Demographic research on lesbians and gays emerges from shadows
Washington Post ^ | March 1, 2013 | Carol Morello

A few salient facts are known about the Americans whose lives might be changed by a Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage expected this summer.

About one in five gay and lesbian couples are raising children that are under age 18. Same-sex couples are less likely than traditional married couples to have health insurance covering them both. One in 10 men with a male partner or spouse is a military veteran. As many as 6 million Americans, roughly 2 percent of the population, have a parent who is lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

These nuggets of demographic insight into same-sex couples were contained in an amicus brief filed last week in connection with two cases before the Supreme Court on the constitutionality of California’s gay marriage ban and the Defense of Marriage Act...

--snip--

Some of the controversy is rooted in a study done in the late 1940s. Sexologist Alfred Kinsey wrote in a passing reference that 10 percent of men had had same-sex experiences. That figure has stuck, in part, according to Gates, because gay activists cited it to make the case they could not be ignored.

Some opponents of gay marriage also say more research should be done into gay demographics, in part to correct common misperceptions on the size of the gay community. In several surveys, Gallup has found that Americans believe, on average, that 25 percent of the population is gay, several times higher than any research estimate.

“I think serious data on this is important to inform the debate,” said Peter Sprigg, a senior fellow at the Family Research Council, which has argued that same-sex marriage is harmful to society. “People have an exaggerated view of how many homosexuals there are in the population. They don’t realize what a relatively small population it is.”...

A lot of the so called LGBT research will be getting exposed as BS, IMHO.

Just for the record, is there any documentation that “divorced gays” in the states that have gay marriage are actually paying child support or alimony? Also are the courts awarding estates to the surviving “spouse” against the claims of biological relations when a will is not explicit?

Every court in the land can say what they want about about gays, I don’t care. I will never accept it as normal or acceptable. And they can’t make me.

20% are raising kids....BS

These are people with other problems and I also believe...unusually selfish.

Tell me the suicide rate.

Tell me how many partners they have had.

Tell me how many houses with the white picket fence they own.

Tell me their life is REALLY like the lives of man/woman lives. BS

"Gathering data about gay people is much more complex than asking about race or income. Should people be asked about their sexual attractions, behavior or identity? Which of the many synonyms for gays should be used?"

Gosh, how can these brain-teasers be solved?

Why wouldn’t your average sheeple believe the population is 25% homosexual. Every tv show has at least one queer character who is wealthy, healthy, and all around good. When you have a population that opiates its sad existance with copious amounts of television, it is easy to tell “the big lie.”

If I can remember a conversation with a Sociology professor friend of mine, the average life span of a gay male was 63 years of age; even excluding those who died of AIDES. The suicide rate is 3 times higher and the number of sexual partners per year was over 20. Lesbians had an average life span but a slightly higher suicide rate. Lesbians also tended to have very few sexual partners.

science doesn’t always find everything that fits a particular political agenda

In the early 90's, a French survey found 2 % homosexual orientation as a long-lasting trait. This was at a time homosexual activists in the US were pushing beyond 10% to 15 % as the prevalence. I assumed that 2 % figure was correct, as I assumed the French culture didn't include a supposedly punishing and politically powerful "religious right" that would suppress honest responses. Now the science that is supposed to be so convincing to the public that believes 25% are homosexual is "they are born that way." The "science" evidence that so many accept is summarized,"who would be that way if they had a choice ?"

I can believe the 20% number. If half of all homosexuals are female and half of those have a biological child, that’s 25%.

The 1940 studies that found such a high percent gay were looking at prison population and said that the general population was the same.

I read somewhere that the number of male homosexuals far outnumbers the lesbians.
which if it is true is odd.

I have 5 kids the youngest daughter, 26, is gay.
She is a hard working, kind, brilliant, creative and a highly successful person in our society.

She is loved deeply by all in our family as they know she does not want to be gay, has had a couple of relationships with men that lasted a couple years each, nice young men who treated her as she deserved knowing she is a gentle soul. They both still love her and she cares for them.

She and I are very close. No matter how much she wants to be normal, a man does not attract her in the same way physically that a women does. She hates it, wants to be able to have kids in a normal environment, knows this will be impossible.

I have been a Freeper for years and know I will get hammered for saying I believe that some are born the way they are, with an attraction that is not as simple as it is for you or even me for that matter. I love a woman and a woman’s body above all.
Men don’t attract me - it is that simple.

My youngest has now become interested in the possibility that there is a God and how he manifests himself in this world. I pray she will find peace with herself through him.

She participates in NO pro gay agenda and puts all her energy into loving her family and working hard.

Unlike most people, she is unusually deaf to gossip, heavy handed opinions, hatreds, bigotry, swearing or other things negative.

Please don’t hate my kid.

I don’t hate your kid. I wonder if you have prayed for your child and brought her up to know Jesus?

Why not try that?

Maybe you missed this line.

We have always prayed for all of our children and yours.

Any prayers from you would be appreciated
