But along with many who stood in the cold waiting their turn, he was skeptical that the program would get guns out of the hands of criminals.
This is a little bit of a farce, he said, as he pointed out that all of the dozen or so people in line were older, including two men who were wearing retired Navy caps.
Look at us, he said. Theres not a criminal here. Were all nice guys turning in guns we dont want.
Barry Weiner, the head of the citys Water & Water Pollution Control Authority, was there to turn in a .22-caliber handgun he once used for target shooting. He agreed that the program seems more like a feel-good notion than an effective way to battle crime.
This is foolish, he said. Nobody here will do anything illegal with these guns. The people who need to get rid of their guns arent going to bring them here.
Another man, a gun collector from Baltic who did not want to give his name, brought an AK-47 rifle he had purchased legally in 1993, a year before the ban on assault-style weapons. He said he was turning it in because he did not want to be a criminal.
I did all the paperwork ... I was approved by the state police ... but now its illegal for me to own it, he said.
The weapon is worth about $2,000, he said, but he has no legal way of selling it. Another gun owner standing near him joked that he would give him a trip to Hawaii for the gun.
The Baltic man said he would take the gift card and buy more guns.

They are complete morons. Whatever red state I eventually move to, they better not follow me there
Thing is some people are turning guns worth hundreds of dollars.
-— I still live in Ct, but not for much longer.
Your description of Cts steep decline is depressingly true. ——
I have a liberal relative who moved to a pretty rough part of New Britain. On purpose.
You can’t fix stupid.
Ding, ding, ding - we have a thread winnah!
Yea, won something. Finally!
I know. It is a horrible thing. I am proud of those folks who work around the cops to rescue the good guns.
I was just pointing out that some guns ARE crap and if you can make a few bucks off the Hoplophobes with ‘em it is a good thing!
It has been stated by high government officials as fact: You have a right to be stupid!
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Yep, you have a right to stumble and fall off the “mile high swinging bridge” at Grandfather Mountain, you also have the right to go splat at the bottom. The high government officials never seem to explain to the dingalings that you don’t have the right to avoid the consequences of your stupidity.
“...a state once so famous across the nation for production of quality firearms that won the West.”

Oh, yes, back in the sixties people who ran small machine shops in the South were waiting many months for a chance to by a “Bridgeport”, a small milling machine that every shop wanted. I worked in the engineering office of a bearing factory that depended mainly on talent imported from Connecticut to keep things running. What happened?
On the bright side, New Britain has a lovely (and cheap) municipal golf course: Stanley. The carts have GPS even.
The Connecticut Concentration Camp.
A quaranteen zone for the useful idiots.
