JACKSON, Miss. Doctors at the University of Mississippi Medical Center said they have cured a baby suffering from HIV and the breakthrough is reverberating worldwide. Related
Woman says ex kidnapped her 18-wheeler overturns off of I-20 3 arrested in Jackson drug bust Grenade launcher found during drug bust Fire hydrant testing begins in West...
"There is excitement around this," said Dr. Deborah Persaud of John's Hopkins Children's Center.
Doctors across the country are heralding the medical breakthrough in Jackson.
"We have, perhaps inadvertently, but in fact, cured the child," said Dr. Hannah Gay, associate professor of pediatrics. "We don't know yet what to expect with this patient because she's the first of her kind."
The hospital will not share many details about the 2-and-a-half-year-old who was born HIV positive, saying only the child is from the Mississippi area and was born to a woman with HIV.

I’d like to confirm this report with someone that’s straight. Hannah, obviously, has her own agenda.

The good news is they can cure AIDS. The bad news is each treatment requires an 18 wheeler be overturned with a grenade launcher.

There is a European man theoretically cured of HIV. He had HIV, had leukemia, they picked a bone marrow donor who had 2 copies of the Delta-32 gene that makes someone immune to HIV. Man in theory is cured.

Only, and only in Mississippi! But, no matter how crazy they report the news, it is still something newsworthy.
Dr. Hannah Gay is a pediatric physician in Jackson, MS and has been working with an infant infected with HIV at birth. Apparently the HIV is no longer detectable in the infant at present. So, great news all around. The truck, the grenade and all others are the result of the good ole boys celebrating over this story. Thats the way it plays down here.

Its a shame the thread became an embarrassment due to other posters.
To: grandpa jones
So she tracks the infant down because they find out that she hasn’t been getting her medicine. Then they find out that she doesn’t have HIV?
Probably didn’t have it in the first place, or the tests got messed up and the child didn’t have it to begin with.
They are saying the child was cured, but they didn’t do anything.
Either a miracle, or Dr. Gay isn’t a very good doctor.

Either a miracle, or Dr. Gay isnt a very good doctor. I'm sure the pediatrician's skills are fine.
The problem with testing is that there is a lower limit of detection, no matter what kind of test is used. A person can have AIDS, but the tests won't detect it because the specific types of cells targeted by the HIV virus have been killed off, and the quantity of virus in other tissues is too low to be detected.
I will need to read the original research articles to see what is really going on here. I know that (if I were doing the diagnosis) I'd want to show that there is no detectable virus, and that the child has a healthy population of the cells normally killed by HIV.

Doctors say infant cured of HIV
In a TV news report this morning, it was said that the virus was still in her blood system, but in such small numbers, it wasn't detectable by normal tests.
So rather than being cured, perhaps "in remission" might be a better description.
