EDITORIAL: Why I Favor a Complete Ban on ‘Aquatic Deathtraps’ aka Swimming Pools

Our fearless leader in the White House, President Barack Hussein Obama believes we must do everything in our power to save lives, even if it involves stripping law-abiding citizens of their private property or infringing upon their constitutionally guaranteed rights.

In a gun-control stump speech in Minnesota last month, the president explained why we must be prepared to give up our freedom to save lives.

“No law or set of laws can keep our children completely safe. But if there’s even one thing we can do, if there’s just one life we can save, we’ve got an obligation to try.”

As the founding member of a nonexistent public safety organization called the Citizens Commission to Save Lives, I wholeheartedly agree with the president. It’s time we start saving lives, by any means necessary.

To that end, every year about 3,500 people drown unintentionally in non-boating related incidents, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That equates to about ten deaths per day of which two are children under the age of 14. Looking at the aggregate picture, drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury death in the U.S.

The Citizens Commission to Save Lives is actively seeking new members. Our motto is simple: “Save lives, by any means necessary.” Our central objective is to save lives by getting the government to ban potentially dangerous inanimate objects (baseball bats, hammers, rope over four feet in length, high-speed scooters, etc.)

Since people use their hands to choke other people to death; shall our ‘do anything to prevent’ folks push forward legislation that all new born children will have their hand amputated before being released from the hospital. and perhaps follow up legislation requiring the amputation of anyone with hands convicted of any crime, misdemeanor or traffic violation.

And without hands, hand gun crime would end.

I recall a similar article about 10 or so years ago.

It is amazing how many sober adults die in said pool.
It is understandable that many (not) sober adults die in said pool.
It is not at all amazing how many children drown but what is completely (Special Emphasis) are how many men, women, children and dogs die in a completely empty pool.

The strange thing is that cat deaths are never mentioned.

I am concerned with deaths resulting from falls down stairs. I think all stairs should be banned.

Private pools are a luxury for the 1%. The rich unfairly use more than their fair share of our scarce water. It's not like it, you know, falls from the sky or something. And then they have the nerve to poison the water with chlorine!

It's time to OccupyPool!

Just watched Hitchcock's film Frenzy last night. The serial killer was known as the necktie murderer.

After watching this film, I must propose that we ban neckties immediately.

And then scary Hitchcock movies...

Why don't you call yourselves “The Citizens Afraid of Life’’? For cryin’ out loud if you don't want a swimming pool, don't buy why one. Why do you feel it's your mission to decide for everyone else? I'm 56 years old and my generation grew up playing ‘’Cowboys and Indians’’, Dodge Ball, riding big Schwinn bicycles without helmets and eating breakfast cereal loaded with sugar and we're still here. For Gods sake we're raising a nation of pansies!

He is exactly correct.

An excellent and well-known way to test one’s own bias, or to test bias in others, is to either substitute or reverse the key term of the argument and see how it plays. We see this occasionally on “man in the street” interviews before elections.

I especially can’t believe we allow people to have even more deadly ADTs: boats.

At least in a pool, even a poor swimmer stands a chance of reaching safety. But even a good swimmer 5 miles offshore after falling off a boat may not survive.

And to make it worse, we allow adults to take children into such dangerous situations.

If we can just save ONE life by banning pools deeper than one inch and banning the use of boats completely, it is worth it. /s

You will be happy to know that Mayor Bloomberg has joined the cause by banning all pools and boats in NYC and is calling for a statewide ban. /s

1) Nobody needs a pool with a capacity of more than 1,000 gallons. Your community pool is staffed with lifeguards who have received special training for emergencies. Do not take matters into your own hands. Close the Slip-and-Slide loophole.
