Bystander Fired Deadly Shot, Not Officer
WAFB NEWS 9 ^ | Mar. 8, 2013 | Jim Shannon

There were two big developments Monday in the case of a motorist who was shot and killed along Greenwell Springs Road Friday after a fight with a police officer. Investigators say an autopsy shows the deadly bullet was fired by a bystander, not the officer. Police also announced that no charges would be filed in the case, either against the police officer involved or the bystander who fired the fatal shot into the head of George Temple.

East Baton Rouge Sheriff's spokesman Greg Phares says Officer Brian Harrision was escorting a funeral procession Friday when he pulled Temple over and wrote him a ticket for breaking into the procession. According to Phares, that's when Temple attacked Harrison. Police say Perry Stevens was walking outside of the Auto Zone on Greenwell Springs Road when he heard Harrison yelling for help. Harrison was reportedly on his back with Temple on top of him. That's when Stevens went to his car and grabbed his .45 caliber pistol.

According to Col. Greg Phares, "[Mr. Stevens] orders Mr. Temple to stop and get off the officer. The verbal commands are ignored and Mr. Stevens fires four shots, all of which struck Mr. Temple."

Perry Stevens fired four shots into Temple's torso. Officer Harrison had already fired one shot into Temple's abdomen. With Temple still struggling with the officer, Perry continued to advance toward the scuffle.

"He again orders Mr. Temple to stop what he was doing and get off the officer. Those commands are ignored and he fires a fifth shot and that hits his head. The incident is over with, and as you know, Mr. Temple is dead

9 News is told George Temple has a criminal record, and Officer Harrison was involved in a shooting while employed as a prison guard in East Baton Rouge Parish, where he was suspended for three days back in 1995.

It sounds like Temple knows a little PCP.

Good to see a citizen help to thin the herd a little.

Well, a .45 to the brain stem will certainly stop most altercations.

The shot hit Temple in the temple. Would have been better for him if his name had been George Balls.

Only problem I see is officer Harrison needed to carry a larger caliber sidearm. .45 ACP - Bigger holes are better holes (usually).

Apparently, 4 ea .45ACP plus 1 ea ???(9mm? .40S&W?) to the torso were NOT enough to stop this particular altercation. It took the headshot to stop it. Something to keep in mind ...

Remember: pistols are pistols, rifles are rifles, shotguns are shotguns. Even a "powerful" pistol is really kinda marginal.

Perry Stevens must be a terrific shot and very cool headed. Four shots all hit the target while the target is struggling with the officer!?! Perhaps there was a little separation of the two that is not apparent in the text here.

i am seriosly glad the officer did not shoot the bystander with the firearm, who just saved his bacon. nowadays you just cannot trust what reaction you’re going to get from an officer, under any situation.

One would think that the four previous shots to the torso would have been quite sufficient.

Just wow, one 9 mil (or maybe a .40) in the gut, and 4 hits in the torso from a .45 and he still didn’t get the message?

Crack, or meth, or pcp, or bath salts sure do make you a living, breathing zombie.

HEAD SHOT!

Only thing that works in this situation. Just glad that Mr. Stevens had the gonads to deliver the coup de gras. This whole thing could have turned really ugly for the good guys had he not.

That’s got to be a heavy load though.

You never know. I recall a news story in the '60s about a guy found wandering along the railroad tracks near where I lived with six slugs from a .357 in his head. He didn't know who he was or what had happened but he was up and walking the tracks. Said he "had a headache."

OTOH you can take a little fall hit your head on the edge of the counter and it's lights out for good.

The Officer is lucky.........when seconds count, an armed law abiding citizen is only seconds away.

Well, when his life is passing before his eyes, I would think he would take any life line offered, even if it was from a known adversary.

Funny how edge of life situations make you see sense.

Not to defend police officers for any reason, but it's generally standard department policy to suspend with pay any officer involved in a fatal shooting no matter what the circumstances. Not saying his 1995 shooting was justified, just that even if it was totally justified, his suspension would probably still show up on his record.

Meanwhile in Torrance the police can shoot a hundred rounds at two little old ladies in a pickup truck and only manage to get half of them on the truck and only two into one of the ladies.

In their defense, she was a small lady...

While looking for a picture of George Temple, I found this. The shooting took place seven years ago on 2/17/06! But you'd never know it looking at the article. In fact, you might think it had happened yesterday. Effing media. Gotta keep 'em riled up and the pressure on.

A little bullet in the face or throat also does wonders. Always take the head shot if you can.

This is soo true. There are countless stories of folks walking around with all kinds of stuff poking out of their heads and not even knowing it.

OTH, on the farm, I used the dreaded .22 SHORT to put down really big hogs and pigs. (actually, truth in tale, the short only stunned them, the sticking blade is what “killed” them.)

Its all a matter of placement.
