Obama pushes ahead with export control changes (Another E.O.)

The Obama administration has notified Congress of plans to modify U.S. weapon and ammunition export controls to make it easier for American companies to export spare parts for aircraft and gas turbine engines, the White House said on Friday.

President Barack Obama also issued an executive order changing how export controls on military and certain high-technology goods are administered, the latest step in a reform initiative that dates back to August 2009.

"This is the beginning of putting in place the nation's new export control system," a senior administration official told reporters on condition he not be identified. "Our current export control system is very complicated ... It's designed to address the Cold War-era and hasn't been updated since that time."

The changes are aimed at simplifying export licensing requirements for less sensitive items and building better protections for the most critical technologies, administration officials said.

Currently, everything on the U.S. Munitions List "is controlled equally, whether an F-18 fighter or a bolt that has been modified for use on that F-18, and each of these items requires an individual license," the White House said.

The new rules go into effect in 180 days of being published, unless Congress, which was notified of the changes on Thursday, moves to block them in the next 30 days.

"The new system will help our defense companies compete more effectively abroad while creating more jobs here at home," said Representative Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee.

A study by the Milken Institute for the National Association of Manufacturers a few years ago estimated that modernizing export controls could boost real U.S. economic output by $64 billion and create 160,000 manufacturing jobs.

Well, clearly, Congress is proving to be just another government waste of taxpayer dollars.

If they are going to let zero rule by E.O., send them home to get real jobs and let the revolt begin!! This is NOT what the Founders intended.

Sounds to me like this will make it easier for companies to sell arms and technology to our enemies.

I have to take anything going out of the country to an ITAR admin to ensure it doesn't violate export laws. There was a T shirt with a crypto algorithm written in PERL that included the warning that it is a "controlled munition". Methinks Obama is preparing to repeat a Bill Clinton by exporting critical technology to our enemies for some more campaign cash. Notice he is still campaigning.

I still have that T-Shirt. I pull it out every few years when it's time to renew my drivers license.

Our enemies don't need to buy our arms and technology. What Clinton didn't give to them, Obama will!!

Well, it will make it easier for big defense contractors to sell to our enemies. And their top secret products will be given away as Clinton did.

I think they’ll also figure a way for this EO to protect obama and hillary on Benghazi. Even mccain should have just gone ahead and said “What difference does it make?”

I attended UseNIX as often as possible from 1988 to 1992. There were quite a few people that chose that shirt. Some Finnish kid decided to make his own flavor of Tanenbaum's MINIX OS and kept bugging people for pointers. That turned out Ok :-)

But, that's the point. They don't HAVE to buy it when zero is so willing to GIVE it to them!

I think they’ll also figure a way for this EO to protect obama and hillary on Benghazi.

They don't need to. All zero has to do is claim "executive privilege" and the discussion ends.
