If all had gone according to plan, US Secretary of State John Kerry would be preparing to bestow an "International Women of Courage" award upon an Egyptian named Samira Ibrahim later this afternoon. He will not, as it turns out, and for very good reason. The Weekly Standard has done Yeoman's work on this controversy, which unraveled in a hurry:
Five of these awards are being given to women from Muslim-majority countries, underscoring the unique plight of women in those countries. The only problem is that one of the women to be recognized is an anti-Semite and supports the 9/11 attacks on the United States. Samira Ibrahim, as the State Department’s profile describes her, “was among seven women subjected by the Egyptian military to forced virginity tests in March 2011.” The press release further notes that Samira “was arrested while in high school for writing a paper that criticized Arab leaders’ insincere support to the Palestinian cause.” Apparently, the State Department is unaware of her other convictions. On Twitter, Ibrahim is quite blunt regarding her views. On July 18 of last year, after five Israeli tourists and a Bulgarian bus driver were killed a suicide bombing attack, Ibrahim jubilantly tweeted: “An explosion on a bus carrying Israelis in Burgas airport in Bulgaria on the Black Sea. Today is a very sweet day with a lot of very sweet news.” Ibrahim frequently uses Twitter to air her anti-Semitic views. Last August 4, commenting on demonstrations in Saudi Arabia, she described the ruling Al Saud family as “dirtier than the Jews.” Seventeen days later she tweeted in reference to Adolf Hitler: “I have discovered with the passage of days, that no act contrary to morality, no crime against society, takes place, except with the Jews having a hand in it. Hitler.” Ibrahim holds other repellent views as well. As a mob was attacking the United States embassy in Cairo on the eleventh anniversary of 9/11, pulling down the American flag and raising the flag of Al Qaeda, Ibrahim wrote on twitter: “Today is the anniversary of 9/11. May every year come with America burning.” Possibly fearing the consequences of her tweet, she deleted it a couple of hours later, but not before a screen shot was saved by an Egyptian activist.
A charming lady, wouldn't you say? Confronted with these despicable tweets at the eleventh hour, Ibrahim borrowed a page from the Anthony Weiner playbook and claimed that her account had been hacked. Occasionally. Over a span of months. Which she'd never mentioned before. Astonishingly, our credulous State Department -- which had failed to discover her offensive views on their own -- actually bought her excuse:
Veteran State Department reporter Nicole Gaouette just tweeted, "State officials tell me they've looked at 1000s of her tweets & believe her account was hacked." Waiting for more information from State.
After some more investigation, however, enough red flags had been raised that State announced it would defer her award. Having grinningly lied to deceive and placate her would-be American hosts, Ibrahim sensed that the jig was up and evidently felt liberated to come clean. No apologies, you Zionist monsters:
Ibrahim claimed yesterday that her Twitter page had been “stolen” and she was not responsible for the hateful comments. Today the State Department announced it was deferring her award pending further review. Finally, Ibrahim herself has spoken, writing in Arabic on her Twitter page. Egyptian democracy activist Mina Rezkalla provides the translation: "I refuse to apologize to the Zionist lobby in America regarding my previous anti-Zionist statements under pressure from American government therefore they withdrew the award.” This would seem to settle the question as to whether or not her page had been “stolen.” Now all that’s left is for the State Department to demand that Ibrahim reimburse American taxpayers for her trip to the United States.
That's right, taxpayers, you funded this woman's trip to our country -- attacks against which she celebrates. In their (understandable) haste to acknowledge and encourage moderate, peace-loving Muslims, both the Bush and Obama administrations have experienced major vetting meltdowns, leading to Islamists being feted by Official Washington. Perhaps the most egregious example was Anwar al-Awlaki's invitation to dine at the Pentagon in the months immediately following 9/11. A decade hence, he was targeted and killed in an American drone strike in Yemen.
ABC has nothing about it. Neither does CBS, CNN, and MSNBC which is no surprise
I read the Washington Post’s story on her and they couldn’t bring themselves to criticize her. While it’s not disappointing or surprising it is disgusting.
I heard it is only “postponed” though...so it still may go through.
The State Department has canceled the award it planned to give an Egyptian activist whose Twitter account included virulently anti-American and anti-Semitic statements.
The decision Friday comes a day after the administration postponed the award, while it looked into the recently discovered tweets from activist Samira Ibrahim.
You’re not surprised that the Compost doesn’t criticize her, are you?
Isn't that the John Kerry who served in Vietnam, called our soldiers murderers and threw his deceptively earned medals over the fence in protest. Say it isn't so. Hah! Treason thy name is "Progressive".
She is a piece of work!
You said it
The one and the same
Not at all surprised by it, as I said, and not disappointed because I expected nothing better. It’s still disgusting though.
It sure is
