Skip to comments.America's Rifle: Rise Of The AR-15
Posted on 03/10/2013 4:32:02 PM PDT by Daffynition
When his son turned 14 a year ago, Jonathan Hardy bought the teen a gift that was both a coming-of-age badge and a hot item: an AR-15 rifle.
To Hardy, the matte-black weapon is not a dangerous assault rifle. His son's model shoots the same small, low-powered bullets used by youths for decades.
The allure of the AR-15 the main gun used by the shooter in Newtown has nothing to do with the rifle's firepower, as far as Hardy is concerned. Rather, it's the gun's modular design, light weight, ease of use, low recoil and extraordinary flexibility that draws him in.
"It's the perfect rifle," said Hardy, a New Britain resident and certified firearms instructor who is active in the debate over gun control. "It can grow with him as he grows. ... As his needs change, it can change."

**How and whether Newtown's aftermath affects long-term sales of the AR-15 remains to be seen. Stag Arms owner Mark Malkowski, Veilleux [CEO, Colt's] and others in the industry will not speculate on the effect of possible legislation on sales.
"I did listen really closely to everything that was being said and I did reflect really deeply on my role in firearms manufacture...in the community," said Veilleux, who has two school-age children. "At the end of that reflection I feel confident that what I'm doing is not contributing to making this place less safe."**
How many times do we have to remind these idiots that an AR-15 was NOT used in Newton!!! The rifle was found in the trunk of his car after he had already shot the children and killed himself inside the school! The shooter never brought the AR-15 into the school or fired it to kill a single child!!!!
Americans have a tendency to like whatever their military rifle is. I guess other countries probably do the same, for instance Canucks like their SMLEs
I remember a Jeff Cooper article many years ago. He said he preferred the Garand over the M-16. Then he admitted that his old Marine Sergeant thought the Garand was a gimmick and the O3 Springfield was the better rifle.
Incorrect. The rifle was used. The shotgun was left in hecar.
Then I guess the investigation into the use of an AR-15 at Newton was just another lie when LE all stated the AR-15 was NEVER fired! I guess if you tell a lie enough, it becomes the truth to some:
CBS, NBC, ABC Admit No Assault Rifle Used at Sandy Hook
There's that, plus the fact that people will like it because the government wants to ban it. Whenever someone gets up and decries what an evil weapon it is, and wants to ban them, a significant portion of the people who hear that think, "Cool, I'll buy two then."
So, is there a 22 rimfire version of the AR-15? Or is this just more media misinformation?
Placemarker ... no wonder this nation is sinking into the fen of democrip controls. Once a lie is spewed forth from the media, too many take it as gospel and ignore later facts which contradict the official lies.
“Incorrect. The rifle was used. The shotgun was left in hecar.”
Ditto, but there was so much incorrect reporting of the story it is a wonder that anyone knows the correct story.
That’s dated January 25. It’s old news and incorrect.
yes there is a 22lr ar15
Well, there is, now.
But more likely, the idiot reporter has confused .22lr with .223 because they're both .22 caliber.
I guess it's too much to ask for a professional journalist writing about guns to learn the difference between "caliber" and "cartridge."
Outstanding Article.I didn’t detect a bit of Bias in it at all.
Though I would like to see Colt’s come along stronger and support our Civil Right guaranteed by the Second Amendment.
My brother in law has a S&W .22 rimfire AR. Very nice shooter.
There are dedicated .22lr ARs now, as well as rimfire upper receivers.
Of course, they have been .22lr conversion bolts almost since the military started using the M16.
Don’t just dismiss this out of hand, where is YOUR proof that it is “incorrect!” ABC, NBC, and CBS have NOT claimed an AR-15 was used at Newton since this investigation was conducted! This fact does not fit the liberal socialist push for gun control and a ban on “assault weapons” so the lie that an AR-15 was used at Newton keeps being repeated as fact when in FACT, it is NOT true.
And all records related to #newtown are sealed.
And those same people will swear hyper-violent and -sexual movies and video games have no effect on anyone at all.
He used a Bushmaster. Killed himself with a pistol.
This is very, very unusual. I’m not too familiar w/ author Haar...I’ll be on the watch for his writings.
Every single day, Sandy Hook is in the paper, FP, in some form or another. It’s being driven home how evil guns are. The *committee* [posted on FR]is holding more hearings this week [w/out the police report]
We [CT] are under siege. Please pray for us.
Several maunfacturers make 22 LR versions. Smith & Wesson, Mossberg, and Sig Sauer to name three. Of course, 22 LR Iis not technically an AR-15.
You can get a cheap conversion kit to shoot .22LR ammo through your .223 barrel of the AR-15. Don’t expect the same accuracy, though.
But you can plink away with your Ar-15 all day long and not go broke.
Beforeitsnews is a bogus site, bordering on parody.
The bad report came from the fact that the media can’t tell the difference between an AR, AK and Shotgun. It started when a shotgun was pulled from the car and they called it an AR.
The police reported the AR was used.
The tape I saw showed the cops unloading and removing a shotgun from the trunk of the car.
We had several freepers who were even able to correctly identify the model of shotgun from that brief video before it was officially reported.
While the media was still calling the shotgun an AR.
There are available calibres .50, .465, .45, .40, 9mm, 6.8mm, 6.5mm, .308, .300 Winmag...Hell’s bells. Crosman makes an M4 .177. Take yer pick.
Add Colt to that list.
