GIVING IT ALL YOU'VE GOT

Ever hear the expression "Giving it the whole nine yards"? Do you happen to know where it comes from? I used to think it was a sports term. "Not so", say several experts. But there seem to be at least two schools of thought on the phrase's origin. Both seem plausible. I'll let you decide.

One explanation says that it's an expression from the construction trade. A full truck load, according to this rationale, will dump nine cubic yards of sand or gravel at your work site. In such a case, I suppose the expression would imply doing a job completely or thoroughly.

A second explanation claims that the term came from World War II fighter pilots in the South Pacific. When arming their planes on the ground, the .50 caliber machine gun ammunition belts measured exactly 27 feet. Thus, if a pilot fired all his ammo at a target, it got "the whole nine yards." In that context, the expression would mean using every resource at our disposal.

Either way, giving something "the whole nine yards" effectively means "giving it all you've got" or "stretching to reach a goal." But what's the motivation? Why expend that much effort or resources? Sure, we can easily understand how that might apply to special projects or circumstances...but to a daily routine, as a way of life? What's the payoff?

Well, according to Philip Reed, former chairman of the board for General Electric, it's satisfaction and a sense of making a difference. In his observation, those people who seem both to give and to get the most out of life have two things in common. First, they do whatever they're doing "all out", whether it's work or play, dull or boring, little or big. They aren't necessarily flashy or compulsive about it. They've just made a habit of being satisfied only with their best effort.

The second thing he says such people have in common is "the rather special satisfaction, the deep-down joy" they get out of being able to help other people. Just to be able to do a little something extra for a friend, client, patient, or even a complete stranger. For these people, it's a most rewarding experience.

Such behavior, in my opinion, is far more than just a habit. It's personal growth and maturity. When I was young, for example, I used to think of holidays, birthdays, and such, as the opportunity to GET things. Now, I get far more pleasure out of giving, especially to my children and those I love. I think that's what the Apostle Paul was talking about in Chapter 13 of his first letter to the Corinthians -- the "love chapter" of the Bible. The King James Version translates the word as "charity." But, no matter how you translate it, Paul gives us a pretty accurate description of maturity.

If "giving it all you've got" or "giving it the whole nine yards" is based simply on greed, anger, a drive for control, or even a lack of self-esteem, it can burn us out and leave us dispirited or empty. How much better it is to go through our day giving thanks and looking for ways to make life better.

The REAL secret of "giving it all you've got," it would appear, is doing it out of a sense of "delight". A matter of attitude...and maturity; something to which all of us might aspire. Something that might enrich our lives in ways we never expected...and something to consider.

CAPT J. David Atwater, CHC, USN

Dear God:
I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman,
Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, or National Guardsman
Feel alone or forgotten.

O Israel, hope in the Lord;
For with the Lord there is loving kindness,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
And He will redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

Extravagant Gifts

March 10, 2013

When I was pastoring a small church, we faced a huge crisis. Unless we could complete the extensive renovations necessary to bring our building up to the proper safety codes, we would lose our place of worship. A desperate time of fundraising ensued to pay for those renovations; but of all the money given, one gift captured our leadership’s attention.

An elderly woman in the church donated several hundred dollars to the project—money we knew she could not spare. We thanked her for her gift but wanted to return it, feeling that her needs were greater than the church’s. However, she refused to take the money back. She had been saving for years in order to buy a stove and was cooking on a hot plate in the meantime. Yet she insisted that she needed a place to worship with her church family more than she needed a stove. We were astounded by her extravagant gift.

When our Lord observed a widow putting two mites (the smallest of coins) into the temple offerings, He praised her for her extravagance (Luke 21:3-4). Why? Not because of how much she gave, but because she gave all she had. It’s the kind of gift that not only honors our God, but also reminds us of the most extravagant of gifts to us—Christ.

What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a wise man, I would do my part;
Yet what can I give Him—give my heart. —Rossetti
Gratitude of heart can often be seen in a generous spirit.

Read: Luke 21:1-4

All these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had. —Luke 21:4

I did go to work today - out the door at 7:00 a.m. - hit the office at 8:00 - left at 4:00. I worked all 7 days this week - 60 + hours. Lots of OT - time and a half.

I've been on the phone with my daughter Meg in Wisconsin for the last hour. She's doing well professionally - doesn't have much time outside of work.

Prayers continue for your Dad, your family, and of course, for you!

Purcell has been one of my favorites for many years. I tackled a few of his anthems when I studied voice, including this one. Some of them are definitely better suited to a Countertenor, but all of great beauty.

Good for you...OT sure can be handy. Glad your daughter is doing well.

I REALLY appreciate the prayers. Today has had so many getting him up and getting him down and finding him trying to get up by himself that my muscles and knees are screaming. I think we are just about to the end of being able to care for him ourselves. I can’t get him up myself without my Mom steadying him from the front, and his right leg is working less and less.

There is no way I can leave my Mom alone with him, so I will only be working when John comes on M-W-F from 3:30p to 6:30p. Thursday night, over night, we were up all night. Last night he slept through the night. One hour at a time.

Amazing Grace
(Click)

By John Newton

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, .
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
.
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
.
The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.
.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, Who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.
.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.
