A U.S. Senator for Connecticut is asked NASCAR to "reverse its decision to name" one of its races after the National Rifle Association.
Earlier this week, the NRA signed a one-year agreement to be the title sponsor for the April 13 race at the Texas Motor Speedway.
"The NRA has been involved in the sport for several years and a partner of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. for many years in various aspects, and this race entitlement is just another extension of that business relationship," said Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage. "We look forward to another successful partnership with the NRA for our April race week of activities."
The decision to sign the contract is the Texas Motor Speedway's and not NASCAR's.
"As you may or may not know, race sponsor entitlement partnerships are agreements directly between the track and the sponsor," NASCAR told Eyewitness News Thursday.
The race, which will be called the NRA 500, is part of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The NRA 500 is first prime-time Saturday evening race of the 2013 season, according to Texas Motor Speedway officials.
"The NRA 500 is the latest announcement in the long history of a growing partnership between the NRA, Speedway Motorsports and the NASCAR community," said NRA Executive Vice President and CEO Wayne LaPierre. "NRA members and NASCAR fans love their country and everything that is good and right about America."
U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, who has been outspoken on gun control and against the NRA, urged NASCAR to change its decision.
"They should stay out of political debate about gun violence," the senator tweeted Thursday.
During an interview with Eyewitness News, Murphy called the decision to rename the race "irresponsible during the most important debate over gun control in a generation."

There's that pesky first amendment thingie again.
Anybody who disagrees with the crook should stay out of the debate.
f***king typical lib. I think i can speak for both TX and NASCAR when I tell Murphy to go **** ******* *** *** ***** ** **** ** **!
Chris Murphy should stay out of the political debate and listen to his constituents.
Hey Yankee! Don’t mess with Texas!
Refresh my memory but didn’t NASCAR finally bend to a lot of political pressure to drop the name Winston Cup? This certainly isn’t the first time that liberals have had NASCAR in their sights (deliberate gun analogy).
the rat’s a moron...Bells will ring
And you’ll sing “Vita bella”
Hearts will play
Like a gay tarantella
Maybe this Rat should have his own race.
Call it the Commie Blast 100.
Only allow Government Motors Chevy Volts to run.
It would be great, Instead of taking wages on who would win, wagering would be on who explodes first.
My memory of this tells me NASCAR dropped the Winston Cup name because the Feds banned most cigarette advertising.
Let’s find out where he lives...both in CT *and* DC...and publish those addresses with the announcement that he doesn’t own any firearms, being philosophically opposed to guns.Let’s see how long it takes for one Or both) of his places being broken into.
If the alternate selection is the “Connecticut Sucks 500” then I’m all for the name change.
All he has to do is find out what the NRA is paying NASCAR, and offer more.
But that’ll never happen because Democrats only know how the spend other people’s money, not their own.
sent him a note...
Happy to see you find the 1st amendment as interrupted by the US Supreme court in(National Association for the Advancement of Colored People v. Alabama
“Immunity from state scrutiny of petitioner’s membership lists is here so related to the right of petitioner’s members to pursue their lawful private interests privately and to associate freely with others in doing so as to come within the protection of the Fourteenth Amendment” and, further, that freedom to associate with organizations dedicated to the “advancement of beliefs and ideas” is an inseparable part of the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment”
as out of date and useless as the 2nd Amendment. Good job. Keep up the good work!
The should rename it, “The U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy is an A-hole 500”
How about the “Eric Holder traffics guns to Mexican cartels 500.” Practically rolls off the tongue. Well it is better than the “Pork, the Other White Meat 500.”
If the alternate selection is the “Connecticut Sucks 500” then I’m all for the name change.
Maybe they’d be happier with the Fast and Furious Gun Runner 500. Eric Holder can start the race.
“It’s the economy, stupid.” —JAMES CARVILLE, 1992
F’Off Chris Murphy. ...go change your panties!
Or "The Dyslexic 500 - sponsored by ARN"
Better yet “The U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy is an A-hole 500 Presented by the NRA”
Democrats - Daily showing that they can suck more.
Works for me!
Another idiot in government that wants to mess with business!
Dude go yack to someone who cares!
NASCAR fans don’t care what it’s called, idiot they just wanna see the stinkin race!
He looks like a spit-shine Yankee knob polisher.
Eat it, Murphy. So glad we moved out of your progressive Connecticut political scene to Texas last year!!!!
