Gov. Rick Snyder of Michigan announced on Friday that the city of Detroit is so snarled in financial woes that the state must appoint an emergency manager to lead it out of disaster.
There is probably no city that is more financially challenged in the entire United States. If you look at the quality of services for citizens its ranked among the worst. So we went from the top to the bottom over the last 50 or 60 years, Mr. Snyder told Detroiters in a town-hall-style meeting that was broadcast live on local television stations across the city.

This is not going to be pretty, Scotty to Jim "she is dead".
Having watched Snyder for a while, I would expect a round of FBI investigations of city officials.
As much as I want to kick his butt about half the time, he don’t play checkers.
The Democrats did to Detroit what Hitler could not do.
I might get flamed for this but I’m kinda torn.
One way or another, the city is doomed. The only way to get rid of the short and long term debt is to A) Immediately stop paying (or reduce payments) of current and future pensions or B) Wait for people to die.
A state taking over one of its cities and dismissing elected officials? Hmmm. I’m thinking constitution here. Does the Federal Constitution apply to individuals with regards to the actions of the sovereign state upon it’s constituents? As long as people keep voting in Detroit, it will never have a chance. I have no doubt about that.
There really are only two solutions. Void the voting public, take it over and slice out some payouts. Or wall it off and burn it to the ground.
By wall it off and burn it down I mean to cut the city off from all state funding and let it default on its obligations. It will have to claim bankruptcy and the pensions will be gone anyway. There will be riots as employees and retirees don’t get checks (including policemen and firemen). The city will burn, people will flee, and the city can start over.
Fortunately there is precedence, as this is how New York was saved in the 70’s. I don’t think cities have the same constitutional protections as individuals, or else Walker could not do this.
Yes, guess that would happen. But how long before the city is vacant from starvation if the funds were cut off?
Hopefully, they'll free to S**tcago.
Happy about an emergency manager. They need to watch out that Dearbornistan doesn’t sneak in and buy up what’s for sale to expand their hold in Michigan.
You mean flee, I'm sure.
Two thoughts on that. They would have to travel through IN and I'm afraid of how many might get lost looking for Chicago. I would fully expect the City of Brotherly Love would not want refugees. They can't feed or protect their own voters.
(PS - I'm a Hoosier)
It should be this way anyway.
How much power does the “Fiscal Manager” really have? Can he remake the city into a free market bastion?
As I recall the situation in New York, any dollars that weren’t spoken for, in terms of basic city services, had to go through his office, including city salaries.
The people who get their food money from government would have to go elsewhere or starve. The people with private-sector paychecks (yes there are a few left in Detroit) would not starve. Eventually only the non-moochers would be left in the Detroit area, and recovery could begin. Detroit's demographics would change radically, but them's the breaks.
free market bastion?
Not without evicting 75% of the residents.
General William Hull had the right idea.
THE LAW OF EFFECT - You will generally receive more of the behavior that you reward and less of the behavior that is punished.
Behavior- Vote stupidly for people who use the public treasury to fund themselves.
Punishment or Reward? - Use money from other taxpayers to bail out the voters in Detroit. The Detroit voters will continue to vote.
Will we have more, or fewer, Detroits? They are being rewarded, so we will see more cities doing this.
1. Show pictures of Detroit in 1945 with some stats.
2. Show pictures of Hiroshima in 1945 after the bomb.
3. Show pictures of Detroit today, noting years of Democrat control.
4. Show pictures of Hiroshima today.
Democrat policies destroy cities.
It looks like MI has a new law that’s much tougher, but I can’t find the particulars. If you run into them, ping me please.
Detroit has a well-functioning black market. It would be easy to make into a free market bastion by legalizing what is now illegal activity.
