Royal Navy girl told to cover up uniform on Virgin flight in case it offended other passengers
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 20:23 EST, 8 March 2013 | Ian Drury

For 15 years she has proudly served her country as a Royal Navy engineer, risking her life in Afghanistan when she fought against the Taliban.

But far from showing Nicky Howse the respect she deserved as she flew back to her latest posting, Virgin Atlantic staff chose to humiliate her—by demanding that she remove her uniform because it was “offensive”.

They warned the 32-year-old helicopter technician she would not be allowed to fly unless she took off her combat fatigues and wore a sleep suit instead. …

They told her—wrongly—that it was the company’s policy not to allow military personnel to travel in uniform. …

Bugger off!

Love it... Hell... when I was in the service we had to wear our Class A's if we wanted the military discount.

My best encounter of this was when I boarded a flight from Stapleton, Denver, to a flight to Chicago. The Stewardess said there was no more room in coach, and with a wink she said, "Would you mind traveling First Class?" Of course I had to comply. What else could I do?

Are they coming off Air Force 1? Absolutely no class.

They are representing this country and they look as if it's just another day at the beach.

F’n Virgin Atlantic diserves to lose their routes to the US. Boycott them. Perhaps they should have all their 747’s replaced with Sir Richard Branson’s balloons. And btw, what does he have to say about this in-your-face treatment of a member of the Royal Navy?

It seems to me that this is the sort of thing that Richard Branson should be handling personally.

First off, he needs to publicly humiliate that security firm, which Virgin probably has no control over, but he needs to make a huge stink about them in the British media.

Secondly, he needs to investigate exactly who tried to force the Petty Officer into the PJs, and personally reprimand everyone up the organizational chart from the supervisor of the scumbag, then personally fire the scumbag AND supervisor.

Something like this should NOT have been acceptable on a British Flagged airline, especially if a leg of it was in US territory!

Mark

yes they were coming off Air Force one..Just one of her many dreadful outfits.. This is what the girl was wearing before the morons made her change..I for one would sue those bums on that airline..(I am not the type that would sue anyone but would in that case)poor girl must have really been embarrassed..she should also demand that G4S security guard was fired along with the others that embarrassed her..

George Orwell also had something to say about our service heroes;

"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."

Same thing here about not wearing the uniform off base.

1971,Ft Lewis, the officers said it was dangerous to

go in Tacoma with VN service awards on you alls dress

uniforms. Hell, the bus transporting us had steel mesh

on the windows to stop stuff thrown.

yeah when I was in the military, you were not to wear combat fatigues amongst the civilian population because you might unnerve them, seriously

He has publicly apologised, and stated that the main fault lies with G4S, who told Virgin staff to get her to change.

G4S are about as popular in the UK (esp after the Olympics) as murdering peadophiles.

Prior to retirement 3 years ago, I was an international business traveler with zillions of frequent flier miles. Read that - automatic upgrades to 1st class.

I always “traded” my upgrade for a service man/woman in uniform. It was especially fun in Raleigh NC where Marines just out of boot transiting and heading home (my God they looked young !!!).

The second best part about doing this was that the gate agents (US Air and United were my main carriers) usually found another upgrade and I still got to ride up front.

I can only speak for those two airlines, but they could not have been nicer to our guys.

Since we are at war that is the day to day uniform. I see military flying in fatigues all the time. It makes perfect sense.

It’s the stupid UK laws that I write about, not the people themselves. They’re to be pitied to have to live under them.
