Second World War Desert Rats describe their disgust and sadness after it emerges that the celebrated tank unit would be left without any tanks as a result of the latest round of defense cuts.

Major Sam Bradshaw, who fought with the 7th Armoured Brigade throughout the conflict, including its famous campaign in north Africa, said he would like to wring David Cameron’s neck. …

He added: “They are just cutting back, cutting back, cutting back. You can’t put a price on defense. I won’t live to regret it, but my thoughts are with the people of the future. I hope they don’t have to go through what we went through.” …

They need to eliminate equipment for their troops so they can afford weapon giveaways to the head-chopping islamists in Syria

So sadly true. This veteran comes from a different era, however. I expect the next waves of civil unrest to be closer to urban jungle warfare, where a bat, brick or kitchen utensil will serve just as well. Our countries seem to think only ICBM’S, tanks and missiles are deadly, while completely ignoring immigration and culture clash.

Yeah, well - they’ll probably send all their Challengers over to Assad. Or Ahmadinejad.

They will just sit back and expect us to defend them.

“They need to eliminate equipment for their troops so they can afford weapon giveaways to the head-chopping islamists in Syria”.

British single payer health care ate all the money.

There was a time during Clinton’s years when our tankers had to pretend they were in tanks during training exercises because there was no money to use real tanks ...

We aren’t far behind with only 12% or so of the Budget remaining now ... in a decade or so the entire Federal Budget will go for entitlements ... nothing left for any military at all. Then we will be totally disarmed and no threat to anyone else ever again. Barry will be happy his plan worked.

Welcome to FR.

Remember, when you post on this forum, there are over 350,000 FReepers, many in other countries. Some of those other countries are still our allies [for how long I don't know].

Hope you enjoy the forum.

That was true in the Carter years but I’d be surprised if the Clinton years were that way because the Republicans controlled Congress,

I don't know much about tanks but here's a good year to year comparison of force strength:

US Ship Force Levels

In 1987 we had 594 active ships in the Navy (high mark).
In 1992 we had 471 active ships in the Navy (Clinton takes office).
In 2000 we had 318 active ships in the Navy.

In 1987, we were still in the Cold War and needed more transports and escort ships for the Atlantic Crossing. By 1992(Bush was President in 1992, Clinton took office in Jan 1993), that had shifted.

I picked the date closest to the inauguration (9/30/92).

Then it will also come as a surprise that under Clinton there was a wholesale resignation of generals as well as removal of ICBM targeting cards to ‘safe’ locations ... Then there was the Kosovo fiasco and Gen. Clarke, aka the Butcher of Belgrade.

Congressional Republicans are just more of the political elite class and only power and reelection matter in the end. Gingrich was not your friend.

Thanks for the support lads.

I am embarrassed that I lost my temper and used such language. I am not usually someone who uses quite so trong language.

Apologies to anyone who was offended by my foul language.

I can understand your sentiment. But you have see how it looks form over here. Ditching carriers, tanks, what else? It is hard for me to imagine that ‘the US saving our bacon’ does not enter into SOMEONE’S strategic thinking over there. What else make sense? If you discount that then it looks more like national suicide.
