Hundreds of thousands march against austerity in Portugal

AFP - Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Lisbon and other Portuguese cities Saturday to protest against the government's austerity measures aimed at rescuing the debt-hit eurozone nation.

The rallies were organised by a non-political movement which claimed 500,000 marched in the country's capital and another 400,000 in the main northern city of Porto. There have been no official estimates of the crowds.

But the mood of the crowd was clearly political, calling for new elections with banners declaring "Portugal to the polls!" and "If you fall asleep in a democracy, you wake up in a dictatorship".

Another banner showed a picture of centre-right Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho with the caption: "Today I am in the street, tomorrow it will be you."

Portugal was granted a financial rescue package worth 78 billion euros ($103 billion) in May 2011, in exchange for a pledge to straighten out its finances via austerity measures and economic reforms.

Even if they knew that their free stuff came from the backs of other people, they wouldn’t care. The entitlement mantality is rampant.

That's a good point. In the end they're really no different than the Democrat party's base of moochers here in America.

Rich well managed economies bailing out weak poorly managed ecnonomies, with quid pro quo to “get your shite in order.”

Ungrateful Portugal gives finger to Germans, says for the Germans to work more weeks per year, work to an older age than the Portuguese.

Like in the US where civilians will work forever, so government employees can retire at 50 with full pay, platinum health care, etc.

At the end of the day, it ain’t good.

If only I had the foresight to go down there and laugh at them as they picketed.

They should spend their way to prosperity, like us.

My sister’s all for “free healthcare.”

I’m exasperated.

It’s going to take a complete collapse to reboot the system, whether or not people learn from it.

Yep. Like a hopeless alcoholic, America needs to wake up one afternoon in a dumpster, covered in it's own vomit, urine, and feces before the road to recovery can begin. The sooner America hits bottom, the sooner a new nation can be built. In that way, the African communist Ubama is the perfect captain of this Titanic. That simple p.o.s. is trying to hit every iceberg he can find. If anybody can finish off the once-proud America, it's that guy.

Like they say, "You can choose your friends but you can't choose your relatives." I've got a couple of simpletons in my family, too, believe me.

Flowers Foods, which bid $360 million for the Hostess bread brands, made it clear that it won’t honor any previous pension plans or collective bargaining agreements.

These 50 IQ morons in the baker’s union really believe that they can move the union into the new owner’s buildings and operate as before. Reality is about to bite these union guys in the butt.

Correct, they have not one but several socialist parties, as if one isn’t enough.