Your state is losing hundreds of income tax dollars and that’s becoming a trend, wake up to the fleeing constituency & smell the lost cordite.
Hating the NRA is one requisite for membership in the Democrat party these days and Chris Murphy is a member in good standing. Of course the NRA and NASCAR will ignore the junior senators request but it'll get him the media coverage he craves because his media pals share his abhorrence of law abiding Americans owning, gasp, guns!
There’s not a single NASCAR race in Connecticut, either at the Sprint Cup level or the Nationwide level. And although most of the fans that attend the races in New Hampshire, Delaware, Illinois, California, Michigan and New York would likely support NRA sponsorship of those races, NASCAR was smart enough to avoid that situation. This would be like a Republican congressman protesting against the Hollywood based Academy Awards because it was sponsored by the United Auto Workers Union.
How about adding 35 miles to the course and calling it the Idiot 535?
Consider these connections between the Evil twins Chris Dodd and Chris Murphy.
In 2007-2008 Chris Dodd was Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee; at the same time Chris Murphy was a member of the House Banking Committee.
In 2003 Dodd got a below market Countrywide Financial Corp mortgage on his Washington, DC and Connecticut homes.
In 2007 Murphy also got his below market rate mortgage. His was from Webster Bank and it was on his Connecticut home.
In 2008 Dodd claimed his loan rate from Countrywide was at a competitive rate which it was not.
He denied any political pressure on Countrywide which was ridiculous.
In 2012 Murphy, who got the below market rate from Webster despite his poor credit, also denied his mortgage was the result of political pressure.
In June 2008 Dodd proposed a program to assist sub-prime mortgage lenders like HIS pals at Countrywide and later voted for the big bank bailout of 2008.
When it was considered in the House, Chris Murphy voted for the bailout that delivered 400 million dollars of tax payer money to HIS pals at Webster Bank.
Chris Dodd was a Connecticut congressman from 1975-1980 and senator from 1981 to 2010 when he decided not to run again in recognition that he could not win reelection. People preferred an acknowledged liar who claimed to have served in Viet Nam with the Marines over Chris Dodd.
Chris Murphy served as an intern to Chris Dodd in the Senate: HC 5/1/09.
In 2007 when Dodd ran for President Murphy was one of the first to endorse him: why not?
I wish we could give Murphy and that other A-Hole we have in the Senate,The Fake Marine to Texas so Texans can straiten them out. These Two are serious mental cases and they should have never been elected.
Unfortunately the majority of voters in connecticut are mental cases.
Oh!by the way I left the name of the state in small type because it is small.Small in size, mental capacity, you name it.The only thing thats not small is their capacity to try and control people and steal our money.
I am not a big race fan, but this race is huge - literally the largest race of the year. I would love to go to that party.
>> “My memory of this tells me NASCAR dropped the Winston Cup name because the Feds banned most cigarette advertising” <<
They repealed the first amendment?
How about the “F*** Marxism 500” Mr. Murphy??
If they signed the contract, “reconsidering” is actually spelled “breach”.
Well, I read right here on FR that any State Legislature or Town/City Council can suspend any or all of the Amendments in the Bill of Rights by enacting a State Law, or City/Town ordinance. Their position was based on States Rights.
So who knows if we still have First Amendment Rights...
I know people in some States are losing their 2nd Amendment Rights at an alarming rate.
I imagine he's pretty selective about who he thinks should "stay out" of the debate, namely the other side. I bet if they named it the "Wussy Pussy Anti-Rights 500" he'd be just junky dory with them having an opinion on a public issue.
“U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, who has been outspoken on gun control and against the NRA, urged NASCAR to change its decision.”
*Sigh* and 55.2% of voters in CT supported this guy in 2012.
he could fire a starting gun!
Only for people with opinions not on the approved list. If they like what you think, it's censorship if someone just skips buying your product.
No way a lib can complain about that! They like Sen. Chris Murphy and they like a-holes, so what's not to like?
“.....when I tell Murphy to go **** ******* *** *** ***** ** **** ** **!”
I attempted to decode the encrypted part of your statement. I came up with: “to go COMMIT FORNICATION UPON HIMSELF!”
Am I anywheres close?
As if anyone at the Texas race or in NASCAR cares what some CT left scum has to say. About ANYTHING!
Has anyone told this idiot that NASCAR is a LOT more powerful than he is? LOL What a fool!
