A Senate committee will take up at least four gun-control proposals on Thursday.
But in Louisiana and other states where traditions of gun ownership and hunting run deep, the Democratic president's efforts have not just failed to register: they have galvanized opposition to any attempts to restrict firearms -
"This has been a rallying cry for people to draw a line in the sand and say, 'We are not going to allow this to happen to our guns,'" said state Representative Jeff Thompson, a Republican who has launched a campaign called "Defend Louisiana" to fight federal and state gun-control proposals.
The revolt against gun restrictions in states like Louisiana poses a dilemma for some Democrats from conservative, pro-gun states who in recent years have largely managed to avoid dwelling on the issue.
Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana is among a half-dozen Democratic senators from such states who are up for re-election next year and are likely to be crucial in determining what gun-control proposals emerge from the Democratic-led Senate.
In Louisiana, Republicans and gun-rights groups are vowing to make Landrieu pay next year if she supports any of the measures. When asked about the pending gun legislation, Landrieu treads carefully.
While people are concerned about the safety of children and what happened in Connecticut, "the other side is very concerned about the government using this incident or other incidents to overreach and restrict their constitutional right to firearms and self-protection," Landrieu said. "So, it is going to be a challenge."
National polls show overwhelming public support for broader background checks on gun sales, and majority support for more controversial measures such as a ban on assault weapons.
But the political reality is quite different in Louisiana, which bills itself as a "sportsman's paradise."

Folks better tread real light in LA. Some of them coon-asses won’t take to kindly to messing with their livelihoods. And there’s LOTS of swamp there. Where some really awesome food comes from too I might add. Someone might be needing some gator bait or crawfish bait.
The 'other side', eh? Another traitor and domestic enemy reveals herself. The conversation ends here.
Gun owners were blindsided back in 1968. Today they will not go softly into that good night.
Senator Mary Landrieu needed every vote from the Metairie cemetery to get elected last time. This seat could easily be a GOP plus.
“National polls show overwhelming public support for broader background checks on gun sales.....”
Where did they conduct this “poll?”
How was it worded?
How many of the respondents even own a firearm?
Since when is a constitutional right subject to public opinion polls?
At one time in our history, a majority of Americans thought slavery was A-OK, too.
Screw all that “guns” bit.
We won’t let this happen..TO US! AS PEOPLE! AS CITIZENS!
Miss Piggy's fat is already in the fire over Obamacare; anti-gun comments may well be her career's coup de grâce. That sort of stuff plays very poorly in Louisiana, especially in a state-wide election.
In the November 2012 election, Louisianans had a State of Louisiana Amendment, to approve or disapprove, about strengthening Section 2, which is the right to keep and bear arms. 75% of the State population voted to approve this amendment.
We do NOT have any “gun registrations” here, except for the FBI Form 4473, which you fill out when you purchase a firearm.
When you apply for a State Concealed Carry License, you get photographed, fingerprinted, and another background check performed by the State Police.
We view any attmept and any further legislation, as a direct threat towards our 2nd Amendment Right.
There is a dinosaur female state legislator from the Shreveport area, that has a bill stating that all firearms kept within a home shall be locked at all times, or $300 for the first infraction, as found by the local police. The bil allows for no time for a firearm to be unlocked in the home.
Can you see any danger with this?

This is a good accurate illustrated website describing and explaining the Colt Model 1860 .44 Army percussion ignition revolver
I had a well used (and put away wet) “over-buffed/polished” antique (with Civll War Serial Numbers) Colt 1860 Army revolver that was a Reb capture (I bought “well” from a well-known reputable antique firearms dealer in Atlanta GA) and I then tinkered with it, replaced a badly worn original (circa 1862) cylinder pin, tuned the action, and tightened up the frame-barrel to the orginal Colt design specifications.
I later also bought an accurately made modern aftermarket walnut stock and brass fitted clone/replica of the Colt 1860 detachable shoulder stock.
It was a classy and authentic display piece - but it had to go with some of my other nice revolvers and Derringers some years ago.
However times change - my private “Gun Lobby” here is neither sparse or dusty.
The orginal Colt Army .44 and Navy .36 Shoulder Stocks are rare and mucho expensive and all appear to made of Unobtainium - most that you might see in a museum or at a gun dealers are modern made replicas that have been “aged” by experts - Let the prospective buyer beware. If any Colt percussion revolver Shoulder Stock looks to be an authentic original - Someone is blowing apple cider in your ear while they pick your pocket.

The original 1860 Colt Army had about the same deadly knockdown power of a modern Colt 1911A .45acp semi automatic pistol.
One shot and you were instantly flat on your butt and not about to get up and/or return fire.
900fps and a large heavy bullet.
FYI - Obama and his well-guarded wealthy Marxist buddies intend to make these fine historic antique firearms illegal for you to purchase, use, or own.

I have a nice Uberti patina finish 1860 Army that I bought & `antiqued’ a shoulder stock for. Didn’t know it had the knockdown you describe, just that .44 caliber Colt revolvers got smaller as steels improved (Walker, Dragoon, 1860). Will now have to load it up & fire a few shots.
Ever hear the saying that a shoulder stock turns a good pistol into a bad carbine?
Anyway man, dis is a Cajun thread & ol’ Boudreaux & Thibodeaux dey don’ like it one bit dem Federals wan’ come ‘n take our guns away, we seen dat go down already after Katrina. Now, what you be callin’ dey Feds in da skiff out lookin’ for our coonasses out in da swamp?
`Ice cold six pack’ when we get done with’em, man.
