PRO-GUN VOTERS PUT HEAT ON DEMOCRATIC SENATORS

HELENA, Mont. (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Max Baucus has been here before.

Back during the Clinton era, the Democrat faced a choice: support an assault weapons ban urged by a president from his own party and risk angering constituents who cherish their gun rights, or buck his party. He chose the ban, and nearly lost his Senate seat.

--snip--

Other Democratic senators that Republicans are watching closely include Mark Begich of Alaska, Kay Hagan of North Carolina, Tim Johnson of South Dakota, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Mark Pryor of Arkansas....

And he's worked hard over the years to become the only Senate Democrat with an A-plus rating from the National Rifle Association.

If anybody has any doubts about the NRA, this should cement them permanently.

I’m no fan of Mark Begich of Alaska (seems a nice guy but a Dem), but to be fair, I googled his record and he seems to stand pretty firm on gun rights. An article in the National Journal covering his gun contol record in depth confirmed the same. I doubt that any anti-gun candidate would have a chance in Alaska.

Gun-Shy

How do you outgun the NRA? Very, very carefully.

Mark Pryor knows all about that. The Democratic senator from pro-gun Arkansas was nowhere to be seen on the Senate floor during Wednesday's showdown over a proposal, championed by the National Rifle Association, that would have gutted state gun-control laws across the nation.

Toward the end of the vote, Pryor entered the chamber through the back door, took a few steps inside, flashed a thumbs-down to the clerk, and retreated as fast and furtively as somebody dodging gunfire.

Several minutes later, the Democrats had racked up more than enough votes to block the proposal. "Are there any senators in the chamber wishing to vote or wishing to change their vote?" the presiding officer inquired.

Pryor burst back in, this time through a side door. "Mr. President!" he called out. "Mr. President!" He stopped in the well to consult with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), a gun-control advocate who was keeping the whip sheet. Schumer gave Pryor a nod, and the Arkansan -- reassured that his vote was not needed to defeat the proposal -- changed his vote to an "aye."

If Pryor wasn't exactly a profile in courage...

Other Democrats, such as Pennsylvania's Bob Casey and Colorado's Mark Udall and Michael Bennet, were said to have been willing to vote "no" if necessary.

Twenty minutes after the voting began, Bennet and Udall left the cloakroom together and walked into the chamber. Bennet went to the well to consult with Schumer, who indicated that it was safe for Bennet -- a product of D.C.'s St. Albans School -- to vote with the NRA. Bennet looked to Udall, who gave an approving nod, and cast his "aye" vote.

Hat tip to george76!

If anybody has any doubts about the NRA

http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2013/01/17/1463981/meet-the-nra-backed-senate-democrats-who-oppose-obamas-gun-violence-prevention-plan/?mobile=nc

1. Max Baucus, Montana (NRA Rating: A+). Baucus appeared to oppose any federal action on gun law reform, saying in a statement that “Before passing new laws, we need a thoughtful debate that respects responsible, law-abiding gun owners in Montana instead of a one-size-fits all directives from Washington.”

Does that piss you off?

Baucus has been one lucky closet red for years. Only the grim reaper can save us from his duplicity and leftist ideology. He’s like a deer tick, embedded so deeply that you couldn’t blast him out with dynamite.

If anybody has any doubts about the NRA, this should cement them permanently.

That probably was the last rating Baucus had in 2008. He has since voted to confirm Kagan and Sotomayor, IIRC, and I don't remember any rat defectors. Should I retrieve the roll call votes? That's why Harry Reid was not endorsed by the NRA in 2010 even though Reid helped the NRA get a brand new range in Nevada.

Addendum re Begich. He has an A rating with NRA, but has made a waffly statement concerning gun control that is cause for concern.

Most of these guys will vote for it.

And most of them will get re-elected.

Have a nice day.

Bump & a BANG!

FReepmail me if you want to be on or off my X list where X equals my separate state lists for Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, Montana, North Carolina and South Dakota. I have the other states too, but I'm just pinging those 6 states now.

I'm trying to start a list for each state that includes a FReeper with a state ping list for that state if that state doesn't have one already.

According to this link I have two FReepers with state's ping lists.

That link is almost 6 years old, and things change.

If I see a story about your state, I want to let you know. This is not expected to be a high volume ping list.

Do any of you have a state ping list for your state? Do any of you want to volunteer and take my list for your state with the intent to grow it? Let me know via FReepmail. Then I can work on other states.

I don’t know if there is an Alaska ping list.

If not, i would be willing to put one together.

Wait and see what Reid permits a vote on. He wants to keep a majority. All of them voted for Obamacare.

Have a nice day.

You and I know that Begich will be the quickest Senator voted out if he votes for any gun control. Actually, it will be hard for him to win even if he doesn't. Now what he should do is get up on the band wagon against Obama, that would get him re-elected. I keep calling his office reminding them about photo radar.

What we need and what I believe will occur is just like in 94, the Dems will be booted over gun control in 2014. People are upset over gun related shortages; imagine if there's a ban on anything.

Thanks for the initiative! FReepmail coming. It’s not big, but that’s what I got looking over 2 months.

No, the NRA giving him an A+ rating after voting for the AWB does.

Got a problem with that?

>Got a problem with that?

Baucus and 5 other Democrats voted no on the continuation of the 1994 AWB.

8 so-called GOP conservatives voted yes. I had a problem with them.

I said it from Day 1 and I’ll say it again. The LAST THING the Dems and even the president wanted was the shooting, because it puts in them in a really tight spot where they could lose everything. It’s fun to watch them squirm now.
