End Republican Party Obstructionism: Follow the California Model [Barf Alert]
Verdict ^ | March 8, 2013 | John Dean

Posted on 03/10/2013 6:13:03 PM PDT by feralcat

Republican obstructionism is once again controlling Washington. The GOP refuses to negotiate—other than on their own terms—regarding the “sequester crisis” with its thoughtless spending cuts, which have been imposed on the nation notwithstanding what will likely be a disastrous impact on our economy, if not a danger to our national security.

At least the GOP is consistent. During the first four years of the Obama presidency, Republicans opposed everything, and after the 2010 mid-term election, when they regained control of the House of Representatives, this opposition turned into blanket obstructionism. Still, President Obama was overwhelmingly reelected and campaigned on adopting a balanced revenue-raising and spending-cut approach to our fiscal problems, given our recovering economy after Bush II’s tax cuts and his unfunded and unnecessary wars. Yet the GOP Congressional minority has refused to allow the President to implement the policies on which he was elected, and which are much needed to get Americans working again.

Those of us who live in California have seen the Republicans play this game at the state level, year after year, because California required a two-thirds majority to enact a simple budget, which enabled the GOP to obstruct the Democratic majority in running the state. Republicans’ refusal to pass budgets almost destroyed the California state government, at one point even preventing the state from issuing checks and requiring that temporary IOU vouchers be substituted to pay state employees and contractors.

Now, the Republican Party is over in California. Before Republicans do more similar damage to the nation, others should study the California example. While I am no expert on these matters, I am very aware of the gist of what occurred.

In the midst of typical rants against GOP "radical crackpots," good old John Dean advises us that the best way to end Republican "obstructionism" is to defeat Republican politicans in elections.

Wow, why hadn't anyone ever thought of that before!

I guess I haven’t seen any obstructionism. The GOP readily sells out.

because California required a two-thirds majority to enact a simple budget,

Damn liar! CA requires a two-thirds majority to raise taxes and fees. Of course, the dems now have this and can do most anything they want.

Silly article, the Democrats have the government union employees using their fees as money laundering financing for the Democrat party.
This state has been a one party Democrat state for decades and is looking more and more like Detroit for it.

The author should look at the trends happening in all areas where there are these Democrat controlled areas and see if Socialism or Capital follows and how economically sound they are. Following that this author should suggest all wanting to follow the California model should dive off the nearest cliff to do the same to themselves sooner without getting good people hurt.

Don't know if "principle" is the correct word.

Didn't Dean exploit has tour of duty with a book deal?

.

Maybe a man of "principal" would be more on target.

Wadda ya thin=k?

I think you overlooked my /S sarcasm tag. John Dean, butt boy, Watergate prison felon, and later turncoat of the Nixon Administration, now apparently a reformed liberal, is not a man of principle.

John Dean apparently doesn’t understand the simple concept of representative government. Republicans took control of the House in 2010 largely due to popular (i.e. majority) reaction against President Obama’s agenda. Yet, the Republicans are obstructionists for simply reflecting the views of the people who put them into office in 2010?

I’m sure Mr. Dean saw things entirely differently during the Bush administration. I bet he was positively thrilled every time the Democrat-controlled House fought the Bush agenda.

California Model?

Yes, it's simple.

The unions run the legislature and the Dems run the unions.

Drug gangs are moving in while taxpaying gun owners are moving out.

Oh, and John Dean? That's just another word for lying weasel

How about the Democrats giving up and following the Wyoming model where people seem not to be able to even spell Democrat?
