us live in! Costs going up! No wage increase! Oh No! At least these A-holes have a job, what about the hundreds of thousands of Americans driven out of work by our Supreme Moron? What are they supposed to do? Oh wait that’s right I forgot, Madam Puulosee says that unemployment checks are the best way to kick start the economy. I wish someone would kick start all these career politicians the hell out of office and into the unemployment lines so they could help instead of F-ing up the country.

Marxist propagandist McClatchy stock down from $75 bucks a share in 2005 to right about $2.50 today.

No doubt they expect the communists running DC to steal more of our cash and give them some to keep them out of bankruptcy.

Pathetic.

My heart bleeds for them...

I do have a question though. If every department of every agency is making draconian cuts we're going to end up cutting WAY more than the $85 billion sequestered. Each agency acts like they have to come up with the entire amount on their own without notifying the Secretary or pResident. Once all the crying is over this might just work out fine.

Good comment from the article:

I have NO sympathy for "single dad with seven kids living at home", Federal worker Bill Blevins who "hasn’t had a cost-of-living pay raise in more than two years". What Bill DOESN'T tell you is that before that, in 2009, when millions of Americans lost their jobs, he got a 10% salary INCREASE from Obama - which he has not lost a dime from since. A pay increase that is being paid by CHINA - since it went straight into Obama's $7 trillion personal increase to the national debt. So BOO FREAKIN' HOO, Billy boy. Go cry somewhere else.

Yeah, that’s what my parents escaped from Europe to get away from, and now my Mother is so disgusted with our government she says maybe it would be better if they had stayed.

The House has passed a budget every year since 2010.

Obama has proposed a budget every year since elected. The House voted his budget down with zero approving votes from either party.

The Senate has not proposed a budget under Harry Reid. 5 years or something.

Let me get this straight, We are paying a fire fighter at the U.S. Naval Academy $72,000 per year PLUS Benefits. OK. When was the last time he fought a fire he didn’t have a hand in starting?

I think we could possibly allow the Annapolis Fire Department handle the campus if their is a fire. How about we simply close that department all together.

Federal employees are blaming the Republicans. So what! 99% of them vote for the Dems in every election anyway.

It’s long overdue for the Mandarin class to pony up their share of Obama’s “shared sacrifice.”

Let them blame republicans!

I know I blame republican office holders for a bunch of failures.

Glad the liberals can now partake of the offerings.

That was a pretty jaw dropping stat for me too. A $1,200 a month pay decrease represented a loss of 20% of his income? He's making $6K a month for being a firefighter?!

He still has a job, has free health care for him and his entire family, and he's still making $4,800 a month?

What planet do these government employees live on? Maybe they should talk to their friends in the private sector to get an idea of what REAL economic misery looks like under Obama.

Government employees are like a cargo cult.

“U.S. Naval Academy”

From the old documentaries I recall that EVERY sailor was also a firefighter. Seems to me they could have their own crew with weekly/daily drills, etc.

Oh, no!

The poor government workers busily sucking away at the public teat will have to share in the pain their employers have created.

Oh, the huge manatee.
