MacDill Cancels Airfest
Tampa Bay Times (St. Petersburg Times) ^ | March 1, 2013 | William R. Levesque

Posted on 03/02/2013 1:24:03 PM PST by Iron Munro

TAMPA — MacDill Air Force Base officials announced Friday they have canceled the Airfest scheduled for April 6 and 7 because of forced budget cuts.

"We waited until the very last minute kind of hoping for a breakthrough," said Terry Montrose, a spokesman for the 6th Air Mobility Wing. "We just came up against some unfortunate circumstances that won't allow it to happen."

Montrose said even a budget breakthrough in the next few days would be unlikely to save the Airfest, given the months of planning required.

"I don't see how we could turn it back on," he said.

The Airfest draws more than 80,000 people and would have featured the Navy's demonstration flying team, the Blue Angels.

Maybe they will cancel some of their schmooze fest parties with officers and Lebanese women who like to exchange emails with Generals in Afghanistan.

BS. The show is April 6 ... about four weeks away. Planning should be 98% complete by now.

Fighter jets burn through fuel at an exorbitant cost. I have the solution.. CHARGE ADMISSION. People WILL pay to go to an airshow. They are hardcore fans and usually repeat customers (This also keeps the riffraff out). Charge admission, with funds covering fuel costs. Done.

Indeed. They act like they're planning this from scratch, rather than an annual event.

Dust off the 2012 plan (which I'm guessing bears shocking similarities to the 2011 and 2010 plans), and have folks on standby in the event the funding gets turned back on.

Honestly, I couldn't give a fig if the show is held or not, and certainly the DOD budget, like every component of the fedgov, can handle some substantive cuts, but this is just more of the apocalyptic gnashing of teeth...

And in the meantime, BO will receive a pay check and free airfare back and forth across the county for both he and Michelle and all the Congressmen will continue to receive their salary and benefits without interruption. And the golfing outings will still continue.

I agree, charge a fee. People who were planning to come will find a way to be there. I would suspect the show of support would be astounding.

MacDill Cancels Airfest

Meanwhile, Obama will jet to a bunch of states to read a few speeches about how the budget cuts have hurt the Airfest and a few other shows. Air Force One and it's backup, and the cost to support their flights, will have cost more than what the Airfest and other shows would have. Obama is a hypocrite and a liar and a destructive force.

Airshows can easily get tens of thousands of people showing up. Most people would have no problem paying a small entry fee to offset some of the costs.

And the fraud and waste in Food Stamps, Welfare, Medicaid, etc. will continue.

How about cutting the 40 million Americans on Food stamps back by $5/week, that would save $9.6 billion a year. Do the same for welfare and save billions more.

Cut 5% of federal jobs, problem solved for the immediate moment.

good, If govt can not cover the cost of an air show we should not be wasting taxpayer money at this time.

Honestly? This is a good cut. How much time is wasted putting these shows together. I like an airshow as much as the next guy, but when times are tough...it should be the first to go.

There's stuff up the wazoo they could cancel without calling attention to themselves. Guess the Generals are 'good Democrats' and love a BIG public pity party. Nothing is creepier...

I’ve attended many airshows. They could easily recoup fuel costs by charging a fee for attendance, as airshows are almost always free. Canceling the airshow is like releasing illegal aliens.. Just a “look what the Republicans did to you”, punitive action especially since lots of airshow attendees AND PARTICIPANTS are pro-military conservatives.

As nice as the airshows are, taxpayers shouldn’t be footing the bill for them. I don’t know how much it costs to put on one of these shows, but if this is one of the results of the budget cuts, we can live without them.

How about grounding all government airplanes, excepting the military. That would save a lot of money.

I've been to several air shows over the years, in fact, as recently as last September. The largest I've attended, going back about ten years, was the Dayton Air Show. Anyway, my point is they all charge an admission fee, or at least that's been my experience.

The Cleveland Air Show fee is $19/adult and $12/children. It is an excellent show and is very well attended. I have gone to quite a few air shows over the years around the country. None has been free.

Let them watch “THE RED BARON” on cable

It is a 2008 German film directed by Nikolai Müllerschön about the World War I fighter pilot Manfred von Richthofen.

It was filmed in the Czech Republic and is an excellent action movie I saw (again) just a few days ago that depicts the changing thoughts and the rapid aging of some young men.

I would say the same could follow for some German pilots towards the end of WWII - but not the Japanese pilots.

- But then - what do I know?

I live in the 19th century.

Doesn’t the military already have its 2013 budget?

I sense this is theatrics.

Yeah, that’s why I said that about the Navy fliers, and some didn’t catch my humor, but I let it go. As an older FReeper, I’m just giving everyone a wider birth. The Navy guys should understand that one.

U.S. Releases $250 Million in Aid to Egypt After John Kerry’s Meeting With President Morsi

Egypt is trying to meet conditions to close on a $4.8 billion loan package from the International Monetary Fund. An agreement would unlock more of the $1 billion in U.S. assistance promised by President Barack Obama last year and set to begin flowing with Kerry’s announcement.

Sequestration? What sequestration?
