Tweets on Elaine Chao: 'They will not get away with attacking my wife,' Mitch McConnell says

WINCHESTER, Ky. -- Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell lambasted a liberal group on Saturday for criticizing the Asian heritage of his wife, former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, calling its Twitter messages "racial slurs" and "the ultimate outrage."

"They will not get away with attacking my wife in this campaign," McConnell told about 100 home-state supporters at a Republican dinner in Winchester.

"This woman has the ear of @McConnellPress — she's his #wife," the group Kentucky Progress tweeted on Feb. 14. "May explain why your job moved to #China!"

McConnell forcefully defended Chao, who was born in Taiwan and who moved to the U.S. as an 8-year-old with her family aboard a freight ship."Elaine Chao is just as much an American as any of the rest of them," McConnell said. "In fact, she had to go through a lot more to become an American."

McConnell's aides had already criticized the tweets.

"Secretary Chao and her family are shining examples of the American dream: salt-of-the-earth folks who escaped oppression, came here with nothing, joined our great melting pot, worked exceptionally hard to build a thriving business, and then dedicated so much of their lives to giving back," said Jesse Benton, manager of McConnell's re-election campaign. "It is unconscionable that anyone would use blatant race-baiting for political gain."

Progress Kentucky removed the offending comments from Twitter after Louisville public radio station WFPL-FM aired reports about them. And the group issued two apologies over the past week for what they described as "inappropriate tweets sent by our organization."

Hey Mitch...they’ll get away with attacking whoever, however, whenever they want. Collectives of criminals will even steal our money. House of “representatives”?

Yet McConnell pushes for more lucrative trade relations with China. He and Chao meet privately with Chinese officials, including Jiang Zemin in 1997, then general secretary of the Communist Party of China. (Chao’s father and Jiang were schoolmates in China.)

'They will not get away with attacking my wife,'-Sen. McConnell

My ears are still ringing from him screaming RACISM! more than ten years ago. There were lots of questions which were drowned out by the screaming. Including questions about the details of him arranging for the U. of Louisville getting special relations with Red China.

On matters like that I'll take the Curious-Journal over a Republican senator.

Attacking his wife or RACIALLY attacking the Asian race of his wife? Does he know the difference?

Liberal racism has to be countered directly. She’s a darkie, off the communist reservation and Asians need to see the liberal race hate game clearly. The majority of Asians who voted for the commie are uninformed, not stupid.

Hey staytrue. You sound a little negative, I’d like to disagree with you. I really respect Americans of Chinese descent and empathize very strongly with the reverse discrimination they suffer in education. I’ve had so many Chinese-American coworkers that have been great teammates and friends.

Don’t confuse fear of the nation of China and how it has distorted our market with animosity to our fellow citizens. Nor hostility of Blacks, who are scoring pretty high on the hostility to everybody scale these days.

This totally has confounded me. Asians voted for Obama at over 70%! WTF?

Oh, I've heard that they don't like Bible-thumpers. But they as a group have NOTHING in common with what Obama represents.

These are hard working people who go from poverty to making it in america in ONE generation. Not multiple generations, like the Jews of the early 1900s.

I cannot believe they enjoy watching their hard earned money being vacuumed up by taxes, the incredible waste of tax dollars, the discrimination they face from inner-city Black-Americans (not to mention the violence they suffer from the same group), and the pushing of gay marriage.

In fact the Chinese are rather down on homosexuality in general.

What about Obama (and democrats) appeals to Asians at all?

I agree with you, it’s literally unimaginable.

But I would bet you real money that the effect is engineered by having a few dedicated liberal Chinese “community organizers” infiltrate the Chinese communities and very scientifically disinform them to vote en bloc Dem/Lib despite any apparent analysis an outsider might conduct. That is because >>their votes<< are being targeted, not their sentiments, not their aspirations. At the risk of overgeneralizing, urban Chinese are probably targeted based upon their intense care for family and their understanding that they are rather dependent upon their homogeneous communities. They are also not independent thinkers at that stage of their lives. Now a Chinese PHd working at TRW or some biotech co earning 6 figures and living in the suburbs? I can’t say how I’d think they would vote. But I doubt they are scientifically targetable as are urban recent Chinese immigrants.