I personally own a Daisy AR 177.
The magazine holds at least 60 rounds.
I wonder if it is on Feinstein’s hit list.
Using a lightweight mid-60s Mossberg .22lr wood-stocked carbine with an inexpensive scope you would be surprised what can be done at incredibly long, medium, or close distances by an experienced trained life-long shooter.
Not “black” - Not “scary looking”
Instinct, Ability, Practice, Instant reactions
I would pick it over my handguns or service firearms for getting rid of various annoying pests in the real world.
Unlike “Skeeter” I was not shooting blanks.....
You can get those, I just bought a robinson arms xcr in .308 though:)
There is a rifle by S&W, the M&P 15-22, with all the bells and whistles on it that scare the libs (pistol grip, adjustable stock, barrel shroud, black color, mounting rails for a scope and forward grip, etc.) and fires 22LR ammo.
It is not classified with the similar-looking rifles which fire high velocity military ammo, though.
I have an AR-15, but its not my favorite go to rifle.
My most accurate rifle is Rem 700 .25-06. Shooting a bullet twice the weight of a 5.56 at the same velocity. It also shoots a group you can cover with a dime at 100 yds.
For faster work, I like the FAL.
The AR has its utility, but I own it mainly to piss off leftists.
There is a conversion kit for the AR’s to make it fire .22LR.
Simply remove the bolt carrier and slide in the new bolt carrier, and slide in the new magazine and presto...it now fires .22LR
Is the one I use.
Ya mean I can’t go huntin’ prairie dogs and squirrels and chipmunks with mah 50 calibre M2 any more? .... 8<)
Some of them there chipmunks get pretty mean when they’re cornered.
Well, I guess ya could, pardner. But yull never know if ya hit it
or it just ran clean into the next county.
That would be a NO. The AR-15 is a light weight and low in recoil — those are definite pluses. The AR-15 platform is a modular platform that can become a customized rifle or carbine to suit anyone’s desires, but it is not the only rifle.
Its big brother, the M14 (aka M1A for civilians) is a 7.62 NATO main battle rifle that has been developed into a very nifty precision rifle, carbine, and special purpose firearm. If push comes to shove, I prefer the M14 (M1A) because of its punch and range.
For the manufacturers in CT, I'd tell these oafs in the state legislature and governor's office that you've had enough of their crap and your company is moving to a firearms friendly state. You're taking your best workers with you. Screw CT politicians and the horses they rode in on. Screw CT taxes (our companies and employees are taxpayers and you're not getting our money any more). Are you listening? Goodbye to Colt's Manufacturing Co., Sturm-Ruger, O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Marlin Firearms Co., Widley Guns, and Stag Arms.
MG, I agree they should go full Ronnie Barrett on them! F em!
I own three Ar-15 rifles. 2 of them have 16” barrels chambered for 5.56x45MM Nato, one being a heavy barrel 1:9 inch twist and the other a lightweight barrel 1:7 twist. The last one is an AR-15 upon which I have replaced the upper reciever with one from Chiappa arms chambered for .22 LR ammo, and you cannot tell that it is not a standard AR-15 unless you pull back tha bolt and look at the bolt carrier, which is a strict blowback design rather than that of the turn bolt locking lugs found on the bolt and barrel extension of the far higher chamber pressured standard 5.56x45MM chambered AR-15. It saves hugely on ammo costs and is great for hunting small game.
I also have an upper reciever from Rock River Arms chambered for .458 SOCOM which uses a slightly altered bolt and reciever and uses standard AR-15 magazines, holding 10 rounds in a 30 round .556 magazine. I can use THAT one to take down a grizzly bear or a 500 lb hog. ALL of these lower recievers can be swapped onto ANY of the other upper recievers in 15 seconds or so by simpoly pushing out two pins, attesting to the extraordinary modularity of the AR-15 M-16 rifle. It is the Barbie doll of rifles for men. An infoinite variety of calibers can be swapped such as the ,450 Bushmastewr, .50 Beowulf, and 6.5 Grendal. This list is by NO meaNS COMPLETE.
My rifles have quad sided Weaver rails onto which I have placed red dot holographic sights, 4X magnifiers, red lasers, and tactical 4X illuminated scopes with quick detach levers, and vertical foregrips with integrated white lights from UTG. They are zeroed for spot on targeting at 200 yards and have sub MOA accuracy.
The AR M-16 rifle is one of the finest engineered firearms EVER. Within the limits of its 5.56 cartridge envelope, you WILL hit what you aim at if you employ proper shooting technique.
You, my friend, are exercising your 2nd Amendment rights.
Sen. Feinstein should be impeached for violating the oath of office that she took prior to entering the U.S. Senate as a Senator from California. Part of that oath requires her to uphold, support and defend the Constitution (which includes the 2nd Amendment) of the United States of America.
This is where we as Freepers need to get involved. Contact our U.S Senators and Representatives and demand that something be done when their peers in Congress start to work towards eliminating the provisions of the 2nd Amendment.
Rise? The AR15 is 50 years old! The first ones are now officially “relics”.
Saiga, wasn’t it? I’d like to have a Krebs Saiga but imagine they’re selling at a premium now.
Look for the video of them removing the long gun from the trunk. It is not an AR-15. Looks more like an AK-action shotgun (Saiga?)
Many initial media reports are incorrect, or do you still think it was his brother that carried out the attacks since CNN plastered his face on the news during the scramble?
