Northrop Grumman Corp. said Monday that it will move 850 jobs off Long Island by next year, leaving just 550 workers out of a workforce that exceeded 25,000 in the 1980s.

The jobs are going to Florida and California in the latest cost-saving consolidation of functions by the aerospace company. It's acting in the face of steadily declining Pentagon budgets, including those in the current automatic spending cuts known as the sequestration.

An unknown number of the 850 workers will be offered transfers, company spokesman Randy Belote said. The consolidation is expected to be completed sometime next year.

I live in NE Fla. just saw on the news this am that Grumman will be adding 1000 positions at the St. Augustine site, so this must be those.

I agree though, Cali? damned if i would move a company there.

They should be going to Texas, not squishy Florida or commie California.

Northrup Grumman gets a lot of kickbacks from the taxpayers of California and they recently moved their headquarters from California to Virginia. I am sure throwing them a few of these types of jobs now and then is some kind of condition for continuing getting kickbacks. There is probably some cash exchanging hands as well.

Re New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democrat, said through a spokeswoman, “I am very frustrated that the company has made a decision to move jobs out of New York. I believe that Long Island has the workforce, academic and research assets, and local support that would have allowed Northrop Grumman to grow centers of excellence right here in Bethpage.”

there ya go.

It has all those things but it also has an economic environment that dissuades business activity

I was a customer of a company near Northrup Grumman on Long Island.

It moved to the Orlando area in Florida. The employees were all offered their jobs in Florida. I visited the relocated company and discovered that nearly all the people followed the companies to the greener Florida pastures.

I just love thes anti-military democrats. They despise the military until they feel the bite of the bases and production facilities leave their states.Rhen they squeal and moan as if someone broke into their personal Bank account.

I hope all of these military industries move out of the Norrheast to friendlier and cheaper areas.Just maybe we can get more bang for our bucks.

I liked LI in the early 80s and even 90s but it is way too crowded with too limited access points.
Last time I had to go there for work I flew into Islip airport and rented a car. But driving to there is a nightmare as you must go through part of NYC then out the LIE.

Florida I understand, but California?

It makes a lot of sense given the R&D centered on Edwards AFB, Plant 42 in Palmdale, China Lake and other government/military facilities in the area.

I remember watching the A-6s and A-10s take off from the facility on test runs or when they were deployed from my aunt’s backyard in the early 80s.

The Grumman facility was tremendous but after Northrop took them over they let a lot of it rust until most of it was sold off.

LI is slowly dying despite being over populated and over taxed. If it weren’t for NYC, it would be worse. This is just another nail.
